So I just got my awe quad tip exhaust installed. It looks great but the sound is another story. I can deal with the flat bass-like sound but the loudness of it in-cabin is just too much. I feel like I am driving a subaru with a straight pipe. I hoped it would sound similar to a B7 with a Milltek that I heard but this is just plain annoying in comparison. I find myself getting on the gas pedal LESS just to avoid the loudness and that is not why i bought it. Should I have the OEM resonators welded back on in place of the straight through ones in the AWE? I looked up silencers but they don't look right and this already has the drone fix in the tips. Am I without hope and should I just sell the system? I have the OEM cat and downpipe so theyre not the problem[headbang]. Any help is appreciated.

you think its too loud with the stock cat?! Well you may want to check with AWE to see if your system has the drone fix, that will help a decent amount in the 2-3k rpm range where the noise is probably the worst.

edit: didnt see you had the drone fix

Hmm I want this exhaust but I don't want it to be too loud or drone like my B5 did. Is this what people are typically experiencing with this exhaust?

yea, it is pretty loud as far as A4 standards and the drone can be annoying, but only between 2.5 and 3k rpm. That said I don't have the drone fix and I have a test pipe so mine may be a little worse than what you would get. I was thinking about dynomatting my whole trunk to see if it would help, plus I'm getting a new sub so if it didnt mute the exhaust it would help with that.

Looks like exhaust isnt your thing...Sometimes I wish my AWE turboback was louder haha

No wonder you like Milltek, it sounds exactly like the stock exhaust haha

Before you modify or sell the system, give the exhaust a few hundred miles.

The note mellows a bit once there is some carbon buildup within the system.

I'm confident it will give you the tone you are looking for.

edit: this is true. My boy has the awe exhaust and he said after driving around a while, he stated it got a bit quiter...

or just add a resonator/glasspack. It'll quiet that sucker down.

Maybe its not the exhaust getting quieter... [o_o]

Alec, I am near KMD. Will trade quad tip and s4 valence for the Stasis exhaust if you have it.

Alex, I can work with the TONE. It is deeper than stock and at some RPMs it sounds good but right around 2500-3100 the in-cabin volume is too loud. I will try to hold off as long as possible but it looks like Im going to a muffler shop to get some real resonators put in.

Keep us informed about getting the resonators put in, I have a feeling I'll be going this route after getting an earful from the wife today...today is install day on our avant, lol...
[rolleyes]

Not sure if the 2.5k-3000 drone is fixable with resonators or not, so please keep informed.

Meineke wants to put a resonator in at the end of my stock downpipe while i suggested replacing the awe resonators with different ones that actually work. If you blindfolded me and drove me around in this car, id swear it was a straightpipe. I cant figure out how a dual muffler, dual resonated system can be like this unless it really is a straight-through system with very little reflection/resonation. What do you guys think I should do? Anyone with a Milltek or Stasis for an auto? Will trade and throw in the S4 valence!

Alex AWE, would you say that your single tip exhaust is the same loudness as the quad tip for the b7 or is it quieter? Are the mufflers the same construction? I am looking to trade my quad for the double but i wanted to know that first thanks.

The sound produced by our single tip and quad tip exhaust systems will be the same.

While you may be tempted too, don't rush off to a muffler shop just yet. The system just needs some time for carbon to build up on the inside. Once that happens things will improve.

If you are truly unhappy with the sound after a few weeks you can either trade your system with another forum member or return it under our 30 day satisfaction guarantee.

Thanks for the info. I may have to trade it out to someone. I had the option for a crappy restrictive aluminum resonator that was too small or a stainless steel sport resonator that wasnt very restrictive. I chose the sport one but i didnt know that they would remove the awe coupler and weld it in place of it. The sport one doesnt do a thing for sound :( It uses reflection like the drone fix in the exhaust tips. The crappy one had bumps in it and probably would have done a lot more but it wouldve shrunk my downpipe to ~1.5 inch which sux. I may have to go back to OEM with a Labree DP...

So has the exhaust sound improved to your liking?

No. It sounds fine IF i put the car in D instead of S around town and keep revs low, but when im commuting to work on the highway, all I get is drone the whole ride. I will be gladly getting rid of this exhaust shortly.

....and my experience of having just had this same exhaust installed on our tiptronic *avant* is not nearly so bad. Given all the talk about this here, it's *quieter* than I expected. I mean, it's not quiet, it has a nice bass tone, and if one is really concerned about how loud their exhaust will be, then I think they should get a Milltek or keep the stocker, but I find the AWE to be far from obnoxious on our car, and one would assume our avant would be louder than a sedan. And yeah, it looks fantastic. It accentuates noise in areas where the car already made noise (but was muted by the stock exhaust), and you'll hear it more when you step on the gas, but this is no beer can muffler. If you're into luxo-cruiser status, then stock or milltek, or just put some bigger tips on your stocker for the most cost effective plan (vibrant has some nice ones). Like the 4 tip look here, may have bigger aspirations, and couldn't get wider or quad tips to fit straight in the S4 valence. The stock pipes/tips are further outboard in the valence, and once you bend them inward for the S4 valence, they come out cockeyed, and/or your pipes are bent too close to the spare tire well heat shield underneath.

Haha, I think that's the first thing we've ever agreed on...

I came back from a week vacation two days ago, got in my car and was like, "man my AWE exhaust is sounding real good and I missed it." Later I realized it was sounding better/louder because my rear seats were down [:(].

I really don't understand how people think the sound is annoying... It really isn't that loud and I don't see how you could compare it to a Subie boxer engine. My advice is if you don't want to hear your exhaust, put your stock exhaust back on..

On my highway commute to work, my revs hover around 2400-2800. At that RPM, all I hear is DRONE. It gives me a headache. I work outside. I hear many cars during a given day. If I wanted my car to sound like every other STI and EVO i hear with a straight pipe or a coffee can, I would have bought an STI or EVO. I think that having a test pipe with an aftermarket exhaust sound like absolute sh*t but thats just me.
Im glad everyone enjoys their exhaust but im downright embarrassed hearing it with people in my car. I bought an Audi instead of a Subie because I grew up and moved on. Looking forward to moving on from this exhaust :)
