The 05.5 and 06 models were said to have more problems because they were new, but the 07, and 08 are the ones most people would recommend if you had to choose. The 08 is the only model year that has the s-line bumper standard, and I don't really know too much else.

This is a non- s-line bumper... standard on all 05.5-07 models:

This is the 08... with the s-line bumper:

I got an 07 2.0T non s-line 6MT about a month ago and I am really happy with it.

the 2009 A4 vs 2008 (s-line)
Engine:
2009- +20hp due to improved Variable Valve Timing and diverter valve.
2008- diverter valve prone to failure after tuning.
Driveline:
2009 - Dynamic drive select (option). Makes for on the fly switching, sporty, fun, works
2008 - youll end up buying adjustable coilovers anyway.
Both have quattro or front trak
Aesthetics:
2009 - redesigned... questionable aesthetic appeal, but very nice led lights.
2008 - S-line appearence generally accepted as a great blend of aggressive class.
Tunability
2009 - new, not too many products out yet and you will pay a premium.
2008 - fairly large and growing community, lots of products, good support base. Lots of options.
In conclusion: I would get a relatively inexpensive 2008 S-line as a platform, then start modding. Youll have a unique fun ride and wont have to spend as much to achieve a tuned ride as you would with a 2009. B-7 platform is where i would put my money... and I did.

Your question is too broad.... narrow it down for us to help you better. I could write a book about the differences from B7-B8 A4's....

I think he's asking the differences between the 05.5 through 08 models if he does choose to go that route. Just in case the 09 doesn't happen... he wants to know which B7 is the best/most reliable.

to make this as short as possible.
2005.5 never had S-line package only sport, no bluetooth option or Ipod. Did have options for rear parktronic, rear heated seats. No charge maintanence
2006 had s-line package TechII for bluetooth, still no ipod option. VERY brief options for Ti(which i don't think i have actually ever seen before). Free no charge maintanence
2007 renamed pacakges from previos two. Ipod became available, No rear heated seats(unless you go 3.2), NO free maintanence. S-line still option.
2008 S-line exterior for all cars. same options as 2007.
You will hear differing opinions but I'd say get one with the options you value most and as much warranty coverage as possible within your budget.
For me this worked out to an 07 w/quattro, stick & convenience. I had to forgo S-line and a few other little things like color DIS, memory seats, auto mirror tilt, which would have been nice to have but not the top priorities in the big picture.

I understand, but the introduction to that article highlights the main differences between the B7 and B8.

That was not clear in the original post, though. He gave me the impression that he knew about the B8 and if he couldn't get one and had to get a B7 then what were the differences ... between the two series. Taht is why I posted the link to the Edmunds article.
That said, I think that the responses here covered all the bases. [;)]

Also the the 07 & 08 have an improved head unit with larger screen and in dash 6 disk with MP3 and text.

I was actually thinking more like 2005.5 for the price. But ended up going with an 07 to get more warranty, still at a good price. 06 is not a bad deal though, given the free maintenance.
