i cant get an inspection sticker because my check engine light has been on and when i did a compression test it showed that the first cylinder was only showing 50 ....i was just wondering what the next step is to getting this fixed without getting screwed by the mechanics

Take out cluster and unplug the connection to the check engine light ... then figure out the problem later

Yep. As long as they don't see a CEL then usually they will pass you. You can also get a VAG-COM, clear your codes, bring the car in because you have 50 miles to drive after clearing your codes before the CEL comes back [:)]

you need to do a leak down check to find out why you have 50psi. it could be a blown cylinder or a head gasket. if your engine over heats...then its probably a burnt up cylinder.

depending on whats wrong, that cel may come back within minutes. maybe he should fix the problem to get rid of the CEL

Get the codes scan and cleared (you can clear them with a generic OBD II scanner, but VAG com also will tell you any intermittent codes you may or may not have). Look them up on Ross Tech http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/Category:Fault_Codes and figure what to do next from there. Once you clear the codes (taken they do not reapear) it will take a couple days till you can get your car inspected because you will not pass readiness. And that low compression is not good at all. What were the readings in the other cylinders? Maybe do another compression test to confirm it was indeed 50 psi.

You may want to find out what the codes are for before (or after) clearing them [up]

compression should be 170-185 PSI and about equal across all 4 cylinders, under 140-150psi and you have problems. 50 psi- that cyl probably isnt even firing. is your cel blinking? are you sure that number is accurate?
