I need immediate help. I'm at school, 100 miles from home. I can shift into gears with the car off (roughly) then I can't shift into any gears when I start driving.

Prior to this, a friend of mine took my car (While I was in the car with him) was revving the RPMs in first while the clutch was about half way up. He then slammed his foot on the floor with the clutch and a horrible like baseball card clipped onto bike wheel sound was made.

Smell of burning clutch followed.

I drove immediately after with that noise still there and then the noise was gone. It seemed normal.

Til now....

this is why you don't let friend drive your car. even if they know what their doing.

I didn't have a choice. I had to leave the car with someone. But can we please move on from that fact. I desperately need help.

Also, I don't know if it's the throw bearing, clutch, flywheel, or trans

Probably the clutch system.

(Assuming nothing is infront of you) Put the car in 1st gear while the car is off, keep your foot on the clutch, start the car, and then release the clutch. Does it drive in 1st gear? Repeat with second gear.

^Yes. That's the only way

Don's right, it's your clutch.

My southbend has treated me nicely, and I think their stage 1 is cheaper than a stock replacement.

seems your friend smoked your clutch

How can it be the clutch if the clutch grabs but I can't put it into gear??

So wait, what you're saying is, if you put the car into first, and engage the clutch, the car doesnt stall(without gas)?

tdn

Yeah, but I don't think the clutch had much life left to it anyway from the sounds of it.

You could try to get him to pay a little towards a replacement, but I wouldn't be a complete dick about it.

I've also paid the price of letting a friend who I trusted to drive my car, never again.

Car off: I can shift into gears roughly. Then I leave it in first gear.

TURN CAR ON - - >

With the car already in gear, I can go without a problem in the gear I was originally in but I can't shift into ANY other gears. Including reverse.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it's your pressure plate. Unfortunately, I'm familiar with the symptoms.

It's not about that. We're cool. I'm not being a dick to him and he's not being a prick. We agree that it's up to us to fix it.

I'm in PA and have 1) a spare Trans 2) 034 original clutch kit (dual mass) with 20kis on it.

Explain...

Assuming you have a basic understanding, the pressure plate isn't properly disengaging when you step on the clutch, hence why you can't go into gear under load. I'm not a mechanic, but I did stay at a holiday inn years ago. Again, anyone feel free to chime in if I'm wrong. I'm pretty confident it's your clutch. You said you're car drives fine in first when you put it into first with the engine off right? So your tranny works fine in first gear.. as Don said, you can try it in second also.

Alright, so say it is the clutch assembly: What would I have to replace?

tdn

It would be wise to buy an entire clutch kit and have your flywheel resurfaced.

1. You wouldn't want to have your tranny dropped again.
2. It sounded like you needed to replace your clutch anyway, what your friend did wouldn't have destroyed your clutch if it were in good shape, imo.
3. I like turtles.
4. If it isn't your pressure plate (of which I'm pretty certain) it's something else clutch related.

Definitely get some other opinions.

Just get a new clutch and flywheel...

Drop the trans, install clutch and flywheel, re-install transmission and life will be good again.

I'm looking on ECS tuning. They have a SACHS kit. I'm looking for OEM or very close to OEM specs. Should I go with something like that?

And I don't understand why when the car is off, I can put it into gear and when it's on, I can't..

Because the trani is semi spinning not letting you do it because its grinding gears.

Its the same reason you cant put the car in gear without the clutch.

Replace clutch, PP, have a used good flywheel on hand or now is a good time to get a lighter one, and replace the TO bearing.

Most places cant resurface the flywheel as its dual mass, they need a special tool. BTW.

And next time tell your friends you break it you buy it, dont screw around its not a honda. This is what I do, they respect me as I respect their cars.
