Thursday I purchased a 2000 S4 (APB) 6MT

When I bought it the guy thought it had thrown a bearing so I decided to teardown the motor to see what i was working with.
HERE ARE SOME PICTURES

Yesterday I got down to almost bare block. Still have to removed two pulleys and then I can send the block to get dipped.

I found that the actual problem was not any bearings at all everything is smooth.
However the was a section of about 20 teeth missing and one of the exhaust valves looks like it is not sitting properly so im pretty sure piston smacked a
valve.

PARTS THAT ARE BEING UPGRADED

30 NEW VALVES
RS4 INTAKE CAMS
RS4 INTAKE MANIFOLD
RS4 FUEL RAIL
Alternator Pulley
Crank Pulley
Power Steering Pulley
APR BI-PIPE
RS6 TURBOS
(REPLACING ALL LINES AND GASKETS, OF COURSE!)

LIGHT WEIGHT FLYWHEEL
CLUTCH
JHM SHIFT LINKAGES
JHM 01E 6-speed Full Rebuild Kit (OEM) W updated 1-2 collar

I still dont know what im going with for suspension, if any of you have any suggestions please let me know.

Well I wasnt going to get upgraded rods but the more i think about it I will be buying Pistons and Rods?

What is the stock compression on the pistons ?

PureMS is having a sale on Vogtland Coilovers now [up]

You can probably keep your pistons stock (9.3:1 compression ratio I think, and they're already forged) and just upgrade the rods.

Common T-belt failure. You are gonna have to rebuild the heads and do rods since you're going with RS6 turbos. It would probably be cheaper to buy used heads. I know someone that has a freshly rebuild pair for $600 if you end up needing some.

Well i decided even though its going to take me a little longer to build this motor but i am going to do PISTONS, RODS, VALVES, VALVE SPRINGS.

ANY RECOMMENDATIONS THIS IS MY FIRST v6, I have always had four cylinders besides my old 5 cylinder Quantum.

what's your price range first off? are you going to be on a budget, or are you able to throw money at this thing?

i'd get some IE rods. and talk to 034/eurocode/vast about building you some heads. or if you are going to do the work yourself. then contact them for just the parts

I would be asking myself why there are teeth missing from the belt...and make damn sure I find out specifically why. I know you mentioned that it looked like the piston hit the valve, but why did this happen? Perhaps this is likely the result of a component seizing. I would want to make sure I identify that part prior to going much further. I would assume you are replacing all timing belt components (idler, tensioner, water pump etc) upon reassembly of the block. Any interference/binding will be obvious once you reassemble everything and gently turn the motor over by hand at least two full rotations.

I m replacing all components idler, tensioner, water pump, pulleys, the auxilary coolant pump that sits between the heads and all the little things that may go wrong hat will be a bitch to replace when the motor is in the vehicle.

Also I Rotated the motor several times very freely, i think that the teeth from the old belt was so packed behind the balancer that it made it difficult to turn. I will post more picture tomorrow.

Not really on a budget just might take me a little longer to save for the parts . Thats the main reason I am keeping my Passat so I can take my time with this car/motor build

I've heard that some people use the 2.8 heads during a rebuild or upgrade.

If you get new rods and/or pistons, I would send the rotating assembly out to be balanced.

2.8 heads all the way...just throw the rods in =]

2.8 heads need to be built. putting the stock 2.8 heads on a 2.7t is asking to blow up the motor. You'll be back where you started if you bolt up stock 2.8 heads.

Do you have better pics of the pistons that came into contact with the valves? Judging from the pics, i dont think there was any p2v contact. I see where two of the valves arent seated completely, but they seem to still be flush with the seat so i doubt theyre bent. If the valve hit the piston then there would be very obvious signs, even if the valves and pistons were still intact. There would be really small pitting on the piston and possibly the cyl wall, and the valve seat would be miscolored in one spot where the super-heated gas escaped between the valve and seat. It looks like carbon build up is the reason that the valve isnt seated all the way. It could just be the pics, however.

The easiest way to check if a valve is bent is to use a drill press or a hand drill in a vice. Put the valve stem into the chuck on th drill and turn it on. If the valve is good there should be little to no back and forth movement from the face of the valve. If its bent it wont spin around perfectly on axis which will cause it to vibrate and/or oscilate.

Its good to see someone else doing all their own work. Good luck man, i cant wait to see the progress. My best advice is to do a ton of research and make sure you do things right the first time. It might take a little longer but itll all pay off in the end!

yeah your valves look fine, just take the heads to a machine shop and have it checked, lapped, tubbed, fluxed

you can see what a bent valve would not seat

http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/3/web/2643000-2643999/2643379_443_full.jpg?131215-297

on the flip side if you need a set of pistons i can get you some for better price. about 1050, arias, nitrided rings, tool steel upgraded wrist pins,

for the front take off the big ass bolt, you should have losen it before, then just take off the flange using the surrounding 10mm bolts, you have to remove the oil pump, for the mains take off the thrust

take a pic if your stuck i can walk you through it

if you have no scar on the cylinder wall and still have crosshatch and you have enough tolerance to hone and still be within specs you should just put in new rings and bearings, with light hone, get a diamond hone if you can

or if you want to build the bottom end then just do rods, or if you dont have enough meat on the walls do rods and pistons, get nitrided top ring if you can, alot of the ones i seen are moly which will wear quicker and need a rebuild sooner

take the compressor's belt to napa, they should either be abel to cross reference the part number on it or use their measuring gizmo and gates book to figure out which one to use. I used to be a parts guy and i ended up being the store expert on belts (among other things) after working there for 3 months.

make sense because the coolant line (TUBE) that is opposite of the thermostat looked to have a bad o- ring.

Polish with a polish wheeln then ur done, can be done in less than a hour or two, doesn't have to be perfect. Control ur speed and pressure as you get closer to edge. Search diy port and polish, lots of info pics on the honda board

Hey Gentlemen

So this weekend was the first weekend in about six months that I was able to use the lift. I helped my buddy get the '67 Austin Healy 3000 off the lift and on its side so here can paint it.[wrench][wrench]

here are some pics

BACK TO THE S4

So I decided to look underneath the vehicle because i havent at all.
So I thought I had a Milltek Exhaust

Well I sort of do, but it has been butchered [headbang]

So afterwards i was trying to clean my engine bay and

my fucking AC Compressor fell on my big toe.. SON OF A BITCH[headbang][headbang]

So I decided to call it a day.

$2K, huh? :( haven't seen one for less than $5.5K. why can't i ever find these deals?

anyway, sounds like you're planning a little something for this engine. i'll be watching this thread, too. i like to compare how different people do the same thing. should be interesting. good luck with it.

Hey, I have met in once or twice!

but on to the big news

Ok Yesterday was a really sad day! Due to this crazy fucking economy, i made the desicion to sell the S4. Everyday i saw her parked behind a fence with no front end and no motor, a caged beast just waiting to be realeased to cause distruction and chaos!

Good news is that I did sell it to a friend of mine who, well, has the needed funds to revive the beast with in !
(he doesnt know it yet but i have split custody, every other weekend, and two weeks a year...lol)

So with that, MODS could you please lock this thread!

whats up guys im very new to audizine, and i was wondering y i cannot post a new thread in this forum. but maybe thiss will do just fine.

I am planing in the near future to swap out my 3.0L v6 (b6 A4) and replace it with a 2.7t.... I have a few questions concerning what i will need and how much of a pain in the ass this will be. i have posted this on Fourtitude also.

from the info i have gathered is the 2.7t will have no problem droping into the b6 chasie and the 3.0L trans bolts up to the 2.7t's.

But for ecu propuses will i need a b5 s4 ecu or a b6 a6 ecu,

also is the wire harness the same for both

am i going to need anything else from the s4 or a6 to do this ( besides the 2.7t engine, ecu , and wire harness

thanks for any help you guys can provide

Looks like dried up coolant. You had a coolant leak somewhere, most likely from a bad gasket.

I'm rebuilding my 2.7, that had a leaky 2ndary h2o pump, under my intake it looks the same, well not as bad, but pretty crusty looking.
