Okay, I want my car to be faster, but I don't want to spend much more than 2k on a turbo upgrade. Any suggestions?

thats a really tight budget. just a k04 with a k04 flash is going to be close to your budget if not over. pc16 file would need an intercooler so +500, injectors +/- 120, flash +/- 500, k04 +750, then the exhaust, clutch, etc. maybe you should wait a bit longer and save up some more

why don't you just max out the k03 with full bolt ons for now, i hear you can get about 280lb/ft out of those little suckers, but only about 220 hp. either way, youll be looking at:

-FMIC (500)
-383cc injectors (200 used)
-exhaust (750 for a good stainless steel borla one)
-Tune (awe - $400)

then when you get some more money you can just upgrade to a k04 and everything will still bolt right up. then you can get a pc-16 file from awe for 200 extra.

Okay... The clutch & exhaust is a separate budget.

I was looking at:
K04-015 + Gaskets/Bolts - $965 (Kinetic Motorsports)
32lb Injectors - $150 (SprayIt!Racing)
Adj FPR - $175 (ECSTuning.com)
PC16 Tune - $300 (GIACUSA.com)
eBay FMIC - $300 (ebay.com)

Total $1890

Like I said, the clutch and exhaust are a separate budget... I am going with the SouthBend Stg3 Clutch & AWE Flywheel, Exhaust will be a custom built Magnaflow setup.

If youre going Garret, skip the GT2X en take the GTRS, than you have a ball bearing turbo..

I would save more money and go GTRS...

id skip the SMIC, you can prob piece together an fmic for $500 pretty quickly through ebay...

11-12-2008, 06:31 AM
Will the SMIC not be sufficient for the K04? I do not plan on going any bigger with the turbo... I was actually happy with my chipped K03, but my turbo is dying and the wife approved my $2k K04 idea :D

I know road course racing my SMIC will let the car heat soak after 2-3 laps on a 40 degree day with a POS stock turbo. For drag racing you might be able 2 get a few runs off it. All depends what you want to do. If your gonna do hard driving for more then 1320' at a time FMIC is a must, even for stock turbo chipped.[drive]

Okay... is that an upgraded SMIC or the stock one? I guess I will plan for an eBay FMIC setup then :D

There are a couple of quality FMIC kits being sold on classified sections on both here and fourtitude. And an ebay one should not cost you more than $350. As for the $2,000 budget, you may need to add maybe an extra $500 and you could have a set up.

Link (http://www.audizine.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=4676&cat=20) (tuning and injectors will cost ~$800, but can always be sought out for used/cone filter can be had for ~$30)

Why don't you just go with the Revo K04 kit?

Edit: I thought I saw the price of this at $1500 a few days ago, not sure if they raised it or if I am dreaming things

I was referring to if you wanted to go the Garret GT ball bearing route. I always thought the k04 to be rather pointless if you are looking for an upgrade (not pointless, but I have the k03s so it is pointless to me) . As maxspeed said, go with a GT2x if you want to upgrade. Or simply replace the stock turbo with a used one for $150 or so. That is what I would do anyways. That extra 50-75 hp is not worth the 2 grand in my opinion. But if it is 125+chp, then that is a different story. Just IMO.

I ran my GIAC Hammer file Ko4 with the stock side mount for almost a yr if i remember correctly... yeah it heat soaked like a bitch but it ran fine... Picked up a RaceTec fmic this past summer and made a huge differance! Pulls and pulls through the gears!

But you dont NEED a fmic right off the bat if your going KO4, its just a good idea to get one soon so your not heat soaking like a bitch!

This is my daily driver and I really can't afford to have a lot of problems... I think I am just going to buy the K04 setup and be happy. As I said before, I was content with the chipped K03, I don't need a ton of HP to keep me happy.

u dont need a clutch right away. been on my k04 for over a year and my stock clutch is fine. Just dont launch the shit out of it all the time.

u dont need an exhaust right away either...i was on my stock for a while before i upgraded to the custom magnaflow.

i needed an TT MAF for my hammer file. Not sure about yours though.

u can pay $100 less for your FPR if u just get a 5bar fpr....i think thats all u need for the p-16 file....dont quote me though. do some searching but heres the link: http://www.supremepowerparts.com/2/1/0/1054/2001_Audi_A4_Quattro_1.8T.html

also. if your upgrading because your k03 is pooped. prepair to pay for other repairs besides just the turbo. My k03 was broken when i upgraded and my exhaust manifold and cat were done for.

good luck! i wish my hammer file cost $300!!??! jeez i payed like $800 for mine! [evilmad]

edit: oh, and about the fmic. I got an ebay one for around 300. Been perfect ever since. no heat soak whatsoever. the ebay core will suffice for the k04 but any larger and u gotta get something a bit bigger/better quality.

edit again: did some searching for u. i was wrong. no 5bar fpr, u need an adjustable. and u dont need another maf either..

Yeah, I have done a good bit of research on the K04 and what I will need. The clutch will be in before the K04 gets here because my stock clutch would slip occasionally when driving the chipped K03 hard. My K03 isn't completely bad, the seals are going though and as far as my wife knows... it's gone[wrench]

Because Revo is garbage?
Go with the GT2X kit before a KKK kit.

you would have to be getting some killer deals and not a ball bearing turbo. Cheap manifolds aren't worth the wasted time, ask Bassed(Ian) about that

Anyways. back to the OP. $2K won't get you real far, for starters you haven't figured shipping on all those items.

I killed my clutch with a plain K03 on chipped power (one week after chipping). I spent almost $1K on my flywheel and clutch alone. +$500 tune, +$400 exhaust, +$25 spark plugs, MBC $40, and free mods like gutting the airbox and hand porting the throttle body/intake manifold. I also replaced my K03 when it died for a K03s(60K on a stock car) for $170 shipped.
I went the cheap route with my exhaust and I have been given a lot of shit for it, I'd advise otherwise.

NTM good luck finding a K04-15 right now, last I knew they were back ordered.

GT2x can make some decent power, but I'd wait it out and spring for the GTRS. They make more power and there's more tuning backing.

As far as the list you have comprised, check the classifieds. You can find a set of TT injectors for $125-200 and they'll have a spray pattern better suited for our cars.

EDIT: FMIC is the way to go. I can't make it 2 laps around Grattan, or two trips down the 1/4mi before my intercooler is heatsoaked.

FREE SHIPPING from Kinetic on the Turbo... I don't imagine any of the other parts are going to be too awfully expensive to ship. Shipping on the FMIC is $50, so I need to add about $100 more to my list to cover shipping... Still under budget... :D

you deff need an adj. fpr for the PC-16 file since it tends to run on the rich side even at 3bar which the tune calls for, FWIW when i had mine i ran it at ~2.7bar [up]
