View Full Version : Thinking about installing a KO4

Hi guys

I am looking into installing a KO4 turbo on my 2000 1.8T. What I need to know is other than the turbo, what other things will I have to get to make the turbo run at it's optimum? Do I have to have the software changed on the ECU or is it just plug and play?
Sorry if the questions are stupid but I have never installed a new turbo. All help gratefully received. [:)]

you will need to acquire the right gaskets as well as any hosing that might need to be replaced. There are kits that come with everything you need for a reasonable price, I think Jeremy(@ matrix iirc) has some kits he was selling cheap for around $1500 that included the ECU upgrade. The ECU upgrade isn't required but without it your call will be running the engine/boost maps for the k03 and so the improvement you see will be minimal.

There are lots of folks on here that have done this upgrade, I'm sure they'll post their experiences.

I pieced mine together for under $1100.

I would suggest K04, GIAC, front mount intercooler, GIAC W/J31 software file. Of course you can just install a K04 without the extra's but it won't put out much more power than a K03.

Pretty good route up there^^^^^

Maybe some injectors if you want to get crazy.

Why? Piecing it together you get the same thing as buying a kit. Did you have trouble sourcing some of the parts?

Thanks for the info gents. Looks like I'm gonna buy me a kit and maybe some new injectors.

If I were to go for the larger injectors how far could I take it? IE: if i wanted to, could I fit a set of RS4 injectors or is that just being stupid?

becuase i bought an overpriced k04 off ebay...that came with a 4.0 fpr and i needed a 5.0 then i bought a new ecu and tracked down a k04 chip had to send it out to have it soldered in and sell my old ecu and apr chip..

Since noone is replying I will throw a bone and say you would be good to go with 310cc injectors but RS4 might be too much (380cc)??!!! You would run too rich.

Just heard back from Jeremy and if I get a kit from anyone then I will def get mine from him. He's mailed me back with a really good price ( $1575 - all hardware included).

I thought that RS4 injectors would be too much but thanks for the info sumpsfast. Will prob go with the 310cc as you suggest.

Don't bother with larger injectors..unless you get the proper software to take advantage of larger injectors otherwise you will just end up burning rich. FYI I'm running larger injectors with a K04 but I also have software that is written for the bigger injectors.

You can compensate for the larger injectors by lowering the fuel pressure.

I ran the 310s with the J31 software @ ~3.7 bar and it ran great!

Does the J31 software with 310cc injectors work with a 2001 DBW A4? Or only the N-DBW?

thanks!

Yep I have GIAC...I run a file for K04+FMIC+larger injectors

But for your year it would be a different story If your gonna run a FMIC you want the J31 file. Without FMIC K31 or K05 not sure about injectors for M.Y. 2000.

Here is my story:

I currently have J31 by GIAC setup with fmic, 310cc injectors, ajustable fpr set to 3.5bar or 52 psi, N75J exhaust of course and I love my setup, lots of torque, pulls like crazy and the K04 sounds like a jet engine which is something that I love about it the most lol, but yeah I'm peaking at about 30psi believe it or not.

I pieced mine together for a total of $785 (GIAC software upgrade, 5 bar FPR, KO4 turbo, gaskets).

Just under 200 at the wheels @5250 rpm
210 torque at the wheels @4750 rpm

We have two K04s currently in stock and of course the best price in the industry for the complete K04 kit---everything you will need, down to the oil return line gasket!

$1495 for DBC
$1575 for DBW

Piecing your own kit together is a headache and plus, you save money by buying the K04 kit from a GIAC dealer like ourselves as the GIAC K04 software costs less when buying it in the complete K04 kit vs buying it outright.

Let me know if there are any questions.

Best,
Jeremy

I'd stick with The Old Tried and True: Matrix or AWE they will never steer you wrong and offer "the customer service you deserve." IMHO![;)] [;)]

I'm looking into upgrading next year, do you know if there something comparable to J31 software for 2001 DBW?

if not, what is the difference (if any) in hp/torque between the 2000 and 2001 software?

thnx..

We honestly haven't dynoed the '00 and '01 software back to back.

In talking with GIAC more about the J31 files, DBW cars, etc, the DBW A4 1.8Ts seem to all run differently. One 018P car may run very well on the J31 file and another 018P car with the same mods won't.

Just a word to the wise...
