View Full Version : B5 manual chatter

I have a 01.5 A4 1.8tqm. My trans has been making a rattle-like whine noise when accelerating only in first gear. The higher the rpm, the louder it seems to get, but if I very slowly, lightly depress the gas pedal I can slowly accelerate without making much noise. Also, it has developed a bad chatter in neutral. If I leave it in neutral with clutch engaged (pedal out) and slowly move the shifter towards first gear, the chatter gets way more noticable. With the clutch disengaged (pedal pushed in) the noise is gone. Plan on having the dealer take a look at it; just want some opinions on what you guys think the cause can be

-also, the car runs fine. clutch does not slip at all and 1st gear doesn't skip or anything like that either

whining is normally a bearing that is on its way out. And you say chatter in neutral, so my guess would be throw out bearing or something related to the slave.

it seems like many people are having clutch issues, including my self.
