View Full Version : Blown out D2S bulbs

I have the A8 xenon kit with the Philips 4300K bulbs, and the left bulb blew out about a month after installation. I bought a Osram replacement from AZ and after 3 weeks the same side blew that one out? I have checked all the wires for proper connection and grounding...and they DID work very well for the 3-4 weeks...could there be a problem with my ballast maybe?

Anyone else have issues like this?

Yeah, there for sure could be a ballast issue. Try checking the interior connector that actually touch the xenon bulb at the base. Make sure they are clean and not bent in any way.

I had a ballast go bad on me, but it burned out internally. Not the bulbs

Do you know if Protocold warranties the bulbs? It was after driving in some seriously heavy rain yesterday...so maybe the ballast shorted...and blew out the bulb?

Whats the best place for replacement bulbs?

You can get the bulbs rather cheap on Ebay these days. I've seen single stock replacements go for as low as $30.

I just paid $75 for a set shipped...not too bad i guess. Hopefully this will not be a regular occurance.

BTW...is that the Magnum SS exhaust on your car? Thats sick :)
I want one!!

Nope, My exhaust is a custom setup at this point. The rear muffler is a Borla V1 with custom 4" tips.

Currently running just the stock K03 for now, but plans are in the works my friend.

Me too...I am waiting for the K04s to get in...and I plan on an upgrade in another couple of weeks. I have a bad wastegate actuator..and only hitting like 15psi ;( sucks.

K04 isn't enough for me. I didn't get that Stage 3 clutch for nuttin[;)]

Not to be a jerk but you get what you pay for. I wouldn't bother spending $30 on an HID bulb (unles you're positive it's an authentic Philips or Osram Sylvania), but that's just me.

But like EVIL said, it's more than likely a ballast issue. HID bulbs shouldn't fail that quickly, they should hold up for years. Definitely try to contact Protocol about your issue, he should be able to help.

I'm sure $30 does sound crappy, But it's just been a few sets I've seen that are direct OEM, osram replacement. Warrantied and worth a shot if I was blowing them away.

If it is a bad ballast, i will replace it.

Since you got the A8 ballast, you should be checking to see if you have waterproofing problem. You are supposed to prevent the water to get into the ballast yourself since you can basically mount those ballast anywhere. If water gets in, it is not covered in the warranty.

is the plastic around the base of the bulb melted at all?
