asking this question for my brother, he and his business partner are splitting the cost of a high speed sports car... he asked me for my 2 cents, and i said go with the m6 just because i have a passion for that car..

but which is actually better? they are similar in price, and engine specs...

Audi R8 Starting at $109,000*
The mid-mounted V8 engine with 4.2 liter displacement and four-valve FSIĀ® technology produces 420 hp and accelerates the Audi R8 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. The maximum torque of 317 lb-ft delivers breathtaking thrust. The top speed is 187 mph. But ultimately these numbers merely prepare the ground for something that is impossible to express in numbers: the supreme driving experience.

BMW M6 $100,300 MSRP
5.0-liter, V-10 engine, 500 hp
High performance from high-speed engines: that's the philosophy of BMW M. This compact, high-revving, V-10 power unit develops enormous thrust and muscle that's always on tap. At 5.0 liters of displacement and 500 horsepower, the V-10 produces 100 horsepower per liter - a remarkable feat for a naturally aspirated production engine. And its power-to-weight ratio of one horsepower per each eight pounds is a figure more representative of a racecar than one you'd have in your driveway.

r8 without a doubt, in my opinion m6's are ugly as sin, and just dont have the wow factor that the r8 brings to the table

r8 all the way, i agree that m6's are very ugly. also, the r8 is almost guaranteed to be superior in handling characteristics. lastly, i have seen 1 r8 on the street, yet i've seen several m6's.

I love bimmer's but R8 all the way on this one!
It looks so much better and stands out more.

Apples and oranges 100%.

The R8 is a small mid-engined sports coupe that is very nicely balanced.

The M6 is a heavy front-engined sports coupe that is balanced like a baseball bat.

Both will do nice donuts but, the R8 will do a lot more.[;)]

The r8 is without a doubt the better car. I'm a big BMW fan and I would like to find any reason to choose the m6 over the r8 on an Audi forum, but I just can't... well, the bmw has room for the kids.

I've driven both and I'd highly recommend the r8 if you can afford it.

However, staying within that price range.. I'd take a GT3.

you can get a low mileage M6 (<5k miles) for <$70k

you can get a low mileage R8 (<5k miles) for sticker +10-20k ($140-150k)

If they MSRPs are that close, it seems that people tend to vote with their wallets.

ugly ass M6 compare to a elegant R8, what would you choose.

personally i have had the opportunity to drive both cars this summer, and from my experience they are 2 tottaly different cars.
if you want a fast car the m6 is the one for you, but if you want something to turn heads and handle amazingly and have a piece of audi history go for the R8
R8 FTMFW!!!!!
just my 2 cents

yeah its pretty simpe, the M6 is a bit faster, although it doesnt have the crazy look like the R8 does, and there is also about a 70,000$ difference in prices lol.

Im going to have to be the black sheep. M6 just for the pure speed that things brings on. I drove one and that car is very fast, very fast. I know the R8 is better looking and its of course an audi and we all love audis but just my opinion m6 has it all.

the R8 will hand the M6 its ass in anything short of a triple digit high speed straight line run over 120 mph.

but good luck getting one.

That thing is barely faster than the r8 on a strip, it's a drivers race.

On a course, a r8 would smoke an m6.

Both with plenty of power that it's not even worth comparing the two on that alone.

Anyway, I'm curious - what is "it all" that the m6 has?

R8s are backordered for a while and M6 are probably not. The M6 is twice as big as the R8 w/o a doubt, its a gigantic 2 door.

Now go to a Bimmer forum and ask the same question and see what type of response youll get

I have personally seen an RS4 pull on a M6 Convertible off the roll. So the R8 is faster most of the time.

m6 is a great car, but i'd take the r8.
i read on the german car blog that the r8 has been sold out through 2009.

i'd wait for the v10.

thats probably because the driver of the M6 didn't go into iDrive and change the cars DD set up of like 390hp to its full potential of 504hp or the M6 was broken or something lol, I have driven an M6, there fast as tits and If you look at stats there is no way in hell that the RS4 could pull on one, unless the RS was modded an additional 100hp...not hating on the RS4 its just facts.

Not to start an argument, but a stock M6 Convertible runs a 12.9@111mph according to Road and Track and the RS4 runs a 12.8@110mph according to Road and Track. Figuring in drivers error and not perfect conditions the better driver wins the race.

i know the M5 was available in manual but was the M6 the same? If not..then there really isn't much error margin for the M6..

question for OP..as they split the cost then..is this a company car that may be used to pick up clients every now and then?

Nah its just for fun apparently... They each use it for a week at a time.

But they chose the m6. Got a black on black rims fully loaded 2008 m6, $140,000 between them both.. ill post pics when i can. SICK car

There's no way I'd share a expensive asset like that, could totally ruin what was once a great business partnership.

audi forum - audi responses...

To be more unique, I'd go with an R8. To be more understated and a bit faster, M6.

It's a toss up if you ask me, I'm just partial to the R8, stick shift, quattro driving experience!

I remembered amongst the first few car magazine comparison, CAR did one with the R8, 911C4S, Aston Vantage (or DB9) and the M6. The M6 is dead last in that test and everyone was not very impressed.

sorry, but there's no comparison.

the r8 is a supercar...the m6 is just a high-end bmw...it also looks like major ass.

my opinion of course.

EDIT: even the bmw owners seem to know the r8 owns the m6...but like most of us are saying...it's really a silly comparison.

M6 is a sharp car but the R8 is more of a supercar, no comparison IMHO. I say you wait until the RS5 comes out and go for that one!

whartung
08-24-2008, 03:57 PM
I dont really need to reiterate the differences between the supercar R8 and the 2+2 grand touring BMW with an oversized engine stuffed in it. However, a new R8, even if you were on the list to get one, has a mark up that has them priced at like 160, 170 thousand new. M6 convertible though? Unless you're in LA, I bet you could haggle them down to if not below MSRP... still a tough decision?

On another note, as a response to whoever suggested the GT3RS and the GT2, both of them fall out of the price range as well. GT2 is ~193k stock, and the GT3RS after mark up, is probably at least 150, plus you have to be on a list as well...

Unless you have kids to stuff in the backseat, R8 FTW...

Typical of Audizine, people just want to hear themselves talk (type) rather than take the time to read through a thread. [rolleyes]
