This build will have a slightly bigger budget. Last time around I had a 3 week window and a smaller budget. I just didn't have enough cash or time to do exactly what I wanted. Hopefully I can get it right this time.. I'm picking up and AEB head this weekend off a friend to build in the mean time while I order and wait for parts to come in.

Already have:
Je Pistons
Scat Rods
20mm Pins
Piston rings
034 coated bearings
Powder Coated pulleys and tensioners
Gasket Set
BOV

In the mail:
Garrett Gt3076r .82 ar
034 valve springs
8 exhaust valves
Piping
FMIC

MAP based Meth kit

Still need to order
Tapp Software

Still lots of work ahead of me. Gathering parts is the worst part. Does anyone know where I can buy new valve seats for a 20v head?

bassed
06-04-2008, 10:45 AM
Between you, me and Kevin's BAT we should be having lots of fun and pribaly the most accumulated B5 whp within a 10 mile radius:)

Why build the head so much, you don't drag race:)

Poopie
06-04-2008, 10:52 AM
I wanna take it up to 8k. Plus it gives me a reason to have a large tach....JK

Might as well throw in springs while I'll have the head apart. I'm keeping the stock retainers. I'm told they would last longer. Like Ian said, this isn't a drag racer.

I'm still looking for a place that sells valve seats.

317ssayzarc (Jakes) head is fully built and I was in the car when it was hitting slightly under 8k. I'd definately say its worth it as you can get 70 mph out of 2nd gear that way and on.

Are you using the AWM block? AEG 2.0 8V crank fits that.

Staying 1.8l. The extra grand to go .2l wasn't worth it for me. I also like to keep most of the build in house. If I went 2.0l I would have gone with a gt35. If the .82 ar proves to be too laggy, I have a .63 ar housing to slap on.

I work for a company designing/developing/research battery hardware design. Mostly lithium ion cells. I'm a full time student though for Electrical Engineering. Hopefully graduating.....sometime in the future. LOL

Thats what I would do and I also have an AWM. This might be the first documented AWM build here, minus the head. WIll you be using the hydraulic cam chain tensioner?

Electrical engineering is definately the foundation for the company you work for. I just graduated mechanical engineering last month.

Actually it would be nice if I had an ME degree with material science. Oh well, at the moment its just a job and not a career.

Bassed has a built 2.0 AWM.

I'm going with the hydrolic tensioner. The tune will be for mafless, catless, sai delete, and VVT delete.

Nice setup then, but I'd like to be running both MAF and MAP data.

I'd like to see the AMW torn apart in few shots. Mine is aching to leave the bay for a refresher.

What manifold?

Yup I have a 2.0 AWM, but an AEB head with VVT:) I think I'm the first fully built 2.0 for an AWM on here, AW and pretty much all the forums, but not the first to do so by any means:)

Tune doesnt need to delete VVT just unplug the sensor.

I am no expert, but it is not the engine build per se but the bigger turbo set up that needs to pass inspection. In my state, to pass emissions they simply use the little OBD port during inspection. Other states work different. If the engine throws a code, you simply do not pass inspection. Whether that be for a light bulb to emissions. That is why a tune for a Big Turbo set up is very important, among other reasons. Another reason why so many go the Unitronics route or the CTapp route. They remove any emission codes that would barr you from passing inspection.

*no expert, just what I know

Eurotuned_A4

doesnt really matter for me right now since the county i live in doesnt require emissions. maybe ill just keep the car registered here....lol. once i upgrade it would be all sorted out. uintil then i watch everyone else build their engines while my rods sit under my bed[:p]

I hope to see all these BT cars from PA during Waterfest.

Where do you get an extra grand to go 2.0L?

06a block:
$300 for a cast crank
$300 for machining and honing
piston and ring cost is built in already since you're getting forged pistons (unless you already had 81mm forged pistons somewhere)
bearings are already built in since you're doing them anyway

Nebone
06-05-2008, 08:54 AM
He might as well hone the stock 1.8T block. Clint had a AEG crank for sale for like $100.

AEG is not plug and play it requires machining. It will cost Aeron close to 1k to go 2.0L on a AWM. I know because I have a 2.0L AWM(1980cc).

Yes I picked up the 81mm pistons as a package deal. I'm fine with a higher spool up. Lag is just foreplay. If its laggy I'll just put a .63 ar housing on that I have laying around. It shouldn't spool that much later then a 71r. On the 3071r i was hitting 20 psi at 3700-3800 rpm.

he cant use the AEG crank for the 06A block since hes 058... That means he needs an ABA (preferably OBD1) and a modified oil squirter, block walls and oil pump shaft [headbang]

That is what I thought... 058 block. Hence why I stuffed the 06A before my numbers. I just didn't read which block he had so I wasn't entirely sure. Makes perfect sense. Its not easy (and inexpensive) to stroke a 058 block.

Looking forward to hearing how this works out for you! Glad to hear you found the vehicle of choice!

Poopie
06-06-2008, 08:40 AM
yeah i knew the 058 was a bit more expensive to stroke to 2.0l. But the mafless tune is what sold me on the awm. I would throw up if i had to set up another intake and maf.

Hot rodders have been doing it forever.

The old guy in my office told me that canadian babies chew on hockey pucks rather than teething rings. Said it gets them used to the taste of rubber in their mouth. Told him there has to be a few dirty jokes in there somewhere. He turned bright red and walked away.

LOL C'mon there are different flavors now. Greasy latex is a thing of the past

Anyways, I finally spoke to Chris Tapp. He said I would have trouble hitting 400whp on pump with out a tubular mani and cams. I definitely don't want a tubular just cause of cost and reliability. Cams will come and I guess I can fab up an intake manifold. I'm getting a two program ECU. I'm still debating whether I want to have a pump/meth combo or a pump/c16 combo and lemmi the pump file a few degrees for meth injection. I'm leaning towards the pump/c16 combo. No more flip switch though to change files! all done through the cruise control.

Get large (puck diameter) metal washers and sandwitch the hockey pucks between them, then run the bolt through all that. Like a Big-Mac.

Pretty much as close to a tubular in flow as possible. Equal runners, and the merge collection is spot on, I couldn't be happier! Anyone who wants a SPA mani better get in touch with SPA or I asap they are limited in inventory and the backorders are piled high.

A little update. I took the AEB head i'm swapping to the engine shop to have it hot tanked and have a 3 angle valve job done and to fix 3 valve seats that got dented when the motor popped. No porting or anything is done. When I get it back I might clean up the casting on the ports, but nothing crazy. I got my 034 valve springs and new supertech exhaust valves in. Hopefully I can pick up my cleaned head today.

I cleaned up some valves.

Got the head back from the machine shop. A few months ago it seemed like everyone had head problems and worn valve guides. I stripped down the aeb head again to have the guides checked out. One one needed replacing. There were 2 more that were close but the machinist said that the exhaust guides are always a hair loose and that replacing it would stress the head. I had the one replaced and the one valve seat redone and $50 bucks out the door. sweeeeet. now back to assembly. maybe i'll post up a pic or two.

eehh new plans. That job is put on hold. I'm sure it will be there in the future.

Yeah the build is actually starting to pick up. I just need to pick up a new VVT cam chain tensioner and the head will be full assembled. I also need oil dip stick tube, and an 06a oil pan. I should be picking up an 06a AWP block this weekend to start building the bottom end.

Also in the mail is ARP head bolts, thermostat, and timing belt tensioner.

anyways, build is slowly coming together. I have too many projects. I cleaned out my garage a bit. Bought a new torpedo heater, got a snow blower, stacked some things on two carts. Space is limited. This guy heats up a two car garage to 65* in no time. I got it 50% off at lowes. $139.50!!! i couldn't pass it up. I'm running it on diesel now cause i couldn't find any kerosene on the weekend.

I have a motor swap for an Audizine member in a week or two. Just waiting for his car and motor to arrive. Nothing special, just swapping in an AEB. My motor is assembled though. I have a few pics I need to upload from my phone though. Here is an assembled pic.

That's pretty much the engine hardware set.

I didn't take the job. I tanked a class and pushed back my graduation. Job market is pretty harsh for engineers. If anyone has a foot in somewhere let me know. A lot of places I inquired about tell me there isn't enough money to hire a newbie. I don't even like electrical engineering anyways so I don't know why i am trying so hard. I'm thinking about just staying in school and going for mechanical engineering. I will have a double mechanical and electrical engineering with a minor in business marketing. If I can't get a well paying job after that I have no hope for myself. The places willing to give me a job aren't paying much more then the job I have right now. I got it pretty easy at my job now so I might as well sit on it since its pretty secure till i land in something better.

ehehh 2.0l wasn't worth the money. I don't mind spool up. Plus with the hardware in the head, I can make decent power up top. I'm confident I can hit 400awhp on pump 93 at like 24-25ish psi on the mafless tapp tune. Those are my goals atleast. From what I've searched, its pretty realistic. Turbo is gt30r .82 ar. I have never seen any gains worth writing home about from them... This given I have seen a few builds and dynos of cars running them.

Compared to the cat cams, such as 3652,53s, and 58s. The revolver gains seem hardly worth the effort. I am not trying to offend anyone here. Its not about drag racing, its about making power.

If you look @ Jake's father's B6 (running 3658s) - He has a broad power band, very nice torque curve (For the non drag racers) and SOLID TOP END-- with a GT3076R to boot.

Your cam setup is very important to optimizing your airflow. ---------------------In and Out------------------

I think it will be a totally different situation on a B5 fueling setup... Even Javad made a comment which supports my theory on a 4 bar, rising FPR allowing for ~400AWHP with 630s.

Don't the B6's run out of injectors faster since they are a returnless system? Bobq says the 630s should safe to 430whp.

So what do you guys think? Go with larger injectors? I haven't sent my ecu out so I think i might as well go with 1000cc injectors. I'm gonna run race gas and high boost (28-30psi)

I am going with the new bosch 1000cc high z units (if I ever decide to really see this thing through), but my end goal is a little bit higher than 400 awhp.

The bosch units are rather expensive though, so you should really think on it.

Just re-read this thread. So, engine is already built and you recently picked up the ME7 Suite? Didn't you say you had 225 TT pistons (can't recall engine code)? Or did you mean you had those in an actual 225 TT?

And 2008? lol

Poopie
01-11-2012, 11:17 AM
Hahaha yeah well I don't have a garage in Philly so I only work on it when I go back to my parents. Running 8.5:1 je pistons now. I built the engine after my sedan was totaled and I couldnt settle on a tune. At first I was going back to a standard tapp ots tune but I really wanted to squeeze the most out of the setup so I began inquiring about local Dyno tunes. Then people started getting into maestro and the support for it grew. I also bought a tig welder so I started fabbing my own things then all of a sudden it's 3 years later. I also had an e30 somewhere in between.

Seerlah
01-11-2012, 12:04 PM
You wouldn't happen to still have those old TT pistions laying around, would you?

Poopie
01-11-2012, 12:33 PM
nope don't have them anymore. i got them off ebay. in reality after you spend money on new rings and refurbing the pistons, you are better of just getting some mahle's

Seerlah
01-11-2012, 01:21 PM
I picked up AEB pistons and Brute rods for $500 shipped. But if you had the TT pistons, I would have resold these AEBs and used yours with the 9:1 CR. Trying to keep my build on a budget, and can't afford fancy pistons [:p].

And what do you mean by refurbishing the pistons? I was just planning on throwing them in a bucket of degreaser dilluted with water, and going at them with a brush. Is this not a good idea?

Poopie
01-11-2012, 02:07 PM
I would be careful of what solvent you use cause I had a set of awm pistons sitting in degreaser and the coating on the skirt fell apart. You should be fine though if you don't leave degreaser on them too long. I had mine diluted 1:1. Just clean the gunk off and out of the ring grooves. They are gonna get dirty in the motor anyways.

Seerlah
01-11-2012, 02:21 PM
Thanks for that. I would have never gave it one thought. And since you gave me a fair warning, did a little Google searching. What's your opinion on Piston Kleen? Sorry if my questions are bothersome [cool].

And to keep the thread on topic: Do you plan to tune yourself or have a professional do it?

Poopie
01-11-2012, 03:02 PM
I used oil eater for a lot of stuff. I used this industrial engine degreaser on the pistons. It's potent stuff.

I plan on getting the car running on the base file from tapp and tweaking from there. I'll be playing with maf and mafless set ups. I'm just wondering if I can run a bov on the maf set up. I'm not sure how it will react losing metered air. I'll have to see what the b6 guys are doing.

Seerlah
01-11-2012, 03:08 PM
Why not just recirculate it, if running a MAF? If you feel the Forge units are not large enough, Tial makes a recirculating valve. And I think the Synapse one can be changed from vent to recirculating.

A tip to avoid getting poked would also be helpfull!

Poopie
01-12-2012, 10:03 AM
haha well there is a technique to cutting the hose. You can try cutting the braids very slow with a cutoff wheel. Or you can zip it as fast as possible and cooling it down in cool water. This prevents the inner layer of stainless braid to lift off the rubber. You can also use a sharp chisel and a hammer to slice through it over an aluminum block. This method sucks cause you oval the hose and its difficult to squeeze into the sleeve end of the fitting. Then just be careful or wear gloves.

Pull my head after a failed compression check. 20 bent valves :(. Just ordered another set and gonna try again. I also think I found the cause of why I don't have spark to cylinder 1. I took apart the wiring harness and the blue signal pulled right out of the connector. Gonna replace the broken connector and crimp on a new connection. I also have to smooth out the little nicks from the valves kissing the pistons. I hope to be running next weekend!!

2 nicks on the tops from the exhaust valves and barely anything from the intake. some light sanding will take like 90% of it away.

i just wanna hear the motor start and have the car move. i'm already planning to go 83mm pistons and stroke it next year.

if the blue signal is really the culprit i'm ordering this kit right away.

issues
-flywheel has a very audible chatter
-stock aeb i put in has a pretty loud valve train.
-figured i need an oil pressure gauge too
-button up the wideband wiring
-do a little tuning, it runs better with out the maf. No code for it so far so maybe i'll convert it over all mafless. idles and drives fine. i went around the block.
-a few exhaust leaks.

finally got around to shooting some epoxy primer. just a little bit more body work and should be base coating and clearing on sunday.

Doing just the hood and the bumper for now to get it inspected. Will do the rear bumper and side skirts soon after. Not really sure why i'm doing them all separate, but oh well. Mostly because i don't have the space to spread out all the pieces to spray at once anyways.

moved out of my garage to bake in the sun a little bit.

does anyone in SE pennsylvania have a good hook up on windshield repair? Local place wants 241 to replace the cracked windshield. I feel like there is cheaper out there. autoglass4you quoted me $171 but they don't service my area and its not worth the drive.

here is more body work and paint

i laid on the cleat on the front bumper too thick with out enough flash time between coats. i came back the there was tons of solvent pop in the clear. scuffed and reshot the base and the clear again. Learning more and more with everything i paint.

hood, bumper, rear lower valance done, side skirts are getting the treatment now.

also did the $20 pepboys lower molding on it.
definitely a lot cleaner than my trimmed a4 moldings. i didn't want to pay for s4 moldings and i'm eventually gonna shave all the lower holes and stuff when the doors get painted.

hahah yeah its kinda funny. whats one person gonna do with one sideskirt?

anyways, some bad news. Turbo either ingested itself or something, blades got all chewed up. I pulled the entire motor out to inspect after i found turbo blades bits in the oil. The bearings in the motor look great though. just gonna go ahead and replace the main and rod bearings since its apart. I ordered a comp ct4 5858 as a replacement. 1mm inducer on the exhaust wheel. [>_<]

Both of them use their own wheel design so there can be a slight difference.

You shouldn't have a problem hitting 450whp on pump gas with the CT4-5858. Pete(grip99) is running the CT4-5562 and we figure he was around 450whp on pump gas pushing 26psi when he was running 1.8L displacement, his turbo is rated at 590hp while the CT4-5858 is rated at 605.

Yeah the Comp Turbo has a CHRA that is about 1/2" longer then a Garrett GT, so the inlet will sit forward that 1/2". Just be glad your not putting in a PTE since those have an even longer CHRA which puts the turbo even more forward then the Comp Turbo.

i'm gonna eventually build my own tubular next year. i was gonna redo my exhaust to a full stainless vbanded set up so i'll start collecting pieces soon so i'll just redo the intake then. i've read the mafless set up is harder to tune. people have made like 50 more hp from just connecting the maf on a dyno with maestro with no tuning changes. what are your thoughts?

Running a MAF helps with idle and part throttle tuning, shouldn't make any difference at WOT.

It's back. The schrick 252/260 cams were tricky to time with out a cam card or an adjustable cam gear. I feel like its slightly retarded and my timing marks are off by two teeth, but the cams themselves are correctly timed. I pulled the head to check I didn't damage valves and changed the head gasket while I was in there. It runs well now. I also redid the wiring harness a bit. I just need to clean up the interior and pull the old radio and wiring and do a better job on it.

My 5858 JB turbo developed some nasty shaft play and started rubbing the compressor housing. So I ordered a new triplex ct4 5858 with ETT from our very own, Mike Hood. The turbo only had about 8k miles on it. I think i'm giving on up journal bearing turbos and going back to ball bearings.

Anyway, while the car is down, I'm going to make the most of this and build my tube manifold. I have some stainless pipe coming along with some more flanges so I will be practicing tigging up some pipe and getting my settings down before i go to town on a manifold. Hopefully i will be able to get a legit air filter back on or have room to make a turbo inlet with a maf.

Correct, they don't. It is just the Triplex that needs a restrictor. Not sure if it has always been that way or something they changed not long ago.
But I don't think that is what would have caused a problem since he has been running the turbo for a year.

Pretty sure it is a -4 line for the JB and -3 with restrictor for the Triplex. I am waiting for Justin to email me back to make sure that is 100% correct.

I think a 2.0T owner tried running a -3 line with his JB and it starved. He then changed to a Triplex turbo. That is the guy in MD that drag races his red GTI.

Mike posted some good links. Don't let me stop you from cutting them yourself, but they are readily available from us and others.

We can also supply them with a flange already welded.

Any particular reason you don't want to go v-band? No worry of things loosening up with vibrations, infinite clocking angle, super easy on off, etc.

Or are you going divided or is the turbo you got already have a T flange?

Looking good either way.

I thought you were gonna post some Cnc fully machined crazy stuff. Haha well the pipe was $24 and 304 flanges are cheap or I could mill my own. I'd rather have the satisfaction of making my mani from the ground up.

There are some good guides to welding up collectors but some of the angles just weren't that accurate for a milled part. Some were compensation for chop saw thickness so I decided to model up my own so I know the exact angles to make my cuts.

No back purge doesn't mean you can't go full penetration, not like you're going to use those practice pieces on your manifold. It'll just crystallize and won't be stainless anymore.

Solar Flux works well if you don't want to waste Argon.

My tig welder has already paid for itself. I was modifying control arms for the tt/r32s. Also did my exhaust, friends exhaust, a few downpipes, my piping etc. also made tools for myself. Hopefully I can get more use out of my mini lathe too.

Organized on a spare cart I was just storing parts on. Tossed all that crap in the trash. Lol. B5ers should regularly check my trash. Good stuff that I don't feel like selling. http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc457/aarontrieu/EF5DBD18-8729-4AD7-B110-73C31E831BD3-119-0000005D03688312_zps660adb92.jpg

It's an Eastwood AC dc tig 200. I'm thinking about upgrading next year to something with more adjustments.

How do you like it? I've been thinking about picking up a cheap tig, and that one seems perfect. I can't justify spending 2k on a welder just for hobby use.

It's not just the welder, but all the things you need with it. Like helmet, argon tank, flow meter, cart, wiring to the garage, tungsten and so on. Now that I have all that established, I can work towards a better welded. Believe it or not, my first tig was a harbor freight one. It was actually really good. Lol

But the Eastwood is great since I can do aluminum. It's fixed frequency and theres no upslope or downslope and pulse.

True true. I've already got a MIG, so I've got most of the accessories. Ill have to do some more research. I've been playing with a real nice Lincoln at school so I'm already spoiled lol. [:D]

Looking forward to more progress. Lookin good so far. [up]

it was tricky setting up the pipes to clear the frame rail. I did my best at guessing and using pictures i took with references as a guide. I guess my hopes of an equal length are out the window.

turbo on the check if i can sneak a 3in down pipe between the fender well and valve cover. all good. Also had clearance for the oil return. just need a 45* fitting. My old return line should work too. No need to make a new one.
