You doing the work yourself?

I have a question about the large intercooler from 034. I was looking at that and it fits behind the stock bumper (with trimming) which is a [up] in my book. But the max crank hp for the turbo you chosen is what? 500 or 550hp? And the core max is set at 500hp I believe. Is that ok to run?

And what if one was to use the stock bumper? Only about 1/4 of the intercooler itself would get direct flow. That can't be sufficient for that size turbo. Or can it?

I am asking this as I was looking at this and contemplating on it couple weeks ago.

I will be hopefully doing all of the work myself.

I plan on getting an s4 or rs4 replica front bumper soon to get the flow. I will probably run bumper-less for the time being. I feel a 500hp capable intercooler will be sufficent since im only shooting for around 350-360whp. We shall see though.

24" Wide - 10.5" Tall - 3.0" Thickness. That size fmic doesn't exactly fit behind the stock bumper with "trimming", much more work and much more cutting will be needed. That is a Garrett 600hp core, nearly exactly the same size ER uses for the Competition and they say that it will not fit behind the stock bumper without plenty of cutting and this is why they suggest using a bumper that has more room.

This is quoted from the 034 website. I am by no means trying to start a bebate as my knowledge is next to none when it comes to cars.

We recommend this kit for applications up to 500HP, this kit will fit under a stock B5 front bumper (with trimming), and easily clear a B5 S4 front bumper as well.

To ensure a perfect fit, we made custom silicone intercooler hoses to meet stock location turbo installs, aluminum throttle body pipe featuers CNC machined MAP sensor provision.

I was assuming it was a 500 core and not a 600. Hence, the reason I asked about the efficiency of it since the GT30 series can hit 550hp to the crank.

t1demont1
05-30-2008, 06:48 AM
I dunno where you find your info but this is what i see on the site. Features cast in tabs and 2.5" inlets, we recommend this unit for HP levels of 550+ HP.

I understand it is quoted on their site, but how many of them have you seen of them mounted behind a stock bumper? There have been plenty of guys that have posted pics of trying to install a 3" thick core with a stock bumper and every time the bumper is hacked to death.

here is the same FMIC on another site (http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ATP-INT-003&Category_Code=INT) The core dimensions is exactly the same as one of my older setups which I had mounted behind a stock bumper without an AC core.

http://www.centralvalleyspeed.com/photogallery/albums/userpics/10093/Cut-bumper.jpg

So all I am doing is warning people that there is going to be a bit more then a little trimming needed to be done to fit a fmic that big. This is one of the reasons ER doesn't make a Sport fmic kit for the A4, because even though it is much shorter it is still 3" thick and still wont fit behind the bumper with out plenty of cutting.

Here (http://www.034motorsport.com/product_info.php?products_id=2399). This is not the intercooler you are referring to? It was the only larger one I could find.

Thread Jack: And Mike, that was another thing I was pondering over. I notice you always recommend people to go with a different bumper when installing larger FMIC and not hacking the stock one. That is why I asked in the first place. Now I know I will def be getting the S4 bumper (love the simplicity of it) when time comes. Till then, maintance is my concern. Doing control arms, tie rod ends, sway bar links, and bushings next. Everything else on my car is ok, I hope. Then onto engine build. And yes, these things do get pricey. But at least I think I am taking the correct route.

Edit: Ok, I found which one you are talking about. I did not even know they sell sovereign cores. This is the one you got, huh? (http://www.034motorsport.com/product_info.php?products_id=595)

I am getting pretty annoyed seeing this same post over and over. (and this is not directed @ you Poopie)
Scat has been around since 1970's....yes the rods are forged in the far east but the machining is done state side @ there california facility.IE rods (which were actually Stone rods) are not....but they are "cheap" so everyone is buying them up and "they are holding 450whp no problem" .
PSA : Stock AEB rods + ARP studs have been tested to almost 500hp.
Stock ABA's + ARP studs have gone past 550.

Brendan your rods should be in on Friday.
SCAT's have been tested and proven to work.No need to reinvent the wheel

Some people aren't buying them because they are cheap, but because they were the only ones that come in 19mm as a drop in rod for the transverse engines. Just because the are affordable rods doesn't make them bad. I'm just saying that IE rods could be a decent substitute if scats can't be found.

The Scats are plenty burly for our rides. I don't know why anyone would tear down a bottom end just to install fancy rod bolts on stock rods. Might as well replace the rods while you're in there.

Pulling the Turbo on the SPA mani is cake. I started to today and decided to tighten it back down and go for a drive actually, but probably should have just parked it till I do the clutch and Tranny next weekend. I figured now was the best time to do 5,550-6k launches or at least attempt to learn, but ahhh no the tranny was not having it.[>_>] You have official dibs on the LC-1. I love those rims. KTR performance had similar ones on their single big turbo S4 build that ran like 11s or something so that's what I think of when I see your car.

They took her ipod and her messanger bag that she keeps her lunch in lol. It sucks though cause the interior got all fed up by the glass. All the trim around the window is scratched up, the steering wheel has a couple small scratches, and the shifter got a nice scratch on it. So her car has to go back to the body shop next week to get all the shit fixed when it just got out of the shop like 3 weeks ago. The insurance guy was nice though, hes not makin her pay the deductable since it just got out of the shop.

feels awesome, i gave it a bit of gas and the boost guage went up to 15 pounds... wow scared me. Shes got a good 20 miles on her.. Gonna get some exhaust fabbed tomorow.

I think this spring in the wastegate is too stiff becuase it it went to 15 and i think it would have kept truckin...

317ssayzarc
08-03-2008, 08:37 AM
your just running a line from the intake mani to the wg right? shouldnt be more than 15 psi, unless you put too much preload on the wastegate actuator arm

t1demont1
08-03-2008, 02:33 PM
externally gated. I have my boost controlelr hooked up but set it to just run off the wastegate. Damn this thing feels like it wants to pull hard :D Just at part throttle keeping it around 5psi it feels like it just wants to go... so hard not to rip on her. Im pretty sure my crank seal is leaking since i beat the ever living piss out of it trying to get it on.

alright, im off to run some logs, wish me luck. Btw whats an acceptable afr range for wot? I know 14.7 is ideal for idle and crusing but dont know much about afr besides that.

Poopie
08-03-2008, 08:32 PM
what fuel pressure regulator do you have?

t1demont1
08-03-2008, 08:34 PM
the one from 034 http://www.034motorsport.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_76&products_id=174

do i need a vaccum driven fpr? I guess it makes sense to have one since the stock one is vaccum driven, it would probaly keep my afr more in range and smooth my idle...

Poopie
08-03-2008, 08:43 PM
yes it should be a rising rate FPR. I don't know why the 034 one doesn't have a vac port.

t1demont1
08-03-2008, 08:45 PM
Alright, any idea where I can get one since the one at ecs is on back order till the 18th =(

317ssayzarc
08-03-2008, 08:52 PM
that afr is dangerous! it looks like the vac nipple is the adjustment screw on top to me

Poopie
08-03-2008, 08:53 PM
Nope. try and see if you can locate a 3 bar FPR. It doesn't have to be adjustable. The 3 bar should get you close enough. Your base fuel pressure is supposed to rise as you see more boost. Thats what the vac line is for. I'm not sure how the 034 works with out it.

t1demont1
08-03-2008, 08:54 PM
alright ill try to find a 3bar for now.

Poopie

mike-2ptzero
08-03-2008, 08:59 PM
Yeah good eye, it kinda looks like a vac nipple.

The top of the screw is the vac port. This is why he is running lean during boost, once he hooks up the vac line to the top he should better AFR readings during boost.

ill check however i dont htink it is?

It is, just put your vac line over the top and use a zip tie.

lol yay free fix

t1demont1
08-03-2008, 10:57 PM
yeah i hooked it up before i went to my girls house. Idle and cruising afr is a lot smoother and in boost im below 13, like mid 12s down to high 11s... and i popped another damn intercooler pipe off [headbang] good thing that gets taken care of tomorrow. then its all [drive]

However, i think i have a boost leak somewhere else now because my car idles worse than it ever did now heh..

LOL, Brenden. Thanks for reminding me that my build is no done. But we are almost there. All i need is the turbo lines. and fabricate the intake

t1demont1
08-04-2008, 11:04 PM
car gets rich as hell at idle when i let out the clutch, it tries to die a few times and eventually the afr comes back up to the range i want it at idle. Hopefully this will become better as the ecu and maf adapt more. I reset the ecu today because the car seemed to get used to the fuel regulator not being hooked up to vaccum.

t1demont1
08-06-2008, 06:36 PM
My boosting afrs are good. However, im still not impressed with my idle even though it sloooowly seems like its getting better. It like to go from running at a nice afr to rich. Then it will almost die, jump up to lean and fall back to rich. sometimes it will eventually smooth out to a steady nice afr and sometimes it will just die. Ive been getting missifres under part throttle and idle but never under wot? My fuel trims from block 32 vary between (1.5,0) (0.7,0) (0,0) and (2.2,-7) throughout the course of a 20min drive.

Poopie
08-06-2008, 06:45 PM
sounds like an intake leak still. triple quadruple check everything. Go buy some Goop adhesive and seal up the connections on the 4in elbow.

t1demont1
08-06-2008, 07:12 PM
alright ill do that tomorrow. I thought i had them sealed pretty good but i guess not. I think tomorrow im gonna pressure test becasue i hear my tb making some noise, not sure if its a leak even though i dont think it is.

t1demont1
08-17-2008, 10:07 AM
/rant
aghhh i loathe this car right now. In some sort of freak accident the fuckin notch on the cam sprocket broke, causing me to bend every intake vavle and a bunch of exhaust valves. I bought a head off vortex to solve this problem. only to get it and realize that it had a broken cam chain tensioner, no biggie just swap old one onto this head. then i popped the cams off to clean up the head a little and lubricate everything only to realize that this head has 4 fucking bent exhaust valves. I wish i would have sold this car and bought a wrx or something already relatively fast and good handeling instead of trying to make this car do that

pipe7284
