Is it safe?

I'm doing a temporary transfer for work to Mississippi for 8 months and I'm planning to drive my B7, all 2000 miles of it. It should take me about 2 days to get there.

I'm wondering if it's safe to drive on my 235/35/19 wheels. Did my research with co-workers in MS and they said that the I-10 all the way is pretty smooth, and the roads around the area of where I'm going to be working at are pretty decent. Now, what I'm concerned about is the distance of it, it might not be too safe.

Maybe I should slap on my 17" stock wheels for this trip just to be on the safe side, or does anyone have any inputs on long drives with low profile tires?

What do you guys think?

I don't see why it'd be a problem. The biggest pro to switching back to your stockers would be that your 19" tires are probably a lot more expensive, and you wouldn't be putting those miles on the 19's.

I'm not sure if it would be bad for the wheels...but I would do it just for peace of mind, plus it would be cheaper to replace them should something happen. Oh, and It might be a little more comfortable ride. Just my .02

Hmm.. good points. Specially when my Continentals on those stock wheels are still brand new. Should be a good opportunity for me to wear down those tires.

Plus, there's no point showing off my 19's in MS. Girls in MS are fat anyway.

You'll probably get better gas mileage with the 17's as they may be a little lighter...

If you get a flat and have to put on one 17" with three 19"s, doesn't that mess up the quattro?
Say you get a flat half way there and have no choice but to go the rest of the way with the 17", what does it really do, if anything to the quattro system?

For me it would depend on what kind of rubber you have on there... maybe

You could travel in style and show off your wheels to everyone as you're driving, but I wouldn't worry about damaging them assuming you will be looking for road damage/debris.

Or you could do a little work and put the mileage on your oem tires, which are cheap and nobody really cares about. Save some money on not buying 235/35/19's so early... it's kind of a trade off, so I don't see a problem with doing either or.

Just leave them on, it will save you the hassle of swapping. All highway miles won't be much harm on your tires anyway, it's not like you'll be driving hard or turning all that much to wear the tires down. Just make sure you really watch the roads though, since you'll be in unfamiliar territory. Hitting a pothole at 65+mph can bend a 19" wheel easily :(

whats the point of having wheels if youre scared to drive on them? its like putting plastic over your couch because you dont want dust on it. go for it and have fun knowing youre a baller.

i agree. no point putting buying wheels to put them on a pedestal and live in fear of them getting hurt. if you dont have a spare 19 then that would be my only real reasoning for going back to stock.
