I read somewhere that the A4s are a E-DIN or Euro-Din size... is this the same as a double DIN? If so, I'm gonna go for the new Pioneer Z3... I was just reluctant because I didn't think it would fit.

indeed - though you'll not quite 'get it' as much as we do here... especially the "chav" references... i hate it when i here people say "is it?" when u make a statement, or ask a question... ie "i went down to the shop earlier" doesn't warrant "is it?" damn it!! lol

Most Americans wont get it. I've lived in North London (yes im a gunner) and have alot of friends in the UK. It can be annoying when people fuck that up. Nowhere near as annoying as when people screw up black coloquialisms. God i hate that! lol The best are the the french ones imho

As long as you buy the necessary adapters yes. It's a combination of PAC accessories. I don't remember exactly which two off hand.

I can't speak for Darren, but I know a lot of people switched because of the issues that the D3 had with nav. and iPod functionality.

I also know that a lot of people also switched from the w505 to the D3, those reasons I don't know.

If you check out www.avic411.com there are people who have shared their experiences with both.

I'm holding out for the new f90bt, looks to be a pretty sweet unit. Hopefully the the issues the D3 had have been worked out and are non-existent. However, I'm sure that there will be problems with the new voice recognition system and MSN Direct functionality...we will see.

The reason I switched was because I really did not want the Pioneer to begin with. My friend owed me some money and I wanted a W205, so I took the D3 as payment. I really liked the D3 and no issues at all with it, but when the W505 came out I made a call to a friend of mine who is kinda sponsored, and got me the hook up on the 505, Blackbird, and the Ipod interface.

It would still be great to see some pics though. I am actually looking into the avic-f90BT unit too. The 505 has a larger screen though but I'm not quite sure about the portable blackbird. The f90bt seems, to me, like a great solution for the price - I'm a bit sad they didn't offer it in a larger screen - I would have willingly shelled out some more for a larger screen :)

I have noticed that a lot of you guys have gone for the Pioneer Avic D-Series... Is there any particular reason? Would the Z-Series not fit properly or is it just personal preference? Also, I asked about the DIN size earlier, but I guess it is not that difficult if all these guys have done it already.

Darren, could you comment on the Blackbird bluetooth and navigation when docked in the IVA-W505? Any signal issues on the nav? It appears that you cannot change the button illumination - visually, does this make it look out of place. Seems like a solid unit - haven't seen too many complaints. Early adopters of the new Pioneer Avic-Fxxx units are seeing some issues with BT and Ipod sync. Oh, how's the Ipod control/sync. I have a multitude of questions but I'll stop here.

The blackbird is quite expensive - almost for no reason at all apart from the fact that you can dock it.

Before you purchase the AVIC F series be sure to take a look at this site (http://www.avic411.com/), as I was about to do it and was shocked at how bad Pioneer did on this unit, it is a complete doozie, very slow, very buggy, and from what I hear the recent firmware update did little to fix the issues.

I bought the Kenwood DNX8120 for a couple of reasons:
1. Fastest IPOD Controls on the market.
2. Uses Garmin Navigation Software which is best on market.
3. Uses Parrot Bluetooth which is also one of the best on market.
4. Boot time for the unit is 4-8 seconds compared to 30 - 45 secons for the AVIC F series.
5. High Definition DVD Playback with easy handbrake bypass
6. Extremely bright display, more than visible in direct sunlight (F Series barely visible in direct sunlight)
7. XM Integrates with the Garmin software which gives traffic + weather overlays on the mapping software.
8. Skinnable, Customizable
9. Superior multi-monitor and multi audio zone control, which means you can get monitors installed in the headrests if you wish and this unit will control them and will isolate the audio in zones per each...
10. Equalizer controls are out of this world...
11. Rear view camera comes on nearly instantly even before boot process is done.

Now for the CONS:
1. Blue buttons, I use a red skin for the UI though so it offsets the blue...
2. Touch screen for volume, I use the CAM interface it also has buttons on bottom for volume but they are quit tiny but I use them alot more often than touch screen.
3. Screen redraws UI a little slow, not to bad but its not smooth transitions..
4. The UI looks a bit cheezy compared to the F series sexiness...
5. EXPENSIVE as hell, unit is 1300 + 299 Smart XM Module + 49 for IPOD cable + CAM (price varies 30 bucks), etc. you get the picture...
Edit: Fixed typo on price, I paid 1300 not 2300...

Note: I took these pics with flash in dark car, the flash makes it appear that the color of the unit and its border don't match but in fact the color is nearly identical and you can't really notice the difference...

I am not sure I use to do these installs myself but this one required so much work I decided to get a shop to do it. They were a bit expensive but I think the quality of their install shows, I didn't trust Best Buy or any of them... But I can ask my installer if you want to know, we went through 3 CANBUS units before they shipped the right one that worked also, it was a bitch to get the steering controls up and going...I also have a Pioneer camera cause it was slightly smaller, I am still on the fence on where I put the rear view camera I'll post some pics when I get home today and show you where it is located... Also I thought about buying the unit from Amazon like you but the installers charge much much more for them and there is no warranty for the install unless you buy from the installers so its kind of lame. Also if you buy from somewhere make sure they are certified Kenwood dealers, that will guarantee you get the firmware updated version, the initial shipment had a lot of issues that was fixed with a firmware update all certified dealers got, this is the same for most brands. Additionally the Garmin software had an update I installed myself from the Garmin site, fixed some stuff I never noticed but whatever I like to have the latest and greatest.

Pioneer does not test any in dash nav unit before releasing it to the public. My Z2 has the slowest ipod control ever made by man kind.

I think a small child is in the unit copying song titles by hand when i scroll through my list.

D-series was half the price of Z-series, and if you have an ipod the hard drive in the Z-series was unnecessary.

Is the consensus here that the 99-9102 is the best option for a Double Din install?

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120999102/Audi-A4-In-dash-Receiver-Kit.html?tp=861&tab=review
^It got bad reviews in the above.^

And the Scosche kit doesn't look like it does as well being modified for a Double Din Nav unit.
http://www.scosche.com/products/productID/10

Is there a third option?
