A buddy of mine just picked up an 06 M3. We were heading out to a local watering hole the yesterday and he pulled up next to me at a light.
So we decided to have a little fun cuz the road was not that busy and we were off. [drive]
I have to say that up until we hit 95mph, it was pretty much a dead heat. After that he kept pulling away and I gave up. [hail]
But I have to say that I am pretty impressed on how well the A4 did considering that it is bone stock. Being that he paid 35K for his car used and that is what mine cost brand new, this car is definately worth the money. I bet that with a chip, intake and new exhaust on the A4, I might have been able to take him.
I also think he may have been a crappy driver and his shifting may have held him back a little![:D]

That's kinda why I put that little note at the end of my post.
Point of the thread was to state how impressive the car is for the money.
I know that with a good driver behind the wheel of the M3, I would have been sucking on his exhaust alot sooner.

I think the title of the thread should have been, "My friend can't drive worth shit and wasted his money on an M3."

not another one of these "my a4 beat a lambo" thread. an a4 with a chip is a good match for an e36 m3, and nothing more.

how bad of a driver do you have to be? bogging off the line and mis-shifting, i think the m3 would still win.

Well, anythings "possible". [:p]
However, speaking strictly for the 2 cars in question, the M3 "should" win in the hands of a competent driver, but, on the street anythings possible.
Overall, the M3 is well beyond the A4's capabilities in terms of handling and the overall package. The M3 wasn't really a power or speed demon, it's always been an amazing overall all around performance master.
"Fast" isn't just about 0-60 or 1/4 mile, it's about being able to carry speed in and out of the turns so that overall you're faster than even cars with much more power.

LMFAO...i think the M3 started in 2nd gear, then shifted into 4th and then into 6th..otherwise, NO way a STOCK 2.0T is going to come anywhere close to a E46 M3. 35k for a 06 M3 is cheap!? must have high miles or something wrong with it, hence you kept up with him.

Actually he bought it from a semi-retired doctor sho wintered in florida. Has 11k on the odo. Guy just was looking to get rid of it and his investment advisor happened to be looking for a car. Car was soo clean you could eat off the engine.

I need to print a retraction. Just spoke to my buddy and he confirmed the car is actually an '03 and NOT an '06..... Car is still as sick but not as good of a deal as previsouly noted...... Still a good deal for him non the less!

awd has major powertrain loss..especially at higher speeds/top end so you're going to need that much more whp to keep up w/a 2wd car...

I have been holding off on commenting on these threads on how "slow" our A4's are because I have only had mine a couple weeks and I am still getting use to it and won't have it chipped till this Friday, but I don't know if I have a freak car but my car has some serious midrange pull for a stock car. I have owned a couple 400+ hp cars so I'm not a noob. Don't get me wrong the A4 is not that kind of fast but they were not stock. It seems to me that these cars have serious potential to run with cars like the M3 once moded. I guess I might feel different once I get more mods done. I do have a buddy with an M3 so I might have to see for myself on the whole M3 comparo.

My Aunt has an M3 that's gotta be about 7-8 years old. If the 2006 M3's are similar, than it's very, very fast. Even from a dead start. I think it was a case of a bad driver, b/c like many have said, he should've smoked you. However, once you get chipped, it will make a closer race, but the M3 will still win. Or...maybe he wasn't in sport mode. The throttle response and handling of the car is completely different in sport and stock mode on the M3. In stock mode you're like why is this car so expensive...In sport mode, you really get to see what kind of beast you have.

Bone stock would be pretty hard to believe, but with the right mods on the A4, it should be close. I deal with the E46 M3's on the track all day long. With my mods and 100oct gas they can't pass me, but if i'm on the rear of them, I can't gain an inch either. I was pretty dead even against a chipped M3 last year on the main straight at Thunderhill, and against one a couple of weeks ago at Laguna

Interesting. As another reference, I autocrossed my car yesterday for the first time and was impressed with my times for a 3,600 pig. I've only had the car for three weeks and this is my very first turbo. With APR93, exhaust and the all-season Falken Ziex ZE912's (M+S, 360 tread wear) that my car came with on dry, mid-60 degree weather, my best time was high 48s.
Two of the guys from my club with similar skill level have M3s. One is an E36 running r-comps that ran high 45s and the other is an E46 with Falken 615s that ran mid 46s, IIRC. I figure once I put 615s and sways on my car and have more experience driving the turbo I should be able to drop between 1.5 and 2 seconds, putting me just a hair above the range of the M3s, and that's without rain!
