View Full Version : FEELER. For JHM "solid" short throw shifter for A5 and S5

Hey guys. I am a manufacturer of the best short throw shifter on the market for B5-B6-B7 A4s, S4s and RS4s. I have already been called by some S5 owners about making a shifter so I wanted to guage the interest in this.

I also am looking for a volunteer close enough to me to help with R&D and build this shifter. I am 1 hour south of Sacramento and 80 minutes East of San Francisco. So anyone from those locations should be able to work with me on this.

Info on what my shifter design is all about for those who don't know. From what I can tell from ETKA diagrams the design is about 70% the same so the R&D will be a little longer to finish vs. my previous models. If we could get the car for about 2 weeks we would have a shifter done at no charge to the volunteer.

Click Here to see the B6/B7 S4 and RS4 unit so you have a better idea on how much better our shifters are. (http://www.jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_56_61_105&products_id=4)

A picture to show you how it stands out.

Looks like there are less of these on the road than I thought so far.

Anyone?

Looks like a nice product. My S5 is the first manual car I've owned, but I've driven others. As most S5 owners would conclude, the throw is shorter than most in stock form, and is pretty solid for now, compared to many other stock cars.

Also, there aren't too many of us that are turning our brand new 5's into track cars... yet. And you are right, there aren't many of us out there, and then take like a tiny percent of that, and thats how many of us are in the forums. =)

From what I have seen in the ETKA parts drawings it definitely looks like a little tighter design than all the other models. You are correct, on a new car the slop isn't there yet. My shifter stands out more and more as the cars age, especially since it is overbuilt and won't show the wear that the oem plastic and rubber will show. In time more people will get the mod bug as more hit the streets.

Cool man. I just need to find a local guy who wants to help by supplying the car. Should only take a week or two to build.

From what I can see from the ETKA drawings they look like they are both using the same shifter. Once I build one for either a A5 or S5 I will confirm fitment as soon as possible. In the past the A4s and S4s as an example were 95% the same and only one part is different between them. From what I have seen with all the Audi shifters I have made, Audi keeps stuff quite similar.

So does anyone with one yet live in the Sacramento, Central Valley, or Bay Area with one? Need to get my hands on one to get started.

If you know of anyone please spread the word.

I'm definitely interested. I just picked my S5 up in Berkeley, CA this past weekend, but the car is now back in Texas. That doesn't help you on R&D.

Keep us posted. I'm ready for shorter throws.

If you need an S5 guinea pig.

Feel free to email me at [email protected] so we can get together and I can look into building a shifter for your car.

Or call me direct on my cell at 209-482-2778

I am out in the valley, but do go into the San Ramon area every couple weeks. So maybe the first meeting I can just spend 30 minutes or so pulling the shifter only partially out and getting some measurements just to see what I am getting myself into. [:D]

Looking forward to you contacting me.

Thanks

Maybe try the A4 B8 forum? Dunno how similar the shifters are, but the interiors of the cars are damn near identical, so perhaps the shifters are as well.

If you offer one for the A4 B8, I may be interested.

Hey guys we tried ordering shifter boxes to begin R&D. We ran into 2 things.

1 there is a vin split for the shifter boxes in March of 08 (build date) and Audi since they are getting them from Germany will not sell me the parts unless I have VIN numbers.

So I need the following

1. I need someone to PM me with their VIN number on a car with a build date before March of 2008.

2. I need someone to PM me with their VIN number on a car with a build date after March of 2008.

The build date should be on the vin plate on the drivers side near the lower sill plate near the rear of the door opening

This way I can get both shifter assemblies to compare and start R&D on a shifter for your cars.

Thanks.

Just chiming in to give props to JHM. Love my B7 SS and hope that the folks at JHM are diligently working on a B8 application! It better be done by the time my B8 S4 arrives in Sept! [:p]

Hey A5 guys,

Throwing my 2 cents out there:

I'm a B5 S4 owner and a user of JHM's Solid Short Throw on my 6spd for the last 1.5-2years. My buddy has the same B5 as me, but opted for the Neuspeed short shifter (before Jason had the Solid product out). I have driven both cars and there is NO question which shifter is better. My buddy also comments on how much better my car shifts than his. You will not be disappointed.

Bump for JHM. And you will not have any complaints going for this mod.

We got one of the new OEM shifters in. It is different but definitely doable. Working on figuring out the best way to implement our "solid" design while keeping the quality up and the cost to our customers down.

I will keep you posted with updates as we progress. We have a lot going on this summer so worst case we can attack it full force this winter if we don't get a lot of progress soon.

We will soon.

HEY everyone. We need a local S5 or A5 to come down for some measurements of the box that the shifter goes into so we can determine how much reduction we can get. We have the shifter (like pulling teeth and some are not available yet) but the box has no replacement PN yet.

So contact us @ [email protected] if you are in the Sacramento or San Francisco area, we are about 60 to 90 minutes away from both.

Updates?

jaybquick@JHM

Updates?

We now have a guy who is willing to help us test fit in a B8 A4 (same as A5 pn wise). So we aquired some more of the new OEM units before and after the split in march of 08. They seem to be all the same except the part numbers. The B8 S5 and the B8 A4/S5 visually appear the same, we need to sit down and go over both with a micrometer and see if there are any differences.

So we will hopefully move forward into producing a new prototype in the coming months. We have several other projects in line in front of this.

Once complete we will need to confirm fitment on all 4 different PNs that Audi has for the B8 A5/S5/A4. Then we can go into production.

If all goes well hopefully by years end. We can definitely build it for sure, just need to get to it.

Updates?

We have everything drawn up and all the processes and tooling figured out. We just need to find the time to knock it out. Other projects keep getting in the way It seems like the more of these cars that hit the street the more inquiries we get which will get us moving quicker.

thanks and sorry for the delay.

We should get one on a car in the next month or so. We have all 4 of the different shifter assemblies here for the A4, A5, S4 and S5. There was a split in 08. So we have it all designed and figured out for optimal fitment. Next step is on car testing.

Thanks for the interest and this definitely coming soon.

The stock shifter in the A5 is clunky. Will this shifter smooth out the shifts? Please talk about your testing expereince with that.

Note that “cheaper” aluminum designs can’t be bent to replicate the factory bend for ergonomics. They would be weakend
