Alright guys, this time I'm pretty lost as to whats going on. Did a hard 1st gear pull and switched hard, got to the light and the car started sounding like a wrx. Got the car towed home, vag'd it and got
16396 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Advance Setpoint not Reached (Over-Retarded)
P0012 - 35-00 - -
17544 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean
P1136 - 35-00 - -
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 35-00 - -
16687 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0303 - 35-00 - -
16688 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0304 - 35-00 - -
16686 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0302 - 35-00 - -
16685 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0301 - 35-00 - -
for about a month now, the car would misfire at idle and just go away within seconds, I just kept assuming it was a bad coilpack since this is like my 3rd set already. But after pulling the codes it doesn't look like it. at first I thought it was the cam tensioner but I can't tell since theres no ticking this time and the guides aren't broken. Checked for vacume leaks and I don't see any major ones, whats weird is that I sometimes hear like a rattling metal sound sporatically just for a second and it goes away. I really need help guys I'm really lost this time.

hrmmm...idunno if its a coincidence, but when I pulled the valve cover off and tried to compress the tensioner, it was tight and had almost no play, which matches exactly what that link says, but when I called VWspecialties which is suppose to be one of the best in the area, I told the guy their Don i think his name, that it was tight and he said it should be, he also said it wouldn't cause misfires in all cylinders.

Obviously all your P030x codes are for misfires, I know you said you replaced the coils, have you checked and regapped your plugs?
As far as the Camshaft position code, I don't know what to tell you. Unless for some reason your intake cam jumped a tooth, but that shouldn't be able to happen if your tensioner is still in good condition. AFAIK there's supposed to be 16 links between the two cam timing marks, might be a good idea to check that. I've seen guys get a tooth off on a timing belt and not notice it while driving, it'll come back in a day or two w/ codes for misfires on that bank.

The misfire at idle may be a timing issue as well. The ECU can compensate by retarding timing in some cases to cancel the misfire.
Is it misfiring at higher RPM's or just at idle? Boost sensitive, anything else more specific.

You're running the correct fuel right? No offense, but I've seen it happen.

Good luck

the chain timing is on spot, the timing belt I havent checked yet, I don't think it could be off since its been good for 45k miles. I havent checked gaps yet I'll check it tomorrow as well as the cam position sensor. Of course I only use 91 mobile 1

You've got a 91 oct file on a GTRS?
I thought it would've been a 93 oct file.

As far as checking the cam pos sensor, it should be a hall effect like mine, it's not real easy to diag w/ a logic probe or a Digital Multimeter. Make sure you don't start probing wires with an analog meter. Your ECU will never forgive you, just an FYI, if you didn't already know.

I think I still have the wiring diagram around for the cam pos sensor if you need it. There should be three wires, 5V ref, ECU feed, and Ground. IIRC the ECU feed/sense wire is the middle wire, but don't quote me on that.

check your timing belt. set the rotating assembly to tdc and see where your cam sprocket is. the grooves should match.

Is that a bad thing. Jk i love WRX's.

I would get that bitch at TDC like poopie said. I have seen the teeth jump before on my friends 1.8t. Verify that, then start messing with the plugs and such.

Your misfires are probably from bad plugs. I just changed mine out b/c i was having misfire problems as well. Also the MAF sensor went out in my car. (Like they always do!) FREAKIN GT28RS [headbang][headbang][headbang][headbang][headbang][headbang]

I fuel with the highest fuel grade available in the area, 1hota4 but the cars running real real bad, not just random misfires, its misfiring consistantly, i'll check the timing tomorrow as well as the plugs

Mine is at the shop right now b/c i blew a MAF sensor and come to find out my car was misfiring like hell. He ran the car on his computer. So he pulled my plugs and replaced them with new ones and bam! No more missfires...

how do you run a car on a computer? wouldnt that break the computer?

He probably means VAG-COM'd and got misfire codes/counts.
