I was waiting for the 5,000 mile oil change on my S5 when a bored sales guy asked if I wanted to take out a new A5 to compare it to my S5. Who was I to say "No?"

In any event, I drove an A5 S-line and I was really impressed with the car and it's acceleration in particular. To me at least there was not any serious drop-off in 0-60 acceleration. When I mentioned this to the sales guy who was riding shotgun he stated that it's probably due to the A5 weighing less than the S5. I know that if you directly measured an S5 vs. an A5 0-60 the S5 would be a bit faster. However, to me at least there's not an appreciable or very noticeable drop-off when going to an A5. Overall, the A5 is an impressive and seriously fast car.

the S5 IS significantly faster...times are around 4.7-5.0 0-60 time. Which makes it about 1 second faster. Still though, the A5 is around 5.8sec, which is very quick. But for another 10k, S5 is WORTH the upgrade.

Ive had the luxury of driving both, and the difference is still quite noticeable with the S5. The A5 is no slouch though, and when you get on it from a dead start you still feel a very significant push as you are forced back into the seat. But with the S5, it can be downright scary if you arent really prepared for it.

I'll be able to give a more extensive review in a few weeks when I take ownership of my S5 - for now, it's only been through test drives. But the parental unit now owns an A5 and Im giving it a fuller test this weekend.

i took a 3.2 a5 on the free way from 65-110 with him pushing down the gas before a little before me
.. was def pulling away.. i wouldnt get the a5 unless they had good mods for the turbo or i got the s5 which just looks amazing..3.2 isnt worth it as a 3.2 a4 isnt either IMO

and trust me the S5 is a lot faster. I couldn't wait for the S5 and don't mind the better gas mileage they also had a loaded black/black A5 s-line on the lot righ then. Looks awesome, but I would take the V8 for the extra cash any day if could have found one. Hopefully roll it into an RS next. Oh well.

OK, let me put it this way. If you're trying to decide between an A5 vs. S5, acceleration and speed should NOT be a determining factor. The A5 at 265 hp. with the lesser weight factor is still very quick. I was out on the expressway and always had more power than I needed and this is coming from a guy who has been driving an S5 since late November. I was amazed. I would like to see someone get and independent assessment of the A5 on a dyno to see what the hp really is.

Also, with gas approaching $4/gallon, a V6 makes even more sense than ever.

My thoughts are this: doesnt really matter too much about the speed part of the equation. With the S5 being only about 8k more when both are optioned, its sorta a financial no brainer to get the s5. Seats, mirrors, exclusivity, and sound of that v8 are plenty reasons.

Now if they had a turbo or tdi instead of the plain jane v6, maybe we have a debate on our hands...

I wish they made a A5 2.0T Quattro with a 6 speed. With simple mods like exhaust, intake, chip, FSI Pump, and test pipe that would put it about 300hp/350lbtq and weight about 500lbs less than an S5.

Exactly, once again like with the TT us manual lovers are going to have to settle for the V6. [down]
