dude...
The annoying threads are when some faceless teenager posts his/her "new" car, which turns out to be a 97 A4 in silver with no mods and 150,000 miles. Yeah, that's great, you saved my neck muscles from having to look out the window and see the exact same thing.
Threads like this are great. You show off some awesome mods and how much hard work you put into it. Well done.

are you pulling out the motor? I would put the vavle cover back on so you don't drop anything in the head.

03-25-2008, 03:46 PM
POOPIE and 317SSAYZARC I will definately pm you guys if i encounter any problems. thanks for your time and service.
The motor is coming off, the problem is that i wont be using an engine hoist/jack, so i hve to take the head off and then with the help of a frind tke the block out and put it on a stand to swap the rods, bearings.
DJWIMBO--yes that is ATP 3" catdelete, motor mounts including snub ,and tranny mounts will be changed.
And i will post more pics of how everything is coming apart and back together. the entire procedure will be shown.

that block is still heavy as shit. I think 2 people could do it, but its such a pain in the ass. You can't go to a local rental place and rent one? Its like $50 at a place near me. Pulling out the motor isn't bad, but a hoist is almost required to stab the motor back in.

Harbor Freight sells engine stands for like $50. I would highly recommend getting one.
Also, some recommended/required tools:
12-point Metrics (for ARP rod bolts)
Torque Wrench
VAG 1.8t Head Bolt Socket
As for advice, I've found that the easiest thing to do is pull the transmission with the motor. Unbolt the shift rods from the shift lever inside the car, unbolt the axles, disconnect the driveshaft, and pull engine and tranny as one (unbolt all motor/transmission mounts as well, of course).
Poopie
03-25-2008, 10:25 PM
how is that easier then just undoing the bell housing bolts? i used a harbor freight engine stand and it worked great. My friend let me borrow his AC Delco hoist.
because getting the inputshaft and all the bolts to line up with the tranny is a royal pain in the ass whne you try to put it back in. it not impossible but if you have an engine lift might as well pull the tranny with it its only a few more bolts.

yea getting the engine out is the easy part, its lining it up and putting it back in that is a pain in the ass. you definitely are going to want to buy a cheap engine hoist. plan on getting a buddy to help you put it back in.
things you may have forgot.
-rvt sealent for the oilpan
-more coolent
-oil, a couple oil filters
-plastigauge
-rent/buy a block hone
also are you stripping the block? i dont see any main bearings and what not so im assumingyour leaving the crank in. Plan on spending alot of time cleaning up the head/block and setting the ring gap. other then that its pretty easy and quick. gook luck

the main reason why the motor is coming off is becasue i have to get the crank out to replace the main bearings. If it was just the rods, there is no need to take the motor out. I am going to harbor fright to see the prices they got on the engine hoist.

03-26-2008, 09:36 AM
nice, you taking the block somewhere to get hot tanked and honed then? i love the look of a freshly painted and honed block, makes he wish i had money and time to build a real engine.
side note, is that a new DMFW or is that a LWFW. if its a new stock return it. i spend 500 on a new DMFW and its the worst money i think i have spent on the car to date. get a LWFW in the 12-15 lb range

you lucky bastard. took me and my friend about 45 mins and alot of cursing. the part that was hard is that it sits on angle with the right side up about 20 degrees which is not how the engine wanted to hang.

you have to get that chain extension that has the angle adjustment =)

Did you drop your subframe? It was the biggest pain in the ass getting the oil pan bell housing bolts off and on. Not to mention, why fight with the tranny in the car to get it to line up properly with the engine? You might have gotten lucky the one time you did it, but experience has shown, for me anyway, that it's just easier overall to pull the tranny and engine as one.
how did you guys hook up the engine hoist to the engine?
We pulled the head off and hand tightened some head bolts with the chains around them and lifted the motor that way. The hole by the engine code on the head can also be used to hoist the motor. I believe we've also hoisted the engine by the motor mount brackets.
Poopie
03-26-2008, 05:56 PM
did not drop the sub frame. I've done a bunch if clutch jobs so i know my way around the bell housing. Its definitely easier to remove the bell housing bolts compart to 3 sets of drive shaft axles, shift linkage, and mounts. For the hois, use the two holes on the head. there is a hole where the fuel lines are clipped into this plastic piece and one hear the engine code.

Man I really want to do a engine build. Depending on how much cash I got going for me this summer I might do it before I put a bigger turbo on. My biggest problem is not having the tools or a full knowledge of how to build a engine. Thats why poopie and bassed live close by :)

make sure you clean the grooves out on those pistons... how many miles on those?
and btw, my prefered method of cleaning pistons is to let them sit in a stripping solution like e-z strip for a bit then use some #0000 steel wool to clean em up... then a razor blade for the ring grooves... just my .02 [up]

It might cause premature wear on the bearings. That ARP stuff that came with the rods is for the bolts.

04-03-2008, 01:39 PM
whats wrong with the ARP assembly lube?
that lube is for stretching the bolts correctly, not for bearing lubrication... the bearing lube isnt a grease, its more like a gear lube... you can tell ones smoother by rubbing it in your fingers, its all up to you but id suggest against it... i did the same thing you did to an engine when i was in engines class in school, my teacher said no way, and told me to compare the two to see the difference, i did but never asked him why...

pull the oil filter flange off by taking the 3 allen bolts out, then look at the back of the flange (the side that mates to the block), there will be one hole that has threads for that peice to go into, and lastly you need to tighten it by the triple square side

i think its an anti drain back valve... its a one way valve that keeps the oil in the block after shut down instead of allowing it to drain out... this allows for quicker oil pressure buildup on startup [up]

Well, remember the laser red 99 A4 i bought? It had bent valves, so the head i had on the black a4 i put on the red a4 to get it running since my car is sitting in pieces in the garage. I took the other head to get the valves replaced and i was told that it was a $1000 job. 8 exchaust valves bent, 8 intake valves bent, on of the cams is damaged and need a knew one, all seal on the valves need to be replaced, so i would rather buy another head and pay half that price.

How the hell did a cam get damaged?
If you are going BAT. I would just spend the money to have that head rebuilt.
Buy a set of aftermarket, UPGRADED valves like supertech for $450-500 + springs $200 + labor $400.
It might cost you $1200 - $1500, but at least you will be able to safely rev it and have a 100% working head (All valves sealing properly, new valve guides, and new valve seals) than buying a used head with 100K on it for a performance build.

i have a AEB head that does run but the webbing inbetween 2 of the exhust valves on cylinder 2 has been chipped off from when i broke a valve i had everything replaced but the cylinder wouldnt hold high enough PSI
anyways its a complete head with everything in it(cams, chain tensioner, valves, lifters) that you could use for replacement parts instead of buying everyhting new
anyone got any use for the parts??

07-11-2008, 06:46 AM
yeah, i just had thi problem too. If I buy your rims, I could actually give you a hand in putting the cams back on, but here:
Basically, theres tdc marks on the rear of the cams, these marks must be 16 teeth apart, then the caps by the sprockets on the cams have an arrow on them. This arrow must line up with the tdc marks on the cam. the caps must have the numbers facing toward the intake side of the head. Tighten caps #2&4 on the cams, then move on to the rest. and I almost forgot, oil everything, put oil on the cam, on the caps, on everything. Or else youll be in for a nice dry start

The flywheel only mounts in one way. If you look at the flywheel pic, in the 6 and 7 oclock position there are two holes that are closer together then the rest. Use this as a reference when bolting up the flywheel.

Doesn't matter. Just make sure when you start installing the clutch bolts that you don't tighten one at a time, you want to tighten each one a little at a time so the pressure plate goes down evenly till it touches the flywheel.
BTW when you stacked the clutch/pressure plate on the flywheel did the dowels go into the hole or did they sit just below the hole and which flywheel is that?
pipe7284
07-27-2008, 10:59 PM
they sit below the hole and the went into the hole as the pressure palte was being tightened.
the flywheel i purchased from bitterchild, it is a 18 lbs steel single mass flywheel. i really dont remember any more specs of the item. I erased the message that bitterchiled sent me with the info of this flywheel.

You need the security torx to remove the two screws / bolts holding in the sensor, or just do like I did and carefully remove them with a vice grip.

A 4" to 3" 90 deg or cobra hose.

Do you already have the AEM wide band? If not you might want to look at getting a kit from Innovate or the Zen. Both of those companies have products that allow for logging. You could also try finding someone that is selling a LM1 setup, if you get one I have the RPM cable that I am no longer using.

The gauge itself retails for $229. The full kit with that gauge which includes the sensor and LC1 goes for $399. So I dont think anyone is going to be selling it for $250 shipped, maybe $350.
I dont think that kit will record RPM though.

Do you mean the gauge or just the wide band sensor the AEM uses?
Plenty of shops still carry the LM1, I know Scott of USRT still had them during Waterfest. The problem is that the LM1 is no longer produced since Innovate replaced it with the new LM2. You might be able to find some used LM1's on Ebay.

ok, already installed the wideband, noe i nee to figure out hoe i install my greddy EBC with an external wastegate and still with the N75 valve. a diagram would be helpfull but if you can explain in detail, thanks
If you are going EBC just ditch the N75. Leave the N75 harness plugged in and wire tie it somewhere out of the way.
You cant use both the N75 and EBC to control boost if that is what you are talking about. They just do it 2 different ways.
EBC uses pressure on both sides to keep the wg closed, then cuts the pressure off in the hose that goes to the top of the wg causing the pressure in the line to the side of the wg to pop it open. The N75 and MBC keep the pressure from going to the WG, then sends the pressure to open the wg once the pressure hits a set point.
Greddy EBC install
Pressure hose to a Y splitter, one end goes to the side of the wg and the other to the "in" (NC) side of the EBC step motor. The "out" (COM) side of the EBC step motor goes to the top of the wg.
For a internal wg actutor you end up using the NO port instead of the NC.
