I'm going to be out running some errands and I can check for replies on my cell phone, so if anyone can verify if 10w40 isn't too thick for a 30v 2.8, i'll pick some up at advanced auto parts. they don't carry 5w40, which i believe is more preferred, and the 0w40 that i'm running now, which they carry, seems to run better when it's not up to temp.

as i understand, 0w40 is more of a winter oil since it warms up a little quicker and 5w40 or 10w40 would be more appropriate for warmer temperatures?

basically, can i use 10w40, should i, or not.

I use 15/40 in the winter. absolutely no related problems. 10/40 should be fine

Use 0W40 if you can find it. That is what the local dealer uses. The owner's manual wants you to use 0W30, but that doesn't exist.

yeah i would get as close to the 0/40 as you can as you lot actually get proper cold winters and the oil could make the difference in you starting the car or not. Over here i recon i could run grease and it would still be liquid enough to start.

If anyone has a hard time looking for Mobil 1 in 0w40, check out your local Mercedes dealership...I work at one, and we use Mobil 1 (0w40) in all the AMG cars.[wrench]

i can get 0w40 all day from most autozones around here. mobil 1 doesn't make a 5w40 i guess, so i'm running 10w40 for summer.

Why 10W40? Your engine is designed for 0W30, so the best bet is to get 0W40. If you notice on your dash gauge, the oil temp never gets very high unless you race.

yah oil temp doesn't go above 1/4 usually. i'll prolly go back to 0w40 after this change. i was trying to see if it would run any different/better is all.

Believe it or not, Mobil 1 does make a 5w40, check your local Mercedes stealership for that also...5w40 is used on the regular Benz's 98+, and the 0w40 is used for the AMG engines.[wrench]

Mobil 1 10W40 HM has a cold pour point of -39 degrees Celsius, I am sure it will be fine; however, the Mobil 1 10W30 HM meets ACEA A3 and has a pour point of -54 degrees Celsius, so that might also be a good choice.

Another option to consider is the Castrol Syntec 0W30, it meets VW502 and ACEA A3 and is an excellent oil. However, it is only available at Autozone. Also, make sure it says "Made in Germany" on the bottle.

Im a little confused, the local Wal-mart has 5 qt jugs and 1 qt bottles of 0w 30 for $26 dollars and $6.

So I guess thats just odd.
