Difficulty polishing chrome

I spent a little time today trying to clean up some trouble spots on my car and ran into a bit of difficulty. The chrome trim around the windows, under trunk, etc, really didn't want to get clean using a little elbow grease. I went out and purchased some Mothers Chrome Polish, but even that didn't really seam to help. The stains almost appear to be calcium deposits, but try as I may, I can't seem to get them off. I have attached pictures, any suggestions are welcomed.

again, i would have to suggest eagle ones never dull

Is it plastic or actual chrome? I've found that not much can be done with plastic, as opposed to actual chrome.

im pretty sure its real aluminum trim
