Ok, I know this topic has been discussed before, but what can I do to increase my mpg? I have owned my car for maybe 4 months now and just yesterday took my first real road trip. Well, sad to say on highway miles I was only getting 20.2 mpg.[confused]. What are factors and things I could do to increase my mpg? For specs, I am running on 16" Dunlop wintersports but did not check tire pressure before going. Do not know the dimmensions though. I know the winter does not help much, but what else could I do? Just tire pressure check and replace fuel filter? There has to be something else. I saw thread with people getting 30mpg.

20.2 is highway.

Oh but on funny note, I was taking my mother to the airport. So, driving there I would do maybe 80 tops. On way back, I am cruising at maybe 90 (speed limit is 65 and I live in NY. fast drivers is a commodity). I am maybe 30 miles from home and I look in my rear view mirror and I see this car coming up flying. None the less, it was a cop. I am thinking this guy is going to pull me over. So, I get into slow lane after dropping down to maybe 75 (65 limit). Next thing you know, this cop passes me going like 100-110 mph(no lights). Hahahahaha.

There's a state trooper that does that all the time in MA on a stretch of highway near me. First time I saw him, he was coming up behind me fast.. it was dark/night so I didn't know it was a cop until he passed me doing at least 90mph. I was surprised he didn't pull me over. I saw him a few times more after that.. he's always on that same stretch of road, at about the same time of night, doing 90mph.

You got off topic first! :)

well for better gas mileage stay around 3k rpm or 60mph..

make sure your air filter is clean..and if your thermostat is bad then it can make your car think its cold all the time and run more rich...

i tried some fuel injector cleaner made by redline that i picked up at a local checker auto, (heard good things about it on other forums) i drove the poop out of my car and was actually getting better mileage than before... that is, until my clutch hydraulic line decided to burst...

Now its getting no miles to the gallon...

about the tstat...has anyone had much luck r&r it on a 2.8 without pulling the everything apart? my car never gets fully to temp and drops down low a bit sometimes too

ive had many a cop fly past me at 100+, if youd had a 380hp rwd cruiser and nobody was gonna pull you over, wouldnt you?

3k is like 80mph on my b5 in 5th gear :|..hmm I get around 27-29 mpg mixed driving, mods are in sig. I get about 350-380 miles to the tank

3k is 68 with a 1.8t transmission. 80 is 3500 rpm.

The biggest mileage killer is rolling resistance. Set your tire pressure at 36 all around and make sure your alignment is good - especially the toe settings.

your alignment is a HUGE factor in gas mileage, most people think air filter, or fuel filter, i'd change em' too, can't hurt .But check your alignment, Toe especially, if your tires are even slightly with the edges faces outwards like this \ / your gas mileage will suffer drastically, camber / \ on the other hand is not as bad, but you still want it in spec.

Stay out of boost, and I can guarantee that your gas will go up.

X2

The obvious stuff is always good, air filter, clean oil, tire pressure, etc, etc.
Other important stuff, don't speed. I average ~24.9-25mpg in my 160K 1.8T averaging 70-77mph when I go home, 240 miles. I'm not sure how accurate my tach is, but 3500rpm is ~77mph for me, 3K rpm is around the posted speed limit here in OH. I'm from MI, we speed in MI, so I speed. Not a good idea.

I usually get 300-330 miles to the fill up, but I do not and will not run 'er dry. That's hell on pumps. I've gone as far as ~360 miles, immediately after it got chipped. [:D]
Other than that, my only recommendation is to buy a diesel Jetta and swap in the Euro 5th gear. 31mpg towing a trailer, and 50mpg otherwise FTW!

Tires matter too. I did an 860 trip to Alabama and averaged 34 down and over 32 back on skinny all season tires. I did the same trip a few weeks later with 235/45-17 Pilot Sports and got 26-27. This is another example of rolling resistance. The slight toe in didn't bother the hard all seasons at all but the pilot sports tramlined and it was a big difference in feel.

Are you kidding?!?!!? Holy crap! Whats the deal with the euro 5th gear, really long gearing? How much would this plan cost?
