Today i got a hell of a deal on a 98 2.8q with just 122,000 miles on it. It had a weird noise coming from the front (kinda sounded like a fan hitting something) but i didnt think the noise was anything major cause when you revved the car the noise didnt accelerate with it. And it wasnt a knock or anything, more like a clicking. After hearing the noise more and more, i started to think the noise was the tensioners and that maybe the car was on the original timing belt (even at 122,000 miles) Could this be possible?? The guy I ended up selling the car too said he owned an a4 2.8 before that had 125,000 miles and was on the original t belt. I miss the car, and the guy said I can buy it back for exactly what i paid but i only have till tomorrow. I want to, but im kinda nervous about the belt tensioner situation. The sepentine belt has a line in the middle of it, does anyone think its possible to be on the original tbelt at 122,000 miles?? One last thing, i got the car for $3,700 cash, (got the guy down from $4,800) sold to my friend for $3,800 because i didint want to be stuck with a car that had problems. Now I miss it, should I go get it, or find another one. The car was cleeeeeaaaan. I cant post pics, will someone put them up for me please??

wtf? lol

It's not unheard of to be on the original timing belt at that many miles, but it's not common at all. If it was making noises and shit, and you already made $100 off the deal, I'd quit while you're ahead honestly and look for a 1.8t.

ok ok, so youre saying move on and find another one.... thats usually how i am, i dont really fall in love with cars (just a couple) and thats why i got rid of it because i wasnt that attached to the car. But now that its gone, i kinda miss the car. Its weird and i dont mean to come off mushy and shit, its just weird. But maybe youre right, let my buddy deal with the problems and find another one. They are hard to find, (in good condition) this one was unmolested and had only two owners.

I had my timing belt tensioner and belt replaced last year for about $350 including parts and labor. It's not that big of a deal really.

9k got me one with 126,000 miles, its a 98 1.8tqm... apr stage 3, spec stage 3 clutch, coilovers, turbo back and tons of other performance shit... reiger rs4 bumper, s4 sides and rear, and basically flawless paint... flawless interoir besides a small rip in the drivers seat...

if you knew me, you would know how picky i am about cars... and im also a detailer and mechanic sooo...

let it go and get a 1.8tqm [up]

At that price it was a good deal whatever. If you bought it and stuck a TB kit on it, you would still be on to a winner cost wise.

Lee, what you need to do is get a 1.8T for a cheap price (which you already know where to find them). 1.8t are easer to work on and parts are easer to find as well since the 1.8 has a much larger market.

Buy it back! Buy the timing belt parts from me and rest assured that you got a great deal! Honestly, all you need is the belt and other pulley and you will be set! You say the noise didn't increase when revving the engine... If you can get a video or at least an area of where the noise is comming from...

Scoop my car if you can afford it [:)]

Otherwise, the 2.8's are pretty solid

1st good decision was to sell it for a profit...
1st bad decision buying a 2.8 in te first place... LOL
