Ok, I'm trying to get a little more power out of the 1.8t and was wondering what you guys think about the garrett T3/T04E 57 trim .63 a/r turbo. It's being sold privately and is brand new. The guy selling it is offering me a pretty good deal on it. Sure, it's not a ballbearing turbo but I'm paying half as much for the 57trim than I would for a ballbearing. It is externally gated so if I get it I'd go with a 38mm Tial.
I'm looking for some input from you guys. Is this turbo a good idea? How much hp gain should I be expecting?
I got a 98 1.8tmq
Thanks[az]

Good 350-400whp turbo right there.I made 307whp with that turbo on an 8V so I am pretty sure you can squeeze more out of it.Turbos do not need to be ball bearing...the K03 isnt ;).Just that people go with what sounds cool...

Good luck.

The 57 trim isn't a good match for a 1.8T as it tends to surge and definatly not ball bearing, the longer it takes for you to spool it the better so it doesnt spool to the left side of the surge line.

50 trim is a much better choice of a turbo, it's considered as a performance T series. [up]

you have to consider what you want out of the turbo. have you ever been in a 57 trim A4? have you ever been in a 50 trim a4? I ran a 50 trim. It pulled like a mofo. don't expect k03 response though, we're talking full boost by 4k at the earliest.
a 50 trim will satisfy most people.

I ran a 57 trim for a while, it surged a lot, and I hated it. I would go for the 50 trim as well if I did it over again.

k03 response? Rofl, I can't even tell when it kicks in. It's that weak... A 50 trim will kick in sooner obviously but will it be able to achieve as much hp as the 57 trim?

The 57 trim turbo is good for low-boost, high flow applications. If you compare the compressor maps, you'll see that the 50 trim is much better suited to the 1.8t. It will probably have the potential to make more power as well, seeing how it won't surge. My 57 trim surged at anything over 19psi.

The dotted line on the left is called the surge line. The vertical numbers represent pressure (boost), the horizontal represents airflow.
Basically on this map of the 57 trim if you spool too fast with not enough airflow, you'll be to the left of the surge line. This causes the compressor wheel to stall, and boost boost bounces back and forth between the turbo and the engine. It's very harmful to the turbo, and doesn't feel good when driving. The boost gauge will fluctuate rapidly.
That's the best I can explain it, hope that helps.

Compared with the 50 trim map, the 50 trim has a much nicer surge limit, and is more efficient at higher boost levels:

^^ no that explains it very well, thanks...
