WELLLL, about a week ago I hit a MONSTER pothole (which run rampant in NJ). I didn't even see it. Anyway, my tire slowly went flat within five minutes so I pulled over and changed it.

Now to the point.

I purchased a new Pirelli P6 All-Seasons Tire from TireRack.com and went to go have it mounted at an STS Tire (local place). The sign above the desk says "Standard Tire Mount" -$9.00.

Pick up the tire late in the day; $34.00 total. I'm creeped out. I ask a few questions without sounding rude. He says that it was an aluminum rim and a low profile tire, which runs $13 for mount and $13 dismount of the flat tire. I tell him it is a stock wheel set-up and thats ridiculous.

Were they just looking for a few bucks or is this a legitimate claim?

I'm not a cheap-o I'm just surprised that my stock set-up is costing me more.

Wierd. Even the Ti packeage rims are 235/40's. If they were 35's then that kinda sounds legit since it's harder to mount lower profile tires. I think they were just lookin for a few more bucks IMO.

Some shops will charge more for 17" wheels and bigger. I think thats total BS. I worked in tire shops for 4.5 years changed thousands of tires and repaired more.

Kal-tire locally here fixes flats for free. It didn't matter if it was a stock 13" Honda tire or a 20" Low pro. I fixed them all for free. Now thats customer service for you.

Which is rediculous in a day and age where cars come stock with 18" wheels and trucks with 20" and i know there are exceoptions with larger as well.

i pay my local shop 5 bucks for mounting, and they do the job right in less than 3 mins, no scratches or dumping ur rims around.
