View Full Version : stranges sounds at higher speeds

there was a lot of snow here the other night and I gave in to the temptation to go and enjoy my quattro. but I might have enjoyed it a little too much. I did several sweet donuts...so sweet that when I was done I smelled burnt rubber.....yea wish I had some vids......
but now there is a high pitched wine/screech when I drove 45+. I know my right front bearing needs to be changed and the screech seems to be in sync with the *woop woop woop* sound from the bad bearing.
your input will be we'll-received.

So, replace your wheel bearing and see if the noise goes away. Wheel bearings can definitely have a high pitch squeal to them. Doughnuts would put a strain on the already bad bearing.

I was quoted 296.xx to do the front right wheel bearing. is that good/bad?

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. $70-90 for the bearing and 2-3hrs at $90-100 and hour = $250-$390

That sucks, let me know if that takes care of all the issues.

well i got my car back today. i really like that shop though. he knew i wasn't trying to spend a lot of money so he looked around for the axle.. no shops around here had any besides the dealer, so he bought the joint from the dealer and repaired my previous axle. he also cleaned my throttle body, put my bumper back on right, turned off some lights, and the bearing for 550 (parts, labor, and towing). i will be going back in the spring for some more work. the car runs like a dream right now!!
