To protect your car from debris that gets kicked up from cars in front of you, also can be safety related. The debris can shatter your lights (rare case), if it happens...taping lights can prevent pieces from dropping all over the track.

Many tracks have dirt, gravel and rocks in the run off areas and this stuff gets kicked up when someone drops a wheel off the track or if a car goes off track and gets back on.
