Has anyone ever done it???
I randomly/last minute booked a suite in Tahoe for the night......And then remembered I have to work on Monday....I get off at 3:30pm so thats not too bad but I'm worried about traffic going up the hill....Anyone have any input on what I have to look forward to???
Also....I am going to be putting my stock wheels/tires on which are M+S but should I buy chains/cables too???....I have Quattro, but I have no idea if the DOT will require chains even with AWD if its storming bad....

DOT require chains? huh? there's no such thing as the DOT police.
your car is 10X safer than just about any other car on the road. The DOT could only wish everyone was driving an audi.

A few of my friends and I were talking about going up but it's not gonna happen. We will probably go up to the snow in mid January.

i've been.... as long as you have awd and mud/snow tires your good to go. get up there as early as you can. especially if its going to be snowing, my friends were stuck on highway 50 for 5 hours. so yea leave early, all weather tires, chains just incase(i highly doubt you will need them). beer, more beer, camera...... anything else? money....
oh and i will be up there, im leaving friday after work and most likely leaving on wed... pm me if you have any questions. i'll be driving the S for sure. its def a good time. so many people out on the strip just drinking and having fun. the streets are closed so everyone can be outside.
oh and bring warm clothes. lol

if the forecast has any hint of snow, i'd pick up some chains just in case. some places will let you return them at the end of the season, if they are unused.
yes, 99% of the time you are good to go with 4wd/awd and M&S/snow tires. but there have been times, that it was bad enough out where they wanted me to put on cables/chains before moving on further. in those instances. its pretty bad out, and you may want to just sit it out, but thats your call.
NYE in tahoe is cool. south lake? or you gonna hit up reno? north shore is pretty boring. so if you are in n. shore stick with a house party with friends.

My friends and I usually go up for new years. We rent a cabin for a week which comes out being about $250 for the whole week per person! Thats a hella good deal considering thats how much a hotel room will cost for 1 night. We wont be making it this year because we are going to the euro cup this summer!! One winter my brother took is B6 on the stock tires up to tahoe and it was snowing like crazy and all they did was looked at his quattro badge and let us through. I recomend you should go to the stateline during the count down and go skiing at Squa valley as they have night skiing which is hella awsome (open untill 9 PM).

I'll be going to South Shore....I've been there for 4th of July and had a blast so hoping this tops it.....Also, someone mentioned buying chains from a store where I can return them....Anyone know where that may be?....In the past i've bought chains and they were non returnable....

I live in South Lake and you should buy chains just incase. You can get a $600 ticket if they check at chain control, not likely but it can happen.

We're supposed to get a huge storm this week, Thurs-Sun. It's supposed to drop 5-10 ft! above 7,000 ft. I would bring chains.
