On the plus side, the BMW roundel is much easier to clean.

I've owned both and in general, BMW will be more reliable if you're comparing the I6 to the turbo 4 simply because of the number of moving parts and system complexity. V6 vs. I6, mostly a wash but BMW will still probably edge out Audi in reliability since a LSD less RWD system is still a lot less complex than say Quattro.

Otherwise, they both mostly get their parts from all the same suppliers in Germany like Bosch.

Between BMW and Audi, at least with 6 bangers, just pick the one you want.

LMAO that's perfect

But seriously. Asking here is just begging to get fed all sorts of crap.

If reliability is the foremost concern for you, buy a Corolla S.

A good source of info is Consumer Reports, they solicit responses from owners on all sorts of products. Lately Porsche has beaten out the perennial heavyweight, Lexus.

There you go.

I like this response... it's not possible for you to get a good answer in an Audi forum. You should ask in a mercedes forum [;)]

hmm thats prob a hard guess. i previously had a bmw 328 that lasted till 130,000 miles with no significant problems. i sold it with that many miles too.
I would say that the bmw would have a very slight edge over the audi but not much, however, the b7 is a much more reliable car than previous generations.

Have you ever seen the switches in a A6 or B6 A4?

Also depends on which motor and tranny you are talking about. The Audi CVT tranny? Obviously not one of their best endeavors. But the Audi/VW 1.8t motor...bullet proof unless you only change the oil once a year. The BMW straight six motors...again, bullet proof relatively speaking. Will their twin turbo motor be the same? Who knows. Both companies do have some powertrains that are very reliable but I agree if I had a car out of warranty and had no mechanical ability to do my own repairs it would be a BMW straight six car.

Yeah I have to disagree with this one. Audi and VW are known for the famous "peeling interior". Along the door handle area and switches and around the cig lighter area. I've owned 10 year old BMWs that look brand new inside. THe price you pay for a nicer feeling "soft touch" rubbery plastics.

oh, i bet that is completely possible, but i was just going off my personal experience. ive seen many bmw interior plastics peeling (specifically 5 series). And most have the ash tray doors break and the AC vents break too. The only wear and tear i see in audis are some of the switches peel

The new BMWs have been worse than our Audis. One even had a brake failure (not fun) our new BM has always had something wrong with it. We have had it less than half a year and already the electronic dipstick has broken leading the engine to be over filled with oil. the horns don't work. all the window trim is spotted and in need of replacement. and today I just pulled out the little flashlight all BMs have and of course it broke... :-( Nice to drive though. If I were you I would just buy the car that you like the most. I am sure they would both last long with proper maintenance.

If you're so worried about reliability get the Lexus IS... but the only drawback is that Lexus designed the interior for Asian females (not to mention the suspension and handling inferiority also). So a 5'10" average-build Asian person like me has trouble sitting comfortably in the driver's seat because of the tight/claustrophobic fit around me.

I'm asking because i'm looking to buy one...
from everything i've experienced (having owned both), N/A BMW's have been more reliable than my Audi's - from electrical, to glove boxes, to transmissions, BMW has been top notch (Audi can't seem to even fix a glove box)...oh and the service blows Audi of the water, as if that needed to even be mentioned.

J.D. Powers and Associates rated Audi below average, go figure. For where you're at, quattro doesnt really matters. It matters when you put down big numbers on power!
Personally, i still love Audi more than BMW. the 3 series is ugly as hell, i hate the sides so much! the interior is ok!

JD Powers is kind of messed up anyway. Their reliability survey is questionable because some of the questions they ask don't really ask how reliable their car has been but they present it as a reliability survey.

audi and BMW are goign to be the exact thing as for maintenance. If you went to BMW you might get the perfect one and never have a prob. At the same time if you get another Audi, that might be the prime one and never have a problem.

For most of us, we have had problems with our car, but even with that we still love our cars and probably would buy another one!

It's more of a personal optinion on which car is "better"

Me/my father have been original owners of a 1987 bmw 325 and it has lasted us about 298,xxx miles, on original EVERYTHING except minor bells and whistles that needed to replaced. Transmission, head, etc. and all other major parts are all original. the car still runs great, but has more recently grown into a money pit, like most electronic components are starting to go because of the car's age, which is expected. we JUST replaced it with a B7 A4...give me another 20 years and i'll let you know if its nearly as reliable as the bmw.

I must say I have an A4 and to be quite honest I am glad I signed up for a 24 month lease. I only have 11 months left and I believe I will be switching to BMW. But not before a thorough examination of the A5.

the reason for this is that older cars generally didn't have as much stuff as cars have nowadays. the older cars had ac, the newer cars have more tech than a nasa spaceshuttle destined for pluto.

it's true though, that older audis did suck really bad. so honestly, comparing anything to an old audi is probably a joke. audi barely made it in the american market, but luckily the b6 platform finally gave audi something to show-off, both in terms of design and a more importantly, a huge step up in reliability.

lol ya. my buddy is on this site and works there too, he drives an s4. from coworkers our age, one has a show evo, another a lexus is, and another an 05 m3. So more of us drive other than bmw. Nobody cares though, you'd be surprised how many people that work there don't like bmw's.

What is total bullshit is that if Audi wants to compete with BMW, they need to step up their customer service game. We have 4 year/50k miles free maintenance too. The only reason I am considering swapping my Audi for a BMW right now is because of the awesome employee lease deals that I get which are making it questionable to be paying as much as I do for my b5.

01-13-2008, 10:27 AM
Well to me I think the customer service, maintenance, and reliability are about the same between the two. If you are trying to compare and audi to the 335xi I don't think there is a competitor however I personally think the new audi just look a lot better than the new 3 and 5 series BMW. I think the new style BMW has really taken a step backwards in terms of look and design. So if the other things are equal then for me audi would win out easily on looks.

BMW may have just gone as far as they can with their design's. Their very radical lines and edge's on the BMW's, especially the 3 series. But the 7's, M6, and 5 series' look fantastic. I myself, work at a GM dealer, certified tech., and i would never buy a Chevrolet this day and age, even if they are at their prime, they still suck. Only reason why i leased my Audi is because its drop dead sexy, and the dealership gave us great rates on a lease through them, and the 2002 S6 Avanat that has that super quick v8 awd and had the best interior i had ever seen, BBS wheels, a bunch of aftermarket componets, and it kick the crap out of high end sports cars and could keep up with corvette's and such. Yes i do own a Chevrolet, haha 85 Camaro, very beginning of the not so great OBD-I.

I love the 335xi, but unfortunately it was designed for midgets. I am 6-5 and felt like a sardeen when I got behing the wheel of that thin. Plus the lease rates for BMW's are outragous. They want crazy money just for the name. So far my A4 has been phenominal, dealer was great, and service people are nice as can be. BMW sucked when I had a 525 for a very short period.

Our BMW is broken AGAIN...........The horn doesn't work, the flashlight doesn't work, the electronic dipstick doesn't work (we have no idea how much oil is in the V-10), the trim pieces are defective, and the hood doesn't like to latch. and to make it so much better the dealer here is incompetent!

I agree about the 335 size issues, I am only 6'2" but a big guy and I felt a little cramped as well, enough head room for me but just felt like the cockpit was too small. i wondering the 335xi four door version would be better?

For reliability, I think I would trust BMW a little more. I also like BMW's styling more, but they are a little more expensive for what you get. Both cars (A4 vs different 3series) drove great and were about the same size.

The reason I chose Audi is mainly Quattro obviously, but you get more options/better interior for less money. The warranties were the same and I was pretty torn...

Yeah, Hyundai/Kia/Dodge/whoever else has that 100k mile warranty... You do realize that's only a powertrain warranty, right? It covers no maintenance, no interior/body parts or issues, nothing but the engine's main parts and drivetrain. A powertrain warranty is worthless IMO because those parts almost NEVER fail when they shouldn't. Everyone covers that shit...
