Well, thought I would share my experience, one post at a time, documenting my rebuild. I am going to do other things while I am in here. Wanting to do the piggie mod (already started), the darintake (done), the CC mod, 710n dv's, F hose, TBB, might cut the resonator off. If money and time allows, TB. Wanting to upgrade to a RS4 clutch with LWFW, the upgraded solid linkage, solid shifter stabilizing bushing, and obvioulsy the rebuild kit from JHMotorsports. Want to fix my front bumper since she is not aligned properly, if there is money left over, which there won't be, might upgrade the front fender...I hope to be done by mid Feb. So, with that all said, here is the start...

First, receive car back from shop in pieces because they can't figure it out...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01711.jpg

Next, clean garage...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01727.jpg

Put car in garage with manual power...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01754.jpg

Lay parts on table, with a side beer...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01767.jpg

Pull out intake...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01742.jpg

Drill...
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01739.jpg

Clean metal to metal contacts...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01740.jpg

Get OCD and clean under airbox...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01743.jpg

Put car on jack stands and take a look at clutch/flywheel...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01749.jpg

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01748.jpg

Remove DP's...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01751-1.jpg

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01750.jpg

Clean under the cowl...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01753.jpg

Well, thats about where I am at right now... hoping to have more done soon, this will take a while!!!

So you all know, I took my car to a shop that could not do the rebuild, they gave me the car back in many pieces so I get to figure out what goes where... I ordered the Bentley but when it got here, I recieved the B6... I think I was a little too quick to hit the submit button... it happens. Wish me luck!!!

Thanks for your reading this far!!!

Thanks for the pics, I'm gearing up for a possible tranny rebuild myself sometime soon. Looking forward to seeing pics of that when you get to it.
Also, the Guam plate on your wall... did you use to live there, or just a collector of plates from odd places? I graduated from HS there, so just wondering.

I was stationed there for two years... I keep plates from my old cars, that one was on my Ford Exploder... Love the weather, and the strip clubs... :D

Adam, guess I will take off the 56 comment, true, I don't think anyone has 56k anymore, just sounded like a good excuse to grab a beer...

So I am looking to due TB while the car is out of commision... Any recommendations on where to order the complete kit? Any parts they do not sell with a kit you all think should be replaced? I am going to start to tear the front end apart to look at her soon...as soon as Bentley shows up... I was thinking about this kit, ECS does not have the cam locking tool available as of now and will probably rent from this company... what you think?

ECS has a kit also, i think it may have a few extra parts. I'm going to have the hydraulic tensioner, accessory belts and cam seals done also just as preventative maintenance.

You have any problems removing the downpipes on jacks? I know it sounds dumb but i really haven't done anything exhaust related on a car.

txaudifan
12-19-2007, 09:12 AM
I like the ECS kit but they don't have the cam lock tool available and I can rent from this other site... Seems like they have the same parts to me... maybe I am missing something?? I have been looking at so many kits they all kind of blend together, haha, thats why I came for advice.

Well, when I took off the DP's, the shop before me already took them off once so the bolts were loose. There was one heat shield, on the passenger side, that was still on but easily worked around. Guess it cost me 500 to get help removing parts... haha

txaudifan
12-23-2007, 07:42 AM
Well, got a little further in my quest!! I ordered some new preventative parts, 710N's, Samco TBB, F hose, and a new front CV Boot kit... I have one ripped. I still need to order the tranny kit and the TB kit... As soon as I get the car apart I will order the TB kit. Since ECS does not have the cam lock tool I am going to rent from the other shop above. Also going to go with 034 Trans mounts...

Can I replace the motor mounts with the motor in there... I know someone answered but did not know how to take it...serious or a joke... Also, the ECS pulley kit, I am thinking about it since I have read somewhere that you might as well replace the pulleys while the car is apart as preventative maint... So on with the pics of what I accomplished today when I got home from work...

So I managed to get the CC mod done... well almost, I just need to clean out the inside..

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01792.jpg

Also got the bumper off today, ran into some hickups that I will need the Bentley for so I hung it up for the day. Hoping to get the lock carrier off sometime next week and start the timing belt job...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01783.jpg

Until next time...

No answer on if I should replace the pulleys? I think I will wait on the motor mounts, saw on another thread to just wait until the motor gets pulled... I managed to get the lock carrier off tonight... Also going to go ahead and order the whole hose kit from AWE since I have all these parts off and can get to them right now... Any you have a suggestion on what else might fail while I have all these parts off... might as well get them now instead having to pull this sh1t off again... thanks... a few pics...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01794.jpg

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01793.jpg

Got bit by the lock carrier, no time for the stitches, just used a first aid kit and pressed on!!

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/DSC01796.jpg

Going to order my TB kit soon... what is the best way to get those pesky DV's off? Those clamps are retarded!!

Update: Well, I have all the internals back in and the tranny bolted together, I get to go home and look for ONE bolt for the clutch release arm and then it will be done!! I have the next two nights off so lets hope that the shop did not lose my bolt and I can bolt the tranny in this week. I still need to run thru the gears to make sure everything is running smoothly...

Thanks goes out to Jay at JHMotorsports.com for ALOT of help and patience... anyone thinking of rebuilding their transmission, do it... very rewarding (so far [:D]) as long as it drives when put back in... haha

PS... just found out, no bolt and got Jay's email after ordering the new bolt so will have to wait until early next week to put the tranny back in... So far the gears shift smooth and I like the tight feel of the new synchros. Will keep posted and a vid of the NEW car when I am done...[wrench]

Do you feel confident that the tranny is correct just by shifting it outside the car? I know jay said you can tell, but it would just suck if you installed it and it didn't work. I am doing mine soon, and only want to do it once, haha.

Dude, the tranny blew right before I deployed last summer and has not been on the road since... I REALLY cant wait!!!

Wow, good job man.

Thanks! It has been quite and adventure!!!

I feel confident. I tore it apart and put it together twice, studied the Bentley and picked Jay's brain often. I have to feel confident, I have no choice at this point. If it does not work properly, I just get extra practice pulling and installing too [wrench]

You know, I did not know anything about a tranny, and to be honest, the TB and this tranny rebuild are both the most indepth thing I have EVER done with a car. I just have confidence in my skills at paying attention to detail and willingness to take my time to do it right. The tranny is quite simple... some gears, syncrhos, shift collars, shafts and some bearings really.

I should take a pic of the tranny sitting on a spare tire in my garage just for momento sake. Oh yeah, started doing the work on my RS4 style bumper too...

Well did you at least have some kinda of manual showing you how it all went back togather? I mean, it looks like you got it back in a box.

I bought the Bentley manual and made friends with Jay at JHM. I picked his brains when I was lost. He helped alot and was very patient. If I had tore this apart I would have not had so many little questions but like you said, I got this tranny back in a box full of a mess.

I don't think I am even going to try and put the heat shields back on... I will just wrap my exhaust. I am tired of figuring out which bolt goes where and the shields are not too important as long as I wrap.

Cool find!! Would not mind owning that tool, then again how many times really will an average person do the TB on their car? For an Audi mechanic that would pay for itself truely!

The bolt that goes there they lost so I ordered a new one. Next week tranny in car!! About another week afterwards hope to be on the road... still need to finish the Piggie's. I am waiting for SSautochrome to get the exhaust in so for now piggie's will suffice.

For me the time is a little more than normal due to circumstances but I have to say I am glad I did this myself! You should be able to get it done reasonably fast compared. It is pretty much a straight forward rebuild. Just keep all parts in a baggy and labeled and you will do perfectly. Wish I did not have just a box but baggies... Guess the shop thought they were so good they did not need to keep track... haha... any questions you can ask Bertworks on here, Jay at JHM and I can even give a little advice now as a first timer... I did tear it apart twice to make sure[headbang] [wrench]. GL and let us know when you start and how everything goes man!!

This is an extra part that the shop gave me... I am not sure how the hell they mixed this up with my tranny....

OK... so my bumper is not the best looking... even for an S4 bumper so I started doing the RS4 mod and had to weld a crack so here are the pictures of the progress... I started really making a move on thise yesterday and here is where I stand now...
The bumper came with an awful crack

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/Tranny/Front%20bumper/DSC01964.jpg

Decided to take a chance and weld it... it can't look no worse than it did before...

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/Tranny/Front%20bumper/DSC01977.jpg

There was another crack... I practiced with this hidden crack but felt it was worth the effort to fix....

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/txaudifan/Tranny/Front%20bumper/DSC01983.jpg

Going to refinish the whole bumper on my own... lets find out how it looks later but for now here is some of the prep work...

More pics as I get further... I am willing to bet the primered bumper will be on the car after me not driving for almost a year so this bumper might take a little longer than expected... then again who knows... until next update, this is AJ signing off... haha!!!

HAHA... do heat it up... and get some type of strong pipe to put around the shaft so that the bearing is not touching any part of the press... I blew mine up the first time by pressing directly against the bearing. You want to have that pipe pushing on the inner race of the bearing. Live and learn!![wrench]

I am sure Jay's video will help ALOT!!! I have had to call him a few times so some of my questions I am sure are answered in there... haha. Just take your time, label baggies with the bolts and read my post... dont let a two bit transmission shop attempt the work then give up and give you a box of bolts[headbang]... haha!! I know I would not have had this many hang ups and would be done if I would have just decided to do it myself from the get go... should have researched more.

There's not a mechanic in my city that I trust to work on my car, except me [;)]

I will have a couple of days with a shop just to myself to rebuild the tranny once I have it out of the car. I intend to watch the video and read through this thread, etc before I do that, so that it all goes smoothly and I can get it done in a couple of days!

Well, did not make on all fours today but I did start the car!! Now just one more day... stupid work! If anyone ever has their car towed without the tranny in it, make sure you emphasize this to the tow truck driver... He pushed my clutch in to stop the car and I had to bleed the tranny... Why the hell he did it I have not a clue... the motor was not even on obviously! DIP SHIT!!!!! So, tomorrow I will post pics of the car actually in the drive way and not in the garage on jack stands.

Car is done and on the road!! Thanks a million times to Jay at JHM!! If not for his wonderful support over the phone and email, this car would still be in the garage. Jay, if I could buy you one 10 beers I would say lets go... Thanks!! If anyone is getting ready to pay high dollar for a rebuild, think twice and do it yourelf with his kit and now (too late for me [:D]) his rebuild video. I took a look at it and it is def is good quality!! Jay will give you support on his product the other big dogs dont have the time or ability to, he does not just sell products, he uses them as well so when you call him, he can diagnos right over the phone and not have to resort to a manual. If I had to do this all over again, I would have started it from the beginning and not half way thru an ignorant shops start...

Time to go for another drive to break in the clutch [drive]... just might drive over to that tranny shop and give them back there extra parts they gave me... tell them, "while I was rebuilding the transmission, I noticed you gave me this gear from someone elses transmission, figured you were looking for it so I thought I would return it." haha!!!! Do you feel confident that the tranny is correct just by shifting it outside the car? I know jay said you can tell, but it would just suck if you installed it and it didn't work. I am doing mine soon, and only want to do it once, haha.

In my video I show how to run it through the gears out of the car. If you feel it before and the tranny was quite while in the gears while driving as well it should feel the same. Manual transmissions are that straightforward as long as bearings and gears aren't worn bad.

[wrench][drive][race]

DIY FTW!!!!

JHM FTMFW!!!!!!!!!!

I am almost in tears thinking of one of your first emails with a picture of a lot of parts and no idea where they went, and sending you diagrams as well. Brings it all back man. Gonna miss your late night phone calls. HAHA.

Proud of ya boss, I remember my first one back in 05, broke that bearing too. [up]

I can give you a call one night out of the blue... don't want you to miss them too much [:D]

Thanks again Jay! [hail] Look forward to purchasing the rest of your products for my S. Soon man, real soon! Break in the tranny and clutch, and while the car is apart for suspension I will pull the ECU and ship your way! I am craving more power already and just barely started driving it again... [drive]

No problem.

Let me know when you get serious about the suspension. I have accounts with most vendors.

Got a deal from a guy in Dallas for a set... nuthin special but the price is right!! Eibach springs with Koni shocks... I appreciate the offer tho! When I want good handling suspensio and can afford it, you will be the first I call!! He is throwin in an Ipod adapter with it... Also, I am assuming it would be a good time to replace the blown speed sensor so I will fix that then... free miles for my car!! bwahahaha!![drive]

What clutch did you get? How many miles are you going to run it before you start hammerin her?

I have the Kevlar stage II from JHM/VAST, going to do my best to go 500 b4 i get on her real hard... it is not easy driving miss daisy!!

Thanks! look forward to seein your pics... the car does shift alot better!! I love it, I just need to get used to my clutch, I noticed I need to push it further then I used to, atleast it seems that way, when I push to the floor seems I get a smoother shift, could be mental too... been 11 months since I drove her... that just sounds horrible but true!! I deployed last may and the tranny was shot about a month before I deployed so 11 sounds right...

MAKE SURE YOU GIVE AT LEAST 500miles FOR BREAK IN ON THAT KEVLAR!

Just wanted to get your attention and make sure you don't frack up your new clutch and have to pull the tranny again [;)]

BTW, what kind of differences are you guys noticing as far as shifting goes between the new upgrade and stock? Do you think the upgraded friction material on the synchros makes a difference?

Try bleeding the clutch one more time next time it is in the air. Or your old clutch may have just been shot. HAHA.

+1. Kevlar needs a long break in. Get lots of city driving in. My Kevlar served me well after breaking it in for a while.

I will try and bleed the clutch again... Ughh... haha

Also, i am thinking that I will wait about two and a half tanks before I get on her, that should be about right... no odometer for this guy!! ;)

To be honest, it has been so long since I drove this car, and the last time I did I did not have 1st or 2nd so I could not tell you any differences I notice [=(]

but I can say I enjoy the feel of the car!! just can't open it up yet

Nice, I'm excited to get this thing done and see for myself how she shifts! Make sure you drive it like a complete grandma for at least 500 miles. A few tanks of gas should do it.

Well, I am at about one tank... about one and a half to go and I am going to enjoy ower again!! It don't help that half the time I am off work the bumper is sitting on a table in my garage getting worked on. If it were not for spring break and the GF being able to stay over all hours of the night, the bumper would atleast be done and primered ready for paint... but thats the way it go sometimes... haha

Nice man. Hey I was thinking of building a thread just to aid others in rebuilding their trannys. It would be only for those doing it. Then people like you could share the problems they ran into and some pictures. I am probably going to save all your pictures and use them when I start the thread.

it will probably be called "The official Rebuild Your Own Transmission Thread by JHM"

What do you think? I think it will help me and other support all the people who decide to tackle it. My video will take a ton of the guesswork out, but it doesn't take into account what people may break and need advice on.

Thanks

Thats cool with me! Anything that will help others out with questions and concerns I am all for. I know this job can be daunting. Since you have a better understanding of what the process is, I think you would do a better job putting a thread up.

Just read through this, still deciding if i wanna rebuild my tranny myself or not. Where can i get that bearing that a few of you broke? if i gotta press it off i gurantee myself i'm going to break it hahah, so i'd like to have that bearing in hand before i start.

Damn old thread lol

the bearing that we broke we bought at a dealer, mine cost 250 plus tax for that big bearing. i recommend when u install the bearing again have it pressed in AND use a bearing heater, its not as hard as u think. if i worked on my tranny more than 2 -3 hours a day only 2 days a week and if i didnt break anythign i would have been done in 2 days total... this is without the video and calling Jay all the time lol honestly the best way is pulling the motor with the tranny its easier for someone without a lift and that way u can also work on your clutch.

I didn't break the bearing, it came off and on just fine. Just throw it in some boiling water for a minute before you install it and MAKE SURE you press against the inner race of the bearing, not the outer race.

jaybquick@JHM
07-05-2008, 12:45 PM
They are correct. If you heat up the bearing it goes on WAAAYYYYY easier. And the home DIY trick is to stick it in boiling water for a couple minutes.
