I just came across a ripped outer tie rod boot and all the snow, water sand, salt, crap is going to attack the ball joint internals. It does not have any play in it yet, but how much time does it have till it starts causing trouble. I had an alignment done during the summer so the current tie rod ends should not be seized.

Should I replace both sides at the same time or just the bad one?

Do both sides, you can get heavy duty tie rods so you don't have to worry about them for a looong time. They're not expensive either, one less headache to worry about.
