although, im not really planning on swapping my engine anytime soon, would it it be very easy/possible to swap in an I-5 Turbo engine from an earlier Audi into the B5?

I dont think it'll fit! You either have to chop of the rad support or notch out the firewall.. Didn't that old school Neuspeed A4 Race Car have an I5 in it? Hmm..

The I5 is too long for the engine bay

I could've sworn 034 was gonna initially do an I5 swap but decided to go with the VRT due to the higher availability of parts (I5 parts are a lot rarer than the common VR).

There was a B5 here in Colorado a couple of years back that took some 1st place at the Pikes Peak hillclimb that had an I5 in it. It fit, but they may have moved the radiator forward, I'm not sure. http://www.champagnemotors.com/

^^sweet, i didnt know about that one

i just searched for it, and check out the vids of it here:

sounds like a killer-b rally car...but with b5 driving.

on the other hand, it looks like they had to butcher the front bumper to get the radiator to fit.

if those canucks made a 4.2 fit in a b5, im sure an i5 can be stuffed, but as said pretty serious modification of the front end is required (as was the case with the 4.2)

The VR6 is shorter and more "power dense" than the I5. I think the I5 is even longer than the 4.2 V8. Length is very much an issue when you look at the hood latch on 034's car.
