View Full Version : misfires, i searched...

so tonight i leave my house. i am just driving normally, and as i give it a little throttle, i get 2 or 3 backfires, and the car feels like it hicupped but it doesnt sound like the popping that happens sometimes when i rev or change gears, and that doesnt happen in succession. Also happens at the top WOT. Im not get a cel or anything. i searched and it seemed like a lot of people were having trouble with their plugs, but i just put new denso iridium plugs in not to long ago. im pretty sure they are gapped properly, .044 for the ATW. I just got chipped a few days ago and its gotten cold out. im trying to think of anything else that might affect this... how bad is it actually, and what are any suggestions to fix it? Thanks

Coil pack(s), one of mine went yesterday so I had them all replaced today.
Do a search for coil packs, I was stunned how many other people have posted on this in the last couple of days. It seems to be happening to "everyone".

.044 is the wrong gap, its 0.032 for stock or .028 for chipped

so is it more likely my coil pack? or is it my spark plugs... driving around just now, it has no problem on start up, idle's smooth, but when boost builds it starts to pop again, and the car hiccups. would my diverter valve have anything to with it? too stiff/ not stiff enough setting?

i seem to recall that you cant regap denso iridium plugs...

no, i had to swap for champion iridiums, properly gapped at .028 and that seems to have fixed it. now just one more question... would those backfires have covered the densos in soot? they barely were in a month, and there was already build up. i searched around a bit, and i may be running rich but im not throwing codes. gas milage around town has gone down a bit, but i think thats just because im enjoying that reflash... would an easy running rich solution be to get a mbc and turn it up a bit?

sorry about so many noob questions... i have been searching

you werent burning the gas completely, thats why you were getting misfires, thus foulin up your plugs

ive been misfiring lately too, got new coil packs coming tomorrow. i also had the denso plugs but i was unaware of the .028 gap for the chip...these cant be regapped?

when i got denso iridiums (and yes, they started misfiring after about 2k miles) the box said that you cant gap them, and my buddy that works at autozone says people break the electrodes off all the time trying to gap them

apparently on the denso website it says you can but you have to use special tools, and can measure it with a gapper, otherwise you could break it. so im not sure exactly how you would go about making sure you have the correct gap.

ps, is it weird i didnt get a cel for this? it would backfire a lot...
