lol next time search.....anyways 5w 30 / 5w 40 that just means temperature because you wouldnt want to use thicker oil in the winter....just stick with 5w 30 and castrol mobile1 it doesnt matter....but then again i just stick with castrol lol gl

In terms of cold weather protection, meaning you want low viscosity so that the oil gets to the moving whirling bits ASAP, the "5" in the "5W 30 or 5W 40" is the same "5".
A "5W 30" basically has the same "weight" when cold as a "5W 40".
The "30" and "40" indicate weight at operating temp.
Thicker oils aren't necessarily better in hot weather, as it has more to do with the oil mixture itself. However, given the same quality the "40" has a bit more weight, and some say that a high quality 30 weight could help remove heat better as it's lighter and less viscous at temp.
However, the 40 may be needed due to the higher temps that are seen in turbocharged engines, especially an FSI type engine where the fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber. That high pressure fuel spray can dilute the oil on the cylinder walls, and potentially cause a lowering of viscosity over time.
If 5W 40 is recommended then use the recommended weight.

Most of my oil changes have been with 0W 40, occasionally 5W 40.

There are currently 0 US formulations in 5w-30 that meet vw502. There is one in 0w-30 that meets vw502 which is german made castrol syntec. Otherwise as far as non specialty oils (oils that most of us would have to order on the internet) that meet vw502 you have valvoline 5w-40 synthetic, castrol 5w-40 synthetic, mobil 1 0w-40 synthetic. There are some others but those are easy ones to find at autozone/wal-mart/your local mobil station. If you are into specialty oils you can go with a motul, pentosin, elf, lubro moly, etc but if you change the oil at 5K miles you are fine with any of the above.
cheers! Mike

On a somewhat unrelated note, how does the car's service reminder work? Is it just an x amount of miles type of thing, or does it actually measure the car's oil somehow? My mom drives a new Tahoe, and it displays '% of oil life remaining' and the salesman insisted that the car actually monitors the oil, and it is not just based on miles driven. Does the A4s system work like this? I ask because my service reminder went off at 12k miles, and instead of waiting for my scheduled 15k service, I went ahead and got an oil change anyways. Is this a waste? I personally don't like going 10k miles on one oil change, especially with that oil-cooking turbo under the hood...

Did you get just a regular oil change or the 15k service done? I prefer to do the oil changes in between as well, but also like to keep inline with service intervals based on mileage. Not really a big difference but helps to keep track. Otherwise you're always gonna be off a few thousand from the recommended intervals. Also there's an allowable range for services.

Just an oil change, I had one at 5k (5k service), one at 6k (don't ask), one at 12k (just an oil change), and will get the 15k service next. Does anyone know about the service reminder in the DIS?

They should have changed it to 10k intervals at your 5k service. Next time you bring it in just remind them to change it. You can also reset it yourself by holding the check button (wrench), turn the ignition to on, and press the odometer reset (0,0). This will reset the service reminder.

So it just goes off every 5k miles? I.E., it's not monitoring the oil or anything? That's what I wanted to know. I guess they didn't change it to 10k intervals at the 5k service, because I've been having to manually reset it whenever I get an oil change (around 5k).
