View Full Version : Just got a 90 Quattro - couple question

Well I feel like I'm going back in time.. I started here in the B7 forums.. in July got a B5S4... and today just picked up a 1990 Quattro 90. Definitely have the Audi fever.
Anyways.. I totally bought the car on a whim - it has 210k and, according to the seller needs a fuel injector and radiator. I got the car for $500 - so what do I have to lose, right? The body/paint is pretty damn good (Pearl White) and interior is above average... pretty nice. All power works except passenger seat.
Anyways.. I'm torn between 'flipping' it for ~$1200 and making a quick buck or fixing it up (i.e. putting another $500 into getting it running well). I don't want to dump too much money into it.
So... what do you guys think? The car starts up perfect, first turn, but stumbles and sputters. It drives, but acceleration is slow. I haven't had a chance to vag-com and do full inspection (check plugs, compression, etc). But starting with an initial investment of $500 i think I did alright. what do you guys think?
Any advice for where to get the best price on a radiator and fuel injector? I saw 034 Motorsport has hi-impedence injectors for $300 for a set of 5. Anyone have experience with these? Part of me wants to buy 1 injector initially to confirm if it's a bad injector causing the stumble or something more serious.
Any insight from fellow I5 owners is appreciated! Sorry for the long rambling post!

Congrats on your new vintage purchase. You may want to cruise on over to AudiWorld's 80/90/Coupe Quattro forum as there is a wealth of information there with a more active I5 community. Good luck with getting her back to shape.

Yeah it is much more active over there - i was up too late reading those forums, 20v.org and audifans.com for parts.
Looks like I might be able to get her back to good running shape for 'cheap' with the Audifans marketplace. I might just have to keep her!

Dood I would keep that. You will appreciate Audi's even more when you start working on the old ones.... IMHO.
I must admit i'm sort of a "convert" from the B6 world to the 20v world...

Yeah I took the injectors off yesterday - 4 out of 5 had broken shrouds. I have 5 on the way so hopefully that fixes the problem.
If i can get it running decent for $1000 out the door, i'll keep it. I don't want to toss money at it considering its true value is probably ~$1800 running well. I'd rather spend $2500 on one with less miles and that has been maintained better.
I know this for sure - I have been reading a lot (too much) the last couple days and these I-5's are sweet engines. I'm going to be keeping my eye out for an early S4 or other 2.2T car. I'm sure I'll own one or two of these older Audi's over the next 5 years.
BTW - nice CQ. It would be too small and impractical for me, but I would buy one simply for a long term investment. Those things aren't going any lower and should only go up in value IMO. Beautiful color! You still in SoCal or move up north already? What part of SoCal?

90 90q's are great cars! PM me if you decide you want to flip it. I'm outa cash now, but I'd be willing to sell a few things.

will do! i know it needs at min. a valve cover gasket too. I'm hoping to get out w/ injectors and gaskets and have a fairly well running vehicle. Crossing my fingers...
i'll keep you posted.

FORGET what it costs to keep, most people seem to forget there were only 1700 imported during 90-91.... i would keep it because it's only gonna get more rare. At least, that's how I see things....
EDIT: and to be honest not many CQs and URs4s make it out to Cali. If they do it seems they end up @ 034 or 2B....

Only 1700 CQ's were imported, right? You wouldn't happen to know numbers for 90Q sedans, would you?

yeah i can't tell you how infrequently i see them here in SoCal. I was admiring a clean 4000 a couple weeks ago and realized i NEVER see anything much older than B5's (a few B4's) but never B3's or older. [drive]

SHE'S ALIVE! Just got 5 new (used) injectors installed and she's running well, but not great... A little lifter tick / knock and some anemia above 4k but hey she's streetable at least and idling perfect!
Now to fix that hole in the radiator that keeps pissing. Pics to follow soon.

haha.. yeah overall it is pretty damn clean. California car it's whole life. The pictures do it more justice than it deserves. Up close there are definitely imperfections (areas of thin paint.. parts that look like they were washed with brillo pads, small dings, etc) but overall for 17 years old it's pretty freakin' clean - better than i was expecting for the money I spent. It's a 15 footer (looks almost perfect from 15 feet away).

DAMN that is clean. *jealous* i thought you had a CQ.
Regardless, i'd keep that sedan. it's a nice ride you should be able to put another 100k on it.
Then sell it for $500 hhahaha

True.. but I think if I'm going to be spending any money to fix up a ride a urS4 will be more fun! I don't have the space or ability to do an engine swap [:D]
saw on audiworld you were doing some injector removal - did it go okay? i didn't even run the fuel out I just pulled the injectors from the rail (little dribbles but it evaporated quick), then disconnected the rail from the lines (more dribbles, but nothing big). i was concerned too but it didn't spew like i thought it would.

So at this point probably less than 1000 left I would guess.. and even fewer in this condition! [:)]
