MY FIRST POST
PLEASE TELL ME IF I POSTED INCORRECTLY
The car: 98' Audi A4 QM (AEB)
The plan: 400awhp or bust
That's the idea guys. So far I have APR Stage 3 on the car so I will be using the manifold, turbo lines and dp from that kit but that's it.
Here's the parts I have...
PAGparts custom 3071R .64AR 3 inch inlet (custom to fit on the APR mani)
PAGparts actuator for custom turbo
Siemens 630cc's flowed/balenced
90mm Ford Lightning MAF
500hp Garrett Core (31x6.5x3)
Walbro 255lph intank
Chris Tapp custom tune
Innovate LM-1
What I still have to order...
Direct port w/m (prob USRT)
Refresh the head and some sort of cams by Bob@QED
Motor rebuild kit w/ rods (QED)
Here's what I haven't decided yet...
Type of cams
Type of EBC
Type of clutch
My first post but I've been reading AZ for a while now [az]

wow, at first i thought you were like all the other people on here that post "im getting "this" turbo, what do i need"
but you are definately serious
as far as cams, i know CAT cams have had some problems in the past, so best be would be to talk to Bob Quidanzi when you build your motor. both Greddy and HKS have some good EBC's that have been proven. and i would go Southbend stage 5 clutch.
you say freshen up the head with cams. but have you given any thought to upgrading valve springs and exhaust valves?

no... the way it is custom is the way he did the turbo in a 2871 housing but it still flows like a true 3071r... my pm from arnold on vortex, passatG60: sure, no problem. I can do one that would look identical to the GT2871R and the full sized 60mm turbine'd wheel. :end arnold quote:

Thanks.
I think there was another A4 owner that also did that type of turbo, not sure if hew as able to get 400whp. What was funny though is that he kept trying to claim he only had a GT2871r, but then let it out that he had 30 wheel inside.

pump... and w/m
so not straight pump but i will be able to fill up anywhere i please
93 + w/m = alot cheaper than racegas everyday and i drive 500+ miles weekly

honestly if you can do 400whp with a 3071R then I am real excited about my 30R project
317ssayzarc
10-29-2007, 02:45 PM
i would be too... i am going to canada to get it custom tuned by tapp
you can throw any combo of parts at anything but its ALL in the tune
i dont expect to hit 400 wheel with a mail order tune on my setup
the w/m is key to my goals... i dont think anyone could hit 400awhp on pump with a hybrid turbo like mine... its not even a true 3071r

onemoremile
10-30-2007, 07:45 AM
A small toggle switch mounted in the side of the ECU case switches between programs. I wonder if he would socket that so a switch could be wired in the car. It could be a simple toggle just like Tapp's or wired to the FUNK switch.

Toss that belt driven fan and it's pulley in the trash. Pure MS has a shorter belt that skips that pulley. Use a SPAL fan or similar with a temp controller like the one in the link below.

well some bad news today...
I was planning on throwing in scat rods and keeping the AEB pistions... Today when I started measuring the block to skirt clearence, i got about .004" which is out of spec by quite a bit... I am almost certain that this motor has been taken apart and heres why... (this motor has 126K on it) NO taper at all in the cylinders, cross hatching was perfect and i mean perfect, rod and main bearings were brand new looking, and lastly, the the oil pan had no thin film of sediment on it like every other motor I have ever taken apart...
So the question is, which brand and size and compression of pistions would YOU run... Also please offer me any first hand experience that you have had with over sized pistions... Good or bad... You can post up about things you've "heard" from a "friend" but Id really rather have first hand encounters as there is too much bull**** floating around... I appreciate your help guys

what is spec?
You think it was bore/honed and stock pistons reused or something?
I put JE pistons in my ABA 20v build, cost was $540 (6 years ago though) through JRC Motorsports, they had no problems specing them out for what I needed. I told them bore size, aba crank/rods, 20v head, and CR, they did the rest. I dropped compression to 9.0:1, I think stock was 9.5:1?
If you're going through the hassle of new pistons, at the very least bore it out
to 82.5mm, but also seriously consider a 2.0 crank. Now is the time to do it, if you want to do it later, it means new pistons (again)
317ssayzarc
11-24-2007, 06:05 PM
it must have been rehoned bc there is no way the bore wore .002 evenly top to bottom... also shouldve mentioned no ridge at the end of piston travel at the top... somethings definetly up... i would like to stroke it but idk if the extra piston speed will hurt it... i plan on running the motor to the 7600rpm redline written in the Tapp software
317ssayzarc
11-24-2007, 06:08 PM
will all aba cranks work or just obd 1? its an AEB block btw...

how about AEG? the 058 blocks differ from the 06A blocks so I dont know what applies still as far as the vw guys info... lots of stuff about doing it on AWD, AWW and AWP engines but not the external water pump engines...
would the ABA crank clear the block and IM shaft?

Now why in the world would you think it would limit how far you could rev it if you went with the 2 liter crank? I am running 83.5 bore with a ABA crank and rev the hell out of my car ever time I race it at the track, this means running it to 8k+ in nearly ever gear.
In case you haven't seen them before here are a few rpm logs of mine from the track.

Your IM shaft has to be machined and I believe a very small amount needs to be removed from the block in certain places. It's a very small amount of work though, your machine shop wouldn't even think twice about it. You can pick up a forged OBD-I aba crank for around 100 bucks.

Anyone have a rough estimate of how much more it costs to go 2.2 as opposed to 2.0? Issam or Paul?
Additional displacement means the engine doesn't have to spin as fast to move the same amount of air so a bit lower rev limit isn't a big deal.

Cost is going to be higher since you have to buy a 2 liter block and then upgrade to a 95mm stroke crank. It still isn't a full 2 liter since IIRC it is under 2150cc.
Yes that is correct about the displacement, but the question is that does .1-.15 liter more displacment better then being able to rev it another 1,000-1500 rpms. I guess it all depends on what your using the car for, for me I would take the higher revs for drag racing. I guess thats exactly how the EVO guys see it since they tend to stay at 2 liter to run up to 11k rpms vs going to 2.3-2.4 liter and a much lower rev limiter.
onemoremile
11-25-2007, 11:31 AM
The STi guys are split into two camps too. Some go with a 2.8 Crawford block while other go with a JDM 2.2 that can rev like mad. V-Max versus CBR.
The only added advantage to keeping the revs down is the lowered stress on the rods and valvetrain. The water pump, PS pump, and oil pump also do some strange things if spun too fast.

AEB & ATW are the same (058) external water pump block. ATW just has a different head and associated components.

Yeah but anyone running to 11k rpms with a turbo setup is only going to be below 6k rpms if they aren't trying to use any of the power. This is just like saying the K03 is weak above 5500 or the K04 is weak above 6k or the BT setups are weak below 3k. Every setup is going to have their "power band sweet spot" which tends to be about 4k rpms long.

Heated garages with lifts are money.
My buddy and I just finished his lift. Insulation, sheetrock, permanent heat (as opposed to my kerosene heater), lights and a huge air compressor are forthcoming.

hey 317 nice threads man! The one on vortex is alittle better/ more in depth. Im plannin on doin this further down the road but money is a big problem right now.... go figure. Anyways, I had one Q for ya, are you located in RI? Reason im asking is I saw on page 3 on vortex someone suggest to you about a clutch... "you said 400whp...why not get the strongest? talk to rich from dubwerks and he'll be able to help you out. you never know what you might do in the future."
This shop/rich happens to be in the north side of chicago. Coming to MY POINT... dont do anything with this shop!!! They are a joke and F up your ride royally!!!!!!! I know this from pleanty of expierence and getting jerked around with my previous A4's! Ex. they installed a new AEB head on one of my rides and it completely blew up. Or the time they installed a K04 and all the hoses blew off when im on the highway!
Anyways, just lookin out for ya bro. Dont want this glorious project to turn to the worst because of some dumbass mechanics!

126K... why might i ask?
no i was just curious because when all this is said and done, you will in theory have a whole brand new motor.
The reason i was wondering is because if i were in your shoes and my car had lower miles, then i would have waited and did it all at once instead of having to order parts left and right....BUT your car has 126k, so it's time to do it now.
catch my drift?
good luck with the final product

guess ill update you guys a bit... couple of new things came in the last few days... so big reds for the front... some turbo inlet stuff from 034 too, look at the size of those two things! the calipers are enormous and the tubing 4"!!! also hooked up my mocal thermo plate for my oil cooler, had to cut the end off the stock 1/2" -16 piece and cleaned up the threads on the end where the cut was... the stock oil cooler is now gone and the coolant was actually able to be bypassed by using the stock feed hose, rotating it 45 degrees, and feeding it right back into where the return is... like it was meant to be like that! now on to the pics...

i knew they looked too big to be for a standard carrera.. so are those the same size as a 996? could you potentially run the ceramic pads in those? [:D]

well my dad runs has hp plus pads and the sqeal like a bitch... even stock porsche brakes squeal, due to the stupid pad backing things... cant tell you how many customers have come in complaining about their brakes squealing and us telling them its normal lol... so oem textar pads for the street, havent decided on a track compound yet... but definetly getting a track set, they are soooo easy to change out [wrench]

I believe they do look pretty and perform well too. I have 312mm fronts and they are pretty gigantor (calipers are missing the Porsche lettering tho and say Ate instead).
I still can't predict what riding/driving in your A4 will feel like. Going to pull like a NHRA funny car, gonna stop like a porsche and handle like a Lotus (all exaggerations except the Porsche part and maybe Lotus). Buulding a nasty hybrid there.

If you want to stick with a relatively easy build you could add a Tial V-band housing to a Forced Performance HTA35R and end up with a wider and taller powerband than a standard 35R. The compressor inlet is a little longer so you would need to swap exhaust manifolds anyway and I'd definitely go with the stainless V-band turbine housing since it should help widen the powerband even more.

well im sticking with this for now... a twinscroll 30r or a 4088 will be going on this fall, depending on if i keep it roadrace or go drag... either way, the twin scroll will mean no vband turbine inlet [:|]

Only advantage the Tial Vband housing has is weight and 1 bolt to deal with on the vband. I was shown one at Full-race, geoff said that the problems is that built a manifold using the tial and ran into a problem with the collector having to be taller or if it is short it becomes a bad angle. He said he didn't see any difference betteen it and a turbo with a standard flange. I even got a request to have FR build a A4 manifold with one and this was the info I was given even before I made a vist to FR a few weeks ago.
So is the design just hype?

The design is great and proven in other applications but I've been wondering about fitment in a B5 Audi. You just confirmed what I've been worried about and that was getting a proper low angle merge collector in that tight space. The round V-band inlet is slightly more efficient than the standard rectangular turbine inlets and stainless keeps more heat energy going to the turbine. It is a small gain in efficiency but it is a gain nonetheless. When dealing with such small engines every little bit helps.
The twin scrolls also have their problems. The Subey guys swear it makes a big difference even at 300whp on a 2.0 but Tony said it made no appreciable difference on a 1.8t with a 30r. I've got no other real info to go by. The Subey setup mentioned is the JDM STi stock setup. On the Audi I've heard it mentioned that you would need dual wastegates but there may be room for two pipes leading to a remote wastegate. Cracking may be an issue either way though. Wastegates are a bigger issue on a street car running moderate boost than on a drag car running high boost on race gas so the application has a lot to do with it.

Might have been the difference between a equal length twin scroll manifold on the subey vs a non equal length on the 1.8t if your talking about the one used on the Matrix car owned by Issam and used by 034 with the VR6 in it now. I know matrix didn't use a equal length setup since there really hasn't been a equal length twin scroll manifold made at this point and the fact that the exhaust manifold the first tube manifold that issam/034 came out was based on the same design, matrix did use dual wg's on their manifold though.
Yes you can do a Y pipe to a single wg, but at that point it just becomes a single scroll not a twin. The reason why is the fact that the Y allows the pulse to be sucked into the other side while it is in a vacuum state between the 2 pulses. Even Full-race runs into this problem on their Nissan twin scroll using a Y pipe even though their Y pipe is split to the very end where the wg is mounted. Geoff at Full-race explained that even though it is devided, once the WG opens the pulse goes out one side and gets sucked right back into the other side of the devide in the Y pipe. This is why it is best to use 1 wg for each side of the twin scroll so they are never in contact with the other side.
Nissan TS manifold with the Y pipe to a single WG from Full-race
http://www.full-race.com/catalog/images/sr%20divided%20t3.jpg
Room for the WG's shouldn't be a problem if the person doesn't expect to do anything but run open dumps which shouldn't be any louder then or maybe even less then running a open dump single wg.
Geoff even showed me a manifold design they have for a Honda that he things would be work great on the VW's, if the people were willing to have the turbo placed in a different spot then what everyone does now.

Your IM shaft has to be machined and I believe a very small amount needs to be removed from the block in certain places. It's a very small amount of work though, your machine shop wouldn't even think twice about it. You can pick up a forged OBD-I aba crank for around 100 bucks.
where can we find the aba crank the forged obd1

I've got pics of the engine Matrix built for that racecar but it was reported to have 0 miles on it. The manifold was a divided design but they merged 1/2 and 3/4 which seems odd to me.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the email.
Well we have a freshly built (0 mile) 1.8 w/ 9:1 Wiseco’s and Arrow Precision rods, balanced/blueprinted, etc.
Exhaust manifold is custom by us.
Innovative GT58 Dual BB; P Trim; .84 A/R; Tang; V-Band Discharge; Divided; Wet; Dynamic Seal
(Although I think Issam may be buying the EM/turbo/DP).
3.5” SS downpipe
Twin TiAL 35mm High Pressure wastegates; .95bar spring; Red
We never got any drive time on this setup, only pulling the car on/off our trailer for shows while we were initially getting the Electromotive TEC3 setup (we were running on the stock block to start). So, the EM/turbo/DP/WG’s have maybe 8hrs on them.
A few pics are att’d for you.
Best regards,
Jeremy Williams

because adam never got his testing done due to a chaffed cam sensor wire... im not going to be a guinea pig for anything like cams or internals or stuff like that... the 53's are also a little bit milder and since i dont have lemmiwinks available since im ME5, i figured the 53's would have a better shot at idling and the tune matching closer...

I would try them if he is looking for a test car.
I would even be willing to do the HTA upgrade to my GT35r if to see if there really is a difference, but I wont do it with my own money at this point since the GT35r is going to be coming off this summer. Now if someone is looking to buy a used GT35r and wants to do the HTA upgrade to it now then I am more then welling to do it.
It is easy for me to get dyno time, so it wouldn't be hard for me to do a before and after tests on the exact same dyno.

I used to like your old avatar, lol.
are you implying that the engine was not born with high revs should not go high rev?
or our BAT revs to 8.5K is better?
onemoremile
03-08-2008, 09:04 AM
They are two different animals. Airflow is basically displacement times rpm so the big difference is the shape of the powerband. Larger displacement generally has better throttle response, lower boost threshold, quicker spool, and less wear and tear on the rotating assembly and head. Since stress on rotating parts increases with the square of rpm the best longevity usually comes from larger displacement. The problem is that building a 2.2 is expensive, time consuming, and much more difficult than swapping some basic valvetrain parts into a balanced 1.8 or 2.0 and revving the snot out of it.
I'd prefer the larger displacement but the 1.8 is the easy build. It has been demonstrated repeatedly that the 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2 can all rev as high as the head will allow and the 1.8 is capable of amazing power given it's size. Still, take any 1.8 setup and move it to a 2.0 or 2.2 and it only gets better.

what do you and other guys think of putting a A'PEXI super grounding system in. I have read this several times. It smooths the electric charge at higher RPM which it will give a smoother power and torque curve. do you think it is feasible on our cars since that A'PEXI is widely used in Japanese tuner cars. ^^^lol. Insurance check came in already after battling for two months. instead of paint im using it to increase the count on BAT population, and then by the end of the summer another check should be coming in from the Army and that will go towards the paint job.
