i was looking at the prices and the msrp for the s4 is about $48,500 compared to the s5 which is around 50k. Such a little price difference will make everyone who wanted to get an s4 to choose a s5 now. yes no?

I would choose the S5 just because the B7 S4 are slow

The S5 is a newer design inside and out where the B7 S4 has a 3 year old exterior and an interior essentially dating back to fall 2001 when the 02 B6 A4s began production. For the money the S5 is a much more modern car.

It is also a sleeker 2 door body which will appeal to many enthusiasts who would want an S4, but really don't need 4 doors. The S5 is also 275lbs lighter and slightly more powerful which makes the S5 faster for the speed freaks..even if its only a few 10ths of a second.

My choice would be S5 over the B7 or upcoming B8 S4. The coupe is just plain sexy, and I don't really need 4 doors.

the only reason i am going with an s4 is because the s5 is too expensive...not really what you were asking...

b6 s4 ftw.

if i had the money i would go s5. i would pony up for the slight premium for a new s5 over a new s4 whatever it is...i don't like the b7 anyway.

People are just enamored with the "new" A5/S5, simply because it's a new model.
However, a stylish coupe is not a 4 door sport sedan.
If you need a 4 door you go with a 4 door, not a couple regardless.

Even with the BMW 3 series, sedan buyers buy sedans, and coupe buyers buy coupes. Most of the sedan owners on these pages rave about the new A5, but most will not be replacing their sedans with a coupe. Some will, most won't.

I like the new coupe because of how well it bodes for the new A4.
I'm single so a coupe could work for me, but I still prefer the carrying capacity of a sedan, and I'm not a fan of the long heavy doors of a coupe.

The biggest reason why I won't get the coupe though is the price and the lack of a 2.0T quattro. I don't want to spend more for the V6 as I don't see it's power worthy of the price. The "new" 2.0T FSI that will be in the B8 will have a bit more HP and a decent boost in torque.
For me, the V6 is not enough for the cost.
If Audi brings an A5 2.0T quattro, I'll seriously look at the coupe then.
For now, I'm looking forward for the new A4. [up]

uhm, i dont think I will have the money to purchase the S5 or even the A5 brand new. Will wait a bit to see more then probably purchase a used A5 with some premium options.... ways to go college people lol

IMO, A4 & A5 both are meant for singles. I drive the A4 and whenever i'm taking my family with me, the car feels like it need a ton more power to get moving + some extra rear seat space (the feeling gets worse when you normally drive the family in a different most of the time and randomly do that with an A4occasionally). As long as the trunk is big enough then there's no difference between the A4 and A5 except on how i will have to pack ppl up on the car.

I seriously thought the last sentence about the trunk being big enough was going to end with a solution for where to put your kids [;)]

B8 S4, Cant wait.
I like the S5 but the only thing that I hate about the car is the S5 rear badge, the trunk is inward, so the badge is as well.

S4 vs S5 is still a tough decision for some people, based on the practicality. The reps from our factory come over every month or so, and its much easier getting in a S4 vs S5. So its a tough choice for me because the S4 interior is so... 2002? The next logical choice would be the S6 or M5.

I had to drop my B7 Avant off for a paint repair and I was offered the chance to borrow their S5 for a few days. All I can say is WOW! This car is awesome. Forget the B7 S4 this car is faster...and much more fun to drive. That is all :)

Easy -- You have the B8 chassis and interior vs the B7 that's been around since 05.5

It's really no contest.

Heck, the B7 chassis has actually been around longer than that cause the B7 was still the same basic chassis and driveline setup with some added suspension tweaks and engine upgrades.
Overall, the B7 should have been B6.5? [:D]

The B8 is a whole NEW chassis, completely different, not a tweaked version.

I agree, not contest.

A5 starts at 39,900, and the S5 starts at 50,500, not including 1300 worth of gas guzzler tax

Personally I'd hold for the B8 s4 to drop; I couldn't have a sunroof that didn't slide open, so the s5 woudln't please me, I like having 4 doors, so the s4 would win that argument, but the b8 is rumored to go back to FI, which makes me smile. The only other logical choice would be the 335xi/i; and I cannot stand the coupe version of that car, and i'm already tired of the body style of the sedan now.

xi is a joke: They have to raise the car almost an inch to fit the (poor) AWD system to the car which throws off the wieght distribution and ruins the handling of the vehicle. Awful

Its going to be the S4 for me, I like it , always have and I like the 4 doors. It is a little more functional for my 3 person family. I was pretty sure the S5 was starting around 60k not 50k, the demo at my dealership is closer to 70k I think. Darn cool though, I am going to wait and see the A5 before I get the S4. Just to be sure :)

You are probably not alone - I think many people will go for the S4 (over the S5) when it arrives next year. With a twin-turbo FSI V6 and all of the new Quattro hardware (Torque-vectoring) it makes sense. The S5 is still using the old stuff and tunability doesn't compare to what the S4 will have. I'll likely be trading in my S5 sooner than I thought .

I may be the only one...but I am not in love with the S5. Oh, I like it but its a 2 door coupe with a great engine. I am picking up a B7 S4 loaded. I would much rather have 4 doors and the room in case I need it. I am trading in my Porsche 911.

Give the S5 a year, let it take the hit then pick it up. I saw several in person in Dallas, TX. Its nice but I wasnt...in love. The LED lights were awesome...but im sure a kit will come out with that...

my father is considering getting the S5 over a Viper.
We test drove it, i love it over the new S's and over B5's
The viper is a disgusting waste of power.
and this is such a beautiful ride.
id take it over an S4 any day.
