View Full Version : Those of you looking for another intake

Hello all, this is my first post on here. But ive been searching and reading up a lot on here. Great info.
With that said, i would also like to say that after seeing many posts of intakes/carbonio/prices/etc. i went ahead and just made my own, call me cheap, but there is no way in hell im going to pay almost 400 dollars for an intake. now for those of you looking for the sound.....i think this is it. i managed to remove the stock intake hose and box and use an extra pipe i had laying around. to be honest i was going more for that turbo spooling/ "pshhh" noise, so needless to say im very happy with the results. now ive never heard the carbonio in real life so i cant really say if this is louder or not, but im thinking it is since its just an open cone filter.
Now those of you looking for performance...your probably not interested. cause im not gonna lie, i drove it around and the intake pipe was daaaaamn hot. so yea im not gonna do any dyno runs or anything like that im sure you all know i'm probably losing power if anything. im gonna continue working with my buddy to see if we can make a heat shield or something.
The only reason i really did this is cause i've yet to see anyone do it. all i see is the people that have the carbonio or the people who complain about carbonio and have nothing... I will post pictures tomorrow if anyone is interested.

I know Simota also has a CAI for our B7, but do not know about the price.

here is one I might try
BSR intake.....there is a local dealer here in town....not sure how much it would cost in US$ but heck it might be better than the carbonio

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, but anyway here's what i did.

I left that stock plastic piece to get some type of "cold" air to the filter. ha looks crappy and was done in about 45 min. but i got what i wanted from it. i did it mostly cause of the overpriced carbonio and the fact that everyone cries about how expensive it is, yet no one does anything about it. Let me know what you guys think
scotts07
09-30-2007, 08:19 AM
that looks just like BSR's intake minus the heatshield...... having the filter open that close to the turbo and CAT I would want some type of heatshield.....
Josh_877
09-30-2007, 08:21 AM
yea i know what you mean and like i said when i drove it around and then popped the hood, it was very hot. I'm gonna see if i can make some type of heat shield for it, im sure it would help.

did you really notice any performance response? the intercooler cools the intake temps since whatever air being sucked in is heated by the hot turbo anyways. im not an expert but that is what i have read on these forums. i too have gone this route and honestly, i dont feel any difference at all in throttle response. but the sound which is what the goal was is PERFECT! personally, i really enjoy hearing the turbo spool and the DV letting up and this open cone setup fits the bill.
00black1.8t and inferno are planning to fit a "proven" true heatshield for our b7s. i am looking forward to adding that to my setup.

power gains, none, maybe its just my mind thinking that im losing power do to such heat, but whatever. did you do hard pipe or did you use the existing rubber one to attach the MAF to? i used an old intake pipe i had laying around from my previous car and cut it.

i used the existing rubber inlet hose. unfortunately i didn't have any spare parts lying around.

36 HP gain @ 4000 RPM from an intake, hm? Maybe on the "Before" run they used a piece of masking tape for an air filter. That's the most misleading dyno graph I've ever seen, esp. with only 3 points sampled. [rolleyes]
Evolution Motorsports also sells a B7 intake that looks pretty well engineered: http://www.evoms.com/marketplace/ViewProduct.asp?Now=9%2F30%2F2007+3%3A37%3A47+PM&ProductID=%7BD58BD27C%2DCBCC%2D4EAC%2DA935%2D5427B 153900A%7D&OrgID=%7BCA5E16BC%2DD877%2D4137%2D8237%2D7EB9084DD 3D8%7D&ParentID=%7B980E023A%2D653D%2D4FC8%2D8810%2D0B21FB 42491E%7D&Curr=%7B980E023A%2D653D%2D4FC8%2D8810%2D0B21FB4249 1E%7D

Simota makes some good intakes, but not 36 hp good. My friend has it on his e90 330i and its incredibly well made and sealed. My Carbonio is already yellow and his simota is still fine. (15k on the carbonio and 35K on the BMW )

HEY JOSH_877,
I woke up this morning and read your post. Well, you encouraged me to do the same mod...
You just cost me $26 today when HID and I did the Cone filter only mod.
I bought a K&N style cone filter and HID installed it in a matter of 15 minutes.
The outcome................
SOUND
SOUND
SOUND
My impression..............
If you want a cool sound, DO IT.
PS...I will cut out a cardboard template for a heatshield and then fabricate an aluminum version and powdercoat it some crazy color possibly.

Is it possible to somehow route the conefilter to take in air directly from the outside? Like have it suck in air from the bottom right hand side of the bumper? where the foglight is? Or anything similar to that fashion, Instead of having it suck in air from the engine bay?

Simota is a Taiwan brand...So I thought I could go to some Taiwan Audi Forum and get some info about this intake. People do not say a lot of things about its performance but its sound. They said the intake sounds like a bull (I was laughing when I saw that). However, no one actually have good impression on the Simota.

Good looking out. Simota actually doesn't look like such a bad intake. The whole "ram air" inlet looks larger, the filter is contained in a sealed box, and the factory heat shield is extended upward. I checked their website but couldn't find any lists of distributors, etc. Who sells these in the US?

36 HP sounds very optimistic. however remember when adding mods to a non-chipped car the gains are substantial. e.g. adding test pipe gave about 30hp also, but when adding to a chipped car the gains are minimal.
The reason is that the ecu can adapt itself to the increased air flow therefore it can increase hp. But AFAIK not 36hp worth.

I thought my carbonio was loud, but that thing is out of control
well that cleared up my question, i was wondering if it was as loud or louder than the carbonio. i saw vids of the carbonio and i was always just like "eh, you cant hear it" but then i tried also taking vids and sound clips of mine and it doesnt really come out all that good.
now my other question is....is mine louder considering i have a thin metal intake pipe instead of that rubber stock one that connectes from the turbo to the MAF???
Can anybody post any good sound clips? i tried in car and engine bay but all i can hear is the engine revving. if you listen closely you can hear the DV, but the clips just dont do it justice to how loud this thing is. haha [:D]

Sup man.
YES, I have the FORGE DV with the open cone mod.
I'm not sure of the sound difference between OEM and FORGE, probably not drastic.
Funny story though, I complained to HID about my boost levels being inconsistent at times, dipping and spiking. We checked my PCV Valve by taking it off, cleaning it and BLOWING AIR into one side of it. HID informed me that when you blow air into one end there should be a flap closed to not let air OUT. Well, mine was open all the time letting air escape. HID happened to have a spare PCV valve in the garage, so we bolted it on and I was good to go.[up]

so this thread inspired me to look for a heatshield for our car, even though i have not found a specific aluminum heat shield for our car I found this website heatshieldproducts.com and i emailed them about our car, this is what the response was
We don’t have model specific heat shields at this ti9me. You should look into some sleeving for your air intake http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/heat_shield_loom.php
And some tape to line your box with.
http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/heat_shield_tape.php
Both can be ordered by locating a dealer here.
http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/dealers.php
does any1 have any thoughts or comments about this? will heat shielding just ur pipe actually cool down the air? or do we need a conventional heat shield (something obvious) to block the actual cone filter from the rest of the engine bay to cool down the air

Thanks bro.
I think I will buy some Inconel Heat Sheets to play around with.
It looks like you can bend and cut them to fit. IF need be, I can join 2 sheets together and trim to fit. We'll see...They also make the jackets that go around the HOT side of the turbo!!!

Honestly that BSR heat shield just seems like a "peace of mind" purchase. The reason i say that is cause im pretty sure something like that will not help that much especially with how hot the engine bay gets in that little area. if it were to do something im sure it wont even be noticable, dyno wise or driving wise... now im not sure, but thats just what i think. But by all means go ahead and purchase that and let us know how it goes! like i said though i just went the cheapest and easiest route [:D]

Let it be noted that the BSR is an open top style box, hot air will most likely make its way into the chamber. I would bet this one would give you the loudest sound if thats what you are looking for.
The LLTEK is a closed chamber CAI like the carbino. I am not sure how good carbon fiber is at reflecting heat away. I would opt for the LLTEK and coat it with something like this:

Or This:

Bringing this one back from the dead. I was just thinking wouldn't it be a good idea for an aftermarket CAI solution, or homemade, to upgrade the Ram Air Scoop? Wouldn't that direct MORE cold air to the intake or am I missing something, like a larger ram intake collecting more outside debris (more bees, twigs, leaves, etc.)

I originally put a cone filter right on the MAFS, and yeah, its loud, but definately noticed a loss in power at the higher end immediately. Also, I've heard that an oil filter that close to the MAFS can do damage, since some oil may get on it, so be careful if you use K & N. Carbonio is what I have now, and I'm happy. Someday, I hope to have FMIC and a true CAI in the bumper.
