View Full Version : How the hell did you people change your city bulbs?

I managed to replace my main halogen headlight bulbs with whiter, brighter silverstars - my city lights now look extra-terrible. I'm pretty sure you open the smaller black "cap" to gain access but damn, how did you guys manage to squeeze your hands in there, and change out the bulbs?

Any tips? I don't have huge hands and I really don't feel like paying 30 min. labor to get them installed at the stealership.

Oh, and any city light bulb recommendations? I saw the Hoens but they look very, very dim. I'm trying to avoid LEDs because I have no idea how to circuit them to not throw off a bulb-out warning.

Nah, I was just struggling with the same shit like 30 min ago. SQUEEZE them then pull. I got these, chrome super whites.

This is serious fucking bullshit. I have been trying to change my fog bulbs for like 45 min. I refuse to pull off the bumper. How did you guys do it? do you have Alien arms? I got small arms but the amount of time and frustration of just changing bulbs in my car is BS. I will not buy another Audi because the bulbs are too hard too change. I think it is bullshit that the dealer makes it so hard so they get to charge you at the stealership.

I hope your reading this Audi!!!

Really?
You would not buy a car from the same company again b/c they make fog lights hard to change?
I know you are frustrated, and we have all been there when working on cars, but to swear off a company b/c of a light bulb change?

Now having to have a special tool to change the oil without making a mess is another story [confused]

Are you trying to change the fog lights or the city lights?

If you are working on the fogs, do you have an Sline or non Sline?

City light instructions have been posted above.

Yup, basically... I think we've only tried once to try doing them without removing the bumper and even with a lift its a major PITA... it only takes about 15 mins to remove the bumper anyhow...

Fogs, non s-line. impossible to change.

Indeed. I tried the squeeze-your-hand-in and hope for the best method and the only thing that accomplished was several scratches to my forearms

I'm caving in and having the dealer install them tomorrow morning.. along with the city bulbs

Not that hard to take off two wheels, remove a dozen or so screws and pull the bumper off. I did it in an hour. You just have to have the right tools. 10mil and extention, torx set, etc...

i dont even bother taking off the wheels lol

soooo when I went to have my fogs/city lights installed this past weekend at the dealership I came across some problems..

First, they were going to charge me $200 to put in my fogs because they would have to have taken off the bumper, the IC's etc. so I told them not to worry about it.

Then, I told the guy that I wanted him to replace my city lights and gave him the bulbs.. He said that was fine and I went to pick up the car and checked everything out and he installed the bulbs in my sidemarkers [mad]

Is the bulb that I have the arrow pointing to not the city light with a W5W bulb [confused]

Did you tell them about this?

James@Creative

Yes, the arrow is pointed to the city light, the 1157 bulb is your DRL, and of course you have your xenons.

BTW we 6000k and 8000k D1S bulbs have finally arrived if anyone is interested.

Did you tell them about this?

I did not... since it was a Saturday, the service area was only open until 11am. I couldn't get back there until noon and had to have one of the salesmen get my keys for me. At that point, there was nothing more that I could do and I really did not care.

I'll just order another set and have them installed when I get chipped.

The fog lights don't screw in... hopefully you know that.

I have non s-line and didn't have any trouble. Once you can get your hand on the ballast, twist to the left and it will unlock, and pull it out.

Is this clockwise or counter?

Thanks

Also, Did you do it from the top of the little bar or under? My hands and arms got all cut up the other day when I tried.

Are you somehow unable to undertsand the concept of left and right? Left = counter...

Ok.. I just finished changing out the DRL bulb after struggling for about 30 minutes pulling and twisting and ready to give up. After taking a closer look at which way to turn. If you're looking at the headlight directly you turn clockwise and if you're looking through the opening of the housing counter-clockwise. It can be done. I used a small pair of pliers to help turn.

This thread is hilarious.

I'm never buying another Audi AGAIN!!!!!

I mean I have to expend effort to change bulbs! Unacceptable!!!

.....

In seriousness, it does suck you have to remove the bumper to take the headlights out, unlike the b6 in which removing the headlights takes all of 2 minutes, but still, its HARDLY the worst thing in the world...

My old old Saab 9-3 used to require a bumper pull to replace the fog bulbs, and those burned out on a yearly basis even if you barely used them...
