Actually the car was originally set for November/December delivery, but it was delayed, and is now set for December/January release. I know this because Biener Audi (N.Y. largest dealer) told me. I am number 1 on the order list. Car takes 3 months to make from date of order, and I am still yet to place an order. Also starting price is expected at or around 40 thousand.

An A5 will probably be in the same base price as a 335i, but the 335i has higher performance closer to an S5.

Recent info show the V6 A5 to start in the lower $40's.
The base 335i is $41,575.
Equipping the 335i with heated leather, sunroof (not available on the A5/S5), bluetooth, Prologic7 audio (great sound), and other niceties (No Nav), puts the price at about $45,725 nicely equipped.

The A5 will should cost around there, but the S5 is said to start in the lower $50's, ouch.

It's alluring, but I want a lower cost 2.0T version to compete with the
328i coupe and G37.

Maybe Audi is rethinking the engines and power output compared to the price point. Turbo 3.2 V6 at 300hp? That would beshaaaweeet, though unlikely.

It ain't you. [:p]

Initial sales will be good as the car looks amazing.
Sustaining sales in this market segment will be a good question as Audi tries to bring in later buyers, especially performance buyers.
The price point is pretty high unless Audi brings more power.
I still think Audi can help itself here by offering a 2.0T version to bring it more in line with BMW's offerings especially the higher selling 328 version.

It looks like Audi is targeting the performance buyers up front, as sales for the first 4-5 months will only be the manual-trans S5, followed by the A5 and S5 tip. Selling the S5 on looks and performance will be their best chance of building up sales momentum. Sustaining sales, as well as converting people to the Audi brand (especially from BMW), will be the difficult thing.

Not to mention, when interest rates fall and the dollar drops even more, Audi may struggle to keep the prices at $50K!
