I did my oil change the other day and went from Mobile1 10w30 to Royal Purple 5w30. Before, after sitting for a few hours it would have a little valve tap for about a second then go away. Now it does it after sitting for about 10 minutes and it's louder. Should I go to a thicker oil? The oil temp is also running higher than the previous weight oil. I'm driving to Oregon Friday and will be putting about 1,000 miles on the car.
It's been between 90-100* up here and I drive a steep grade everyday.

I'm just curious because now with the 5w30 the oil runs hotter (1 bar higher on the gauge) and the rockers clack for a second or 2 after only sitting for about 10-15 minutes where as before it would only do it after sitting for a few hours. I'm thinking the thinner oil is leaving the head faster but there again, I'm not an oil expert.

Why does everyone want to re-invent the wheel??? LOL :P

Just use Pentosin = OE = GREAT!! 5w40 is what the engine manufacturer decided the engine needed. Took all of the valve noise away, all of the time!

You can run anything from 5w30 to20w50 in the 2.8

A 5w is thinner below 100c than a 10w...

I am running Mobil1 10w-30 and I get no noises ... but I do find that I need to top up half a liter to a liter of oil every 2-3 thousand kms to ... is that normal?

I just drained the 5w30 Royal Purple that I had in it for 2 days and put in Royal Purple 15w40 and it's much better. It's noticebly thicker but not bad at all. The 5w30 looked like grape juice it was so thin. The car seems to run smoother with the thicker oil in it. It didn't get as hot as the 5w30.

A thicker oil doesn't mean better protection. Why did you just waste $30 draining perfectly good oil out? It's not going to hurt anything...

Well the noise is gone now and and it's not getting as hot so I'm happy.

i'm running Mobil 1 0w40 right now and i might have just a tiny bit of valve knocking but it's hard to even tell. sounds ok to me. it does run just a bit higher than the 5w40 i had in before.
