I have noticed a lot of questions about headlight upgrade options, and I have a few questions myself. Here is my understanding, please step in and correct me if I am wrong.

~ Most of the headlights you find on eBay (except Depo and Valeo) will melt if you upgrade to HID
~ The projector lenses found in the ecode headlights made by Depo and Valeo have a better cut off and are a noticeable improvement over US projectors.
~ The only way to maintain a completely OE ecode HID upgrade is to buy the S4 housings which range from $580-$650 depending on where you buy them.
~ The auto leveling motor that is usually on the Xenon S4 ecodes will not work unless the your car was already equipped with self leveling lights.
~ HID kits will ONLY work with post facelift and aftermarket headlight housings.
~ If you are upgrading to HID and not using housings that were originally equipped with HID you will need to get an aftermarket kit that corresponds with the size of halogen bulb you were using (generally H7

Now my question:
What is the cutoff difference between the Halogen and Xenon ecodes?
Do the depo ecodes found on eBay have glass lenses like the Valeo OE housings?
Is Xenon expert the accepted standard for high quality upgrade kits, or is it Xenoflo from Audmods?

i can only comment on a few things. some a4's came with xenons, so i dont think you need s4 housings.

i have a 97 with xenons, you will need the headlight assembly, ballasts, wiring, etc. from a post facelift car, as well as to trim the fenders to make them fit.

thats all i know, lol.

1. Most of the headlights you find on eBay (except Depo and Valeo) will melt if you upgrade to HID
2. The projector lenses found in the ecode headlights made by Depo and Valeo have a better cut off and are a noticeable improvement over US projectors.
3. The only way to maintain a completely OE ecode HID upgrade is to buy the S4 housings which range from $580-$650 depending on where you buy them.
4. The auto leveling motor that is usually on the Xenon S4 ecodes will not work unless the your car was already equipped with self leveling lights.
5. HID kits will ONLY work with post facelift and aftermarket headlight housings.
6. If you are upgrading to HID and not using housings that were originally equipped with HID you will need to get an aftermarket kit that corresponds with the size of halogen bulb you were using (generally H7

Now my question:
7. What is the cutoff difference between the Halogen and Xenon ecodes?
8. Do the depo ecodes found on eBay have glass lenses like the Valeo OE housings?
9. Is Xenon expert the accepted standard for high quality upgrade kits, or is it Xenoflo from Audmods?

1. Only the headlights with angel eyes will melt, other brands with projectors won't.
2. yes, the cut off is more aggressive.
3. Yes, but a4 halgen housings will just look the same with aftermarket hid.
4. A leveling kit will come with an OEM hid Kit
5. Hid kits work with all headlights, non projector headlights will just blind other drivers.
6. Yes, you need to run the correct bulb type with the housings
7. There is no difference, just a lot brighter.
8. not sure, but probably
9. OEM is always the highest quality, high quality kits just means they'll last longer.

ps. next time number your questions instead of using ~'s :]

I was only intending 7 - 9 as questions. I am trying to accumulate a large sum of information on HID in just this one thread, hopefully to get a sticky and clean up some of the common questions that come up.

And to clarify, I should look into a set of halogen ecodes and get an aftermarket HID kit, rather than spending $1600 on a complete OE ecode setup.

I just ordered a 55w kit (H7) from Xenonexperts. Shipped from San Diego to Boston in 4 days. Inspected the kit, looks real very nice. I also have the a4 e-codes that I bought from AWE, and I will try and snap you some photos soon.

^ yes. You are correct. They are the S4 ecodes. The rest came from eBay.

Actually, ECS is the cheapest I have found($439/579), followed by Achtuning($440/650), and then AWE($449/650). You can get the halogen ecodes made by Depo for $250 from eBay.
