Hi just signed up and need some help. I bought a 1990 audi 200 turbo AWD wagon for $500 about 3 months ago. I have all the papers on what has been done to the car since 1999 which includes a new used egine at 170K and know has 213K. When i got the car it only need rear brakes and a strut. The first time i drove the car it seemed really slow for it being turbo. So when i got the car home i replaced the fuel filter, air filter and plugs. After i did all this the car still seems slow. What i mean is when you give the car 3/4 to full throtle there isnt much differance. At about 4200 rpm the car stops pulling and continues to rev but has no power. I know that its not a sports car but still think it should go better than what it does. It does need a new intake hose the one that goes to the air box. There is no check engine light on or anything that sticks out that could be broken. Could the turbo be bad? When i did the air filter there was alot of oil in the intake hoses. Well i was in there I took the hose off of the turbo and did notice some play in the shaft. I am stumped and i really like the car and want to keep it and make it faster someday. So if anyone has any ideas i would like to hear.
thanks

definately sounds like a blown turbo, hence the cheap price. The good news is that itsa inline-5 engine and easy to get to the turbo. And you can lay down some serious hp with a turbo upgrade.
Too bad itsa 1990 and not a 1991, you missed out on a quattro 20v turbo engined car by 1 year.

Now that i know about the 20vt i was thinking of selling my car and getting one but dont have the money. Today i will pick up a boost gauge hook it up and see what im getting for boost. Where can i get a turbo for my car? sould i get stock or something else? The car is in really good shape other than the no power strut and now exhaust manifold gasket. thanks for the reply

for aftermarket turbos check out 2bennett or 034EFI.com
for OEM you can get one from a dealer, or try and find a good used one at a pick and pull

check for boost leaks first..... you say it needs an intake hose, are you talking about the turbo inlet pipe?
Mine was cracked, i found a way to patch it up temporarily and car pulls harder than .when i first got it. so maybe start that direction first..

The top hose on the air box and the other hoses look good. I just put in boost gauge today and it says its putting out 5 to 6 psi. What is the stock turbo supposed to put out?

well i found out that the stock turbo should put out about 12 psi. Mine is putting out 5 to 6 psi and its not steady. Could the turbo be junk or is it something else?

Take off the intake pipe and try to spin the impeller blade. Should spin freely. Also check for shaft play.

it has shaft play i know that and i think it spins freely

Well how bad is the shaft play? up and down and in and out.

i think it is mostly in and out but when you rev the car you can hear something like worn out bearings. I think ist coming from the turbo. It happens at higher RPMs.

Well ive got a new problem! I think the clutch is going. Was driving it and now the clutch engages almost at the floor. If you rest ur foot on the clutch pedal you can feel it vibrating.
