Has anyone successfully ordered a tight-radius U-Bend from a vendor online to be used in a custom intake? I see lots of listings for them on the usual speed shops (JEGS, Summitt, etc.) but they all seem like they will be too big (12" across). I know in order to fit one in our little spot we need something like 8 or 9 inches from side to side.

If anyone has ordered one online, I'd love to know where and what part # (as I'm sure a bunch of other folks would too).

"Any muffler shop should have one" isn't working for me because I seem to have only chain shops around me that don't really get too involved with mandrel bent anything or too much customization.

Thanks.

You can get one from your local muffler shop for about $35-40

A 2.5" mandrel bent U has an outside to outside diameter of 9.5" and it fits just fine and it's just a regular U, not a tight radius.

2.5" is OK? Just for kicks, I put together something with a 2" PVC U-Bend last night. Now I know that PVC is not the material to use, but I just wanted to mock something up. The 2" seems to be a severe restriction. I am definitely not boosting what I was with just the filter on the MAF. I'll give the local Meineke a call and see if they happen to have the mandrel bent one in stock, but I'm not too optimistic.

My local muffler shop didn't have it in stock either but they were able to order it and I had it in two days. You might have to check a few shops to see if someone has one in stock but I would just order it and save the time.

tighest bend you are going to get on a u-bend is r (of bend) = 1.5 X D (of pipe)

the best way to get a super tight bend with a 1:1 r:d is either two 90s which can be done 1:1 or a donut.

Well the local guy didn't have any and couldn't get any...

I'm looking at this: http://store.racing-solutions.org/3mist180de4r.html

I emailed them to get more size information and the return was:
'5" between legs, with 6" leg lengths'

If that pipe is 3" in diameter, that makes for 11" from side to side - sounds too big to me. They also have a 2.5" pipe that should be smaller.

Fred - 2.5" is OK for you? I switched back to straight filter on MAF at lunch time and the difference from that vs. 2" U-Bend was night and day.

2.5" worked just fine with no problems. I am working on a 3" version but I had to have the pipe cut and sectioned so we'll see how that comes out. The picture I posted above is of the 2.5" piping so as you can see there is plenty of room.

I used this....

Did the same intake Fred came up with, but with a larger filter (NOT recommended due to the extreme lack of space)

whats good about having a u-bend? why not just put the filter on the MAF? does it smooth out the flow or something?

There we go! That's what I was looking for - a specific piece out there that has been proven to work. I'll have to see if he has any more in other auctions.

Edit: He has a ton of them.

Thanks - My only thing was that in searching the internet and various vendors for days, it seems as though no one is consistent in how they measure or notate radius, etc. So one guy's pipe is not the same as the next.

I didn't want to blindly start ordering things - although I was about to. I ended up getting the exact same pipe that JumboBlack1.8 posted by copying and pasting the item description into an Ebay search and using the same vendor.

ahh gotcha, yeah thats the other reason i didnt post it at first, I saw that you were looking for that measurement and the ebay vendor didnt have it..

there should be at least 5 inches of straight pipe between the maf and filter for the best readings, a U bend allows us the room to accomplish this in our sardine can of a engine bay

right on, thanks

so do you guys think a 3" will fit? the 2.5" is 9.5'' across while this 3" is 10.5". is there room for that extra inch?
