how long have you had the car?
How often did you change your oil?

Drop your engine in a solvent tank [:)]

But seriously, could something like this help? http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/aef.aspx

Also looks like there are machines that pump solvents through the engine at 40psi to break down the sludge and buildup.

i bought the car as-is, not sure on the miles ill check those tomorrow.

so far orderd parts are:

cam chain/tensioner
head gasket set (with intake/exh/valve cover/valve seals ect..)
new PCV breather tube
headbolts
oil pump

now i gotta find some chemicles that will clean up the sludge so it dont happen again

would it be safe to powerwash anything in there?

Perform a Kerosene flush on it and later use ATF fluid 10 mins before each oil change and your engine will never see that sludge again.
The engine in the pic has been neglected and probably has never seen 3k mile oil changes.
