Daily driver 2.8
Modability 1.8t... More fun than the 2.8 yet less reliable...

2.8, you get the chrome window trims duh! But really 1.8t if you treat it right it can be just as reliable. Good luck with your choice either way its an Audi, win win situation.

1.8t.. more fun, easier and cheaper to mod, lighter, doesn't have the chrome window trim :)...

I've owned both cars, both 98's, I had more problems with the 2.8 that was NOT modded its entire life, then the 1.8t I own now that has been modded almost from day one out of the dealership.

good luck...

Like Beemer832 I have owned both and the my 97 2.8 was modified with a Supercharger but before the mods I did have a few problems nothing to major but I would say for modifying go with the 1.8T as it's cheaper to run and loads of mods on the shelf to do what ever you want power wise.

I've had both and modified both, the 2.8 is slow, and the 1.8t has been just as reliable if not more so (them again it is newer, but w/ more miles)

I vote 1.8t 100%

keep up meaning neck to neck or keep up as in only 8 cars lentghs?
It's gonna take a good amount of dollars and mods to "keep up" with todays sports cars.

You don't want to get a 2.8 if that's your goal.

If by todays performance cars you mean evos and STI's, it'll take couple thousand dollars just into the engine to get there. That's if you're talking straight line. To keep up with them in the corners is a bit less though.

the 2.8s are fun and quick, but not even remotely fast. its not that hard to make a 1.8t into a very quick car. 2500 bucks gets you k04ed with a universal exhaust, in the 250hp range. my 2.8 sport suspention car handles well (idk if 1.8ts can have factory sport suspentions though) for a what it is, but H&R coils and H bar sway bars are supossed to provide great handling.

as far as reliablity, weve sold alot of 1.8t cars and the only one that had a problem kooked a turbo due to a broken oil pump shaft.

stay away from 1.8t Tips. very very slow.

heres my recomendation: if your only going to do very basic (or no) mods and dont want to mess with digging into your engine, 2.8. if you arent afraid to get your hands dirty alittle, the 1.8t is the way to go.

i chose the 2.8 becasue im saving for an S4, so it didnt make sense for me to put alot of money into my car.

Maybe I am late. :) I have an '00 1.8t Q-Tip and she has an '01 2.8 Q-Tip both have sport suspensions. She has leather, sport seats (yes the S4 seats factory special order) otherwise all the other optiions are the same.
Her car was way more fun to drive than mine until I upgraded mine. Until I chipped it it was a dog. Chipped it was nice, then with the remainder of the mods below it is fun and she will end up taking my car frequently.
The 1.8t is not as smooth as the 2.8 nor as quiet and requires more maintainence but it is now much faster and more fun to drive with about the same mpg's as her 2.8

I can't agree with EURO MORE. I have also owned a 2.8L a4 and it was worthless slow POS and was breaking every other week.

I have got my new car 1.8T 1999 a4 almost 1 year and it has been 100% FLAWLESS!!!

130K miles no check engine lights, oil change every 2500k miles

go with 1.8t

And in the first 2 years of me owning my 1.8t ... It spent about 6 weeks total at the dealership for replacement of, trans, PS rack, PS pump, ECU, TCU, instument cluster, blower motor, stereo, Kombi valve, downpipe, and more. I laughed at it simply because under the CPO warranty they paid more to repair the car than I actually paid for the car. 2 years now since the CPO warranty ended and the car has been faultless. The 2.8 we ordered, and the only things we have had with that was a couple oil seals, stereo, CD changer, and instrument cluster.

$50 per visit deductible * 5 trips = $250 for all of the work. The bills from what I tracked of them were over $15k

Lets see... My 01 1.8 and 2.8 in comparrison...

1.8t -
New tranny
New 710
02 sensors
MAF x8 already
Wheel bearings
CV Joints
Transmission seals all the way around
New oil cooler
Oil pressure sensor
Coolant flange
Coolant temp sensor
Shift linkage
Clutch
Flywheel
A/C crapped out twice
Tie rods
New ECU
Window regulator
A/C tensioner x2

2.8...
Tie rods and CV boot (x1)
ONLY two things that have gone wrong since owning the car basicly brand new...

Both were 2001's both roughly the same mileage, both driven the same... 100k miles on both... Yet I still traded the 2.8 in for a new Magnum!! Hahaha...

Oh yeah I forgot about the 4 rear wheel bearings now that you mentioned it. Yes one was replaced 3 times. And the tie-rod ends, and rear diff seals. Still more missing and at 86k miles I am planning on the control arms (one is just starting to clunk)
