any one know how hard it is to change stearing rack for a 97 2.8 a6? and where to get a new stearing rack, new or used? is it the same from a a4?

They are pretty difficult and no they aren't the same...

I just did mine. it requires some patience but it saved me a few hundred bucks. I don't believe they are the same. find a local shop to get yours rebuilt or hit up a salvage yard

i did mine and it was cake. only took like 2 hours if that. the A6 should be the same process as the A4. but the racks wont be the same of course.

i got mine here, http://www.carsteering.com (http://www.carsteering.com), it is a rebuilt rack that is basically brand new. saved me probably $500 over what the dealer wanted for the same rack.

rack replacement requires wheel alignment I assume, right?
I have to do mine.

thanks

I didn't have to do my alignment because I was careful and counted the turns of the tie rods when I removed them... I got it check and it was dead on... This isn't to say that you will have the same luck I did though...

exact same thing i did. i counted like 22 or 21 turns for each side and installed them back just like that. when i took it over to get aligned it was dead on. this doesn't happen very often so you should get an alignment after you change it out

what you should do is take off the tie rods as an assembly with both inner and outer tierods attached together with out moving the lock nut. Thats how i did mine.
