View Full Version : Getting rid of the dreaded thud...

Alright I need to order some parts for my suspension, (right upper rear balljoint, left front lower front balljoint and left outter tie rod.) And figured while I'm at it I might as well replace the mounts that cause the thud when you shift hard.

I remeber someone telling me that it's the transmision mounts, but I thought it could be rear differential mounts.

Also someone said that if you get the allroad trans mounts they would bolt on with the 2.8 tranny and really be noticable.

Just looking for part numbers for the transmision mounts from the allroad that would work with my car. 2.8 5spd

I've got the Stern Passenger side and the 034 Solid transmission mounts in my car and they did a LOT for firming up the tranny. No more jerkiness is in the 1st to 2nd gear shift, and that "dreaded thud" has nearly gone away. I"m going to be ordering the Stern rear differential bushings and what not very soon. Apparently those things stop the rear differential from moving so much, which is largely the cause of that thud

so would this work with the 2.8?

looks like it has pretty well everything that I could do to eliminate that bang, or at least make it quite enough so it doesn't sound like the ass of my car is gonna fall out next shift...

Stern rear differential bushings made the biggest difference in my drivetrain. I have s4/2.8 engine mounts, allroad transmission mount, awe dts, lltek strutbar. The stern bushings were by far the best upgrade.

are they in that kit that I posted the link to? It doesn't list exactly what is included and I don't know them by looking at them just yet.

Are the allroad mounts OEM, like I could call my local audi dealer and order allroad transmision mounts and they would bolt up...

just want to iron all this out before I sign away so sorry if I'm asking annoying questions, just be patient with me :)

Search for them on this forum....I remember seeing a thread about them a few weeks ago when they just came out. I'm definitely picking some up.....and yes, that passenger side mount should work. I'd also pick up the Stern Drivers side mount. It'll be worth it

Sounds like you might need a couple items to help you out.

Control Arm Kit (http://www.purems.com/products/product.php/II=1013)
This kit includes all the various control arm ball joints and tie rod ends for the ENTIRE front suspension. It includes all new nuts and bolts and everything you need.

Stern Tranny Mount (http://www.purems.com/products/product.php/II=1984)
This works on 1.8T Manual cars on the driver's side and offers a huge reduction in tranny movements. Gets rid of the rocking of the tranny, and makes for some very secure shifting.

Stern Differential Bushing Kit (http://www.purems.com/products/product.php/II=2011)
Tightens up the differential movement and helps reduce some of the differential clunking.

Stern Diff Power Ring (http://www.purems.com/products/product.php/II=2072)
This reduces differential movement almost completely. It eliminates diff clunking during hard acceleration and launches.

none of the links work Mike, but thanks a lot. I was just wondering how I would go about ordering these parts through our dealership up here in Canada. If you could PM me with the best way to go about this it would be helpful.

This works on 1.8T Manual cars on the driver's side I need it to work on the 2.8
