View Full Version : Brake Noise @ Low Speed?

When I am rolling at a few mph and lightly touch my brakes, almost to a stop, I get this annoying noise like a screech coming from my brakes. This doesn't happen with my friend's a4. I'm talking about when I'm at a stop light or something, that kind of roll.
05 b6 a4 1.8t tip
Any thoughts?
And another point-
This very same friend's a4 (04 a4 1.8t) has much more sensetive brakes and seem to stop much more quickly than mine do. Any thoughts about this? I asked the service manager and he didn't really give me an answer.

Are you both using the same pads? try putting a little anti-squeal on the back of the pads. Should cure it. Here is some more info: squeal fix (http://www.aa1car.com/library/tr996.htm)

I have the same exact issue after I installed some pagid pads. My squeel is coming from the rear brakes... only at very very very low speed.
Really not that big of an issue for me.

Do you do more in-town, slower speed driving or more highway, higher speed driving? If you do more in-town, slower speed driving you can get some glazing that builds up on the pads. It will create kind of a school-bus type squeak right when you’re coming to a stop. What you’ll want to do is get on the freeway and at higher speeds, brake (harder) a few times and the higher heat associated with the higher speeds will usually take the glazing off.
On your friends' stopping quicker than yours, like oldguy asked, are you both using the same pad brand/compound?

The glazing isnt happening in the pads. its im possible glaze pads what happens is the rotors get glazed and if the pads are semi matallic that means there small shavings of meatl in the pad so when your hot you get better bite compared to a organic type pad which will be less noisy but youll expeience more pedal fade. check your pads out if your not hitting the wear indicators and theres no obvios scoring try taking sand paper and going over the pads to get rid of any shavings that may be givving you this squeal than if you cant cut the rotors take a thicker grit sand paper and go over the rotors scratch the surface up on both sides in a circlure motion that should get rid of your squealing. it works for all the time i cant tell you how many times ive done this at work with new brakes works like a charm!!!!!

The glazing can build up on either the rotor or pads, we've seen many times. Or, brake dust can cake up causing squealing as well (you can try to wash this off with a hose but that's not a guaranteed fix).
And we have master and factory trained techs here, finest in the region. [;)]

I have notice this fairly commonly depending on which pads i have in and whether i am just around town or driving more aggresivly. I have started using the air gun and blowing the dust from my pads every week to keep the sqeeling away.
the cheapest and easist fix would be to go drive the car harder and more aggressivly. that should clean the pads and the rotors..[up]

ive noticed when my cars brakes are cold, they dont make a noise. but at when there warmer, at lower speed and coming to a stop is when they make the nasty noise. would that mean my pads are going...

If your pads were worn down enough (~10-15% remaining), the brake pad warning light would come on. If you keep going, the pad may wear down enough to score the rotor. If that was happening, it'd make a screeching noise whether hot or cold.
If you have a squealing noise when hot, you may just have the brake dust/glazing build up. It's a bit difficult to say.
