Hey all,
I want to add an intake to my 30V, but it seems as though all the good ones are in the $250+ range. I don't have that kind of money. What is the cheapest route to take if I want a deep, throaty sound along with a little low-end gain? I've heard about these airbox modding deals or throwing in S4 airboxes...if anyone can elaborate, that'd be great.

Thanks.

K&N makes anice cone intake. I had it set up on mine a month before I totaled my car. It makes a sweet deep noise and they butt dyno feels as though there was slight improvement. Throttle response is a tad quicker as well.

also cutting wholes in the bottom of airbox does the same thing, hence grah4m's swiss cheese mod

Beat me by a few seconds!

Don't know much about cars - can you do both?

I bought a drop in K&N panel filter for my airbox and while i had it out, I drilled 1/2" holes in the airbox itself. It also gave me a deeper tone to my 1.8t. Its really simple, all you really need it the k&n panel filter and a drill. I also stapled some mesh over the holes just for some added security.

And I can buy one of these filters at an Auto Zone/Advanced Auto Parts for a couple of bucks?

Thanks for all the help!

Do you know of a thread dedicated to this mod? I'd like to see pics of the process, else I'll probably screw my entire car up. :(

Is it possible to just drill without adding the K/N filter?

$50 K&N oiled drop in filter for the lose. I had one for a few days and didn't notice any difference, except for a dirty MAF.

Replaced it with a $12 paper filter (Puronar maybe? something like that) and got $38 and a louder turbo spool.

Probably going to do swiss cheese tomorrow while I'm replacing my DV.

If you do, could you take some pics and send them to me/post them here?

That'd be awesome.

Sure. I'm probably not gonna cut that many, I just want a little more turbo whistle and I'll be happy.

If you want more pictures here are a few threads about swiss cheese. Keep in mind some are for different cars, so they might not look exactly the same:
